They
grew into Monongah High’s 1973 state title team
Monongah’s
Pop Warner team had at least three members who in 1973 would win the state
football championship for Monongah High:
Jay Feltz, the Lions’ quarterback,
Class of 1975; Jerry Koloskie, Class of 1975; and Mike DeMary, Class of 1974.
That was the last time that the Lions would win the title before consolidating into North Marion after the 1978 football season. Other state champs came in 1952,
1955, 1968 and 1969.
Jay Feltz is the son of the late Jim Feltz, who coached Monongah High to the 1952 and 1955 state titles, and Betty Wilson Feltz, who today lives with her son, Jon Pat Feltz, long-time Monongah Middle School math teacher.
Jerry
Kolskie is the former associate head athletic director at the University of
Nevada-Las Vegas.
Mike
DeMary lives in Monongah.
Steve
Fazio, Class of 1975, is married to Cora Fazio, who operates Fazio Eldercare in
Monongah on Stoney Lonesome. Steve’s father, Renzy Fazio, ran Fazio’s Grocery
on Jackson Street with his wife, Frances Olesky Fazio, and Steve kept Renzy’s famous sausage
recipe and sells the product to this day, as Steve and Cora’s son, Matthew
Fazio, posted on his Facebook page.
Joe Fazio, Class of 1974, is married to Paula Kerns Fazio, Class of
1979. His uncle, John Fazio, played with the Durham Bulls at the same time as
Eddie Lusczynski did.
Jay Pellillo, Class of 1975, who
lives in White Hall with wife Tabitha, was a son of Albert Pellillo and Joyce
Carlot Pellillo and a grandson of Julie and Gene Carlot, who operated Carlot’s
Grill.
