There will be no funeral services for Patsy Colisino, Jr., who passed away Friday, September 24.

Patsy’s obituary from Hutson Funeral Homes:

Patsy Colisino, Jr., 64, of Farmington, passed away on Friday, September 24,2021 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He was born April 9,1957 in Fairmont, a son of the late Patsy Colisino, Sr. and Margaret L. Markley Colisino.

Patsy graduated from Fairmont State in the nursing program. He was employed at various nursing homes and hospitals in the area as a nurse. He enjoyed painting, ceramics, knitting, and sewing, watching WVU sports, and Nick Saban's teams.

Survivors include his brother, Harry James Colisino, Sr.; a nephew: Harry Colisino, Jr.; a niece: Jennifer Colisino Camp; several extended family members; ex-wife: Donna Colisino, Barrackville; and her children: Jimmy and Christy.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Robert Louis Colisino, who died in infancy and a sister-in-law: Beverly Colisino.

There will be no public visitation or services due to COVID. Patsy's request was to be cremated.

After reading the original version of this article I posted Jennifer Camp provided valuable additional information, corrections and amplifications. Thanks, Jennifer. Despite being a newspaper editor for 43 years and investigating for hours  before I publish an article, mistakes are inevitable.

I was very close to my Uncle Pat and my dear Mother Beverly Morgan Colisino was my best friend.

My mom only had 1 sister who is now remarried and has moved out of state. Mandi is my cousin, but she lives in Farmington (which is where my Uncle last resided. Not Barrackville). Same with my Cousin Tim & his wife.

Patsy Jr's parents are the late Patsy Colisino Sr who passed in 2015 and Margaret Markley Colisino who passed in '89. They resided in Carolina.

My Dad (Patsy's Brother) & my mom Beverly who passed in 2019 both graduated Monongah in '74. I am the oldest of their children. Jennifer Colisino Camp ('93 graduate of North Marion) live with my husband Keith and our 4 kids in Arkansas. My brother , Harry James Colisino Jr ('97 graduate of North Marion) lives with his wife Megan and their 2 kids in Carolina. Patsy Jr was married to Donna McDonald Colisino of Barrackville (had 2 step kids Jimmy & Christy McDonald), but they divorced.

Patsy was an RN for more than 30 years at multiple facilities. He graduated Monongah high in '75 and graduated Fairmont State with his nursing degree.

The official obituary will be published in Times West Virginia next week as we are still letting friends and family know of his passing.

Patsy Colisino, Jr., Class of 1975, passed away in Barrackville.

His brother, Harry Colisino, is Class of 1974. Sheila Mobley McCutcheon, also Class of 1974, passed on the news to me.

Their parents were Patsy Colisino, Sr., who passed away in 2015, in Carolina, and Margaret L. Markley Colisino. Patsy, Sr. later married Erma M. Nuzum Colisino in 1992. Patsy, Sr.’s parents were James and Mary DeSalvo Colisino.

Jim McDonald and Christy McDonald are Patsy’s stepchildren. 

James Colisino, a North Marion graduate from Carolina, is Patsy, Jr.’s nephew.

The late Bev Morgan Colisino, Class of 1974, was married to Harry James Colisino.

 

Bev’s sister is Donna Morgan Snyder, widow of Tim Snyder. 

 

Bev's daughter, Jennifer Camp, is married to Keith Camp and they live in Carolina. She’s a North Marion grad who studied medical assisting at West Virginia Junior College in Morgantown.

 

Dana Smith Dake, living in Conway, Arkansas with husband Michael Dake, is Bev’s sister.

 

Mandi Neal of Maumee, Ohio and Fairmont East and Fairmont State grad Timothy Colisino, married to Sharon Johnson Colisino and living in Frostburg, Maryland, are Jennifer’s cousins.

East Fairmont grad Michael Moore remembers working with Patsy, Sr. in radiology at WVU’s Ruby Memorial Hospital. “He was a good guy!,” Michael reports.

Chalk up another good deed by one of Susan’s Angels

 

Chelsea McCann, who moved to Monongah with husband Benjamin McCann in 2018, is secretary of the Monongah Christmas Lights Committee that put dozens of street lights in the town for holiday cheer and are fundraising to add more lights Saturday, November 13 in the Monongah Town Hall from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

Chelsea and Ben live in the Bridge Street home they own next door to Ann DeMary Eates, Class of 1945, widow of Joe Eates, also Class of 1945, and the godparents of my son, John Larry Olesky. Chelsae and Ben met via an online dating service when Chelsea was living in Cumberland, Maryland and Ben was residing in Fairmont. They were married in August 2016 and Ben lured Chelsea to Almost Heaven.

Chelsea and Ben have a son, Quinn.

Chelsea grew up in Matthews, Virginia, “a very small coastal town” as she describes it accurately since it has a population of 569 even though the 3-centuries-old town is the county seat of Matthews County, Virginia and its residents frolic on Bethel Beach. She graduated from Matthews High School and got a medical health associates degree from privately owned West Virginia Junior College, which has campuses in Morgantown and Charleston and was founded in 1892.

She has worked in animal shelter medicine and management, nursing home Certified Nursing Attendant, retail management, grant writing and overall management. Monongah Mayor Johnboy Palmer and Town Councilwoman Susan Staron Sanders, Class of 1971, the Angel of Thomas Street and a Four States coal miner’s daughter who calls her Lights Committee members her Angels, are effusive with their praise of her work in Monongah.

BETTY JEAN BARTON MADDIX PASSES AWAY

 

Long-time St. Barbara’s worker Betty Jean Barton Maddix passes away

Betty Jean Barton Maddix, a laundry worker at St. Barbara’s Nursing Home for 20 years who lived in Monongah for 51 years, passed away Friday, September 17 at the age of 93.

She was a 1947 Philippi High graduate who married coal miner Steve Maddix of Brownton.

Betty lived in Monongah for a half-century with her son, Stephen John Maddix. A daughter, Anna Jean Maddix Rogucki, lives in Glenville with husband Frank Fogucki.

Betty Jean Maddix, 93, of Monongah, was born in eternal life September 17, 2021, peacefully at her home. She was born on September 15, 1928, the eldest daughter of the late Leroy and Mabel Barton.

Betty retired from St. Barbara’s Nursing Home with 20 years of service as a laundry worker. She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and was a member of the ladies’ society. She enjoyed making the Easter Eggs before becoming ill.

Betty was a graduate of Philippi High School, Class of 1947, and married Steve Maddix of Brownton, where they made their first home. Being married to a coal miner meant following the job. Moving from Brownton, they lived a short time in Moundsville, then Glenville, and finally Monongah, where she lived for the last 51 years with her son.

She is survived by her beloved and devoted son, Stephen John, who resided with her. She is also survived by a daughter, Anna Jean and her son-in-law, Frank Rogucki of Glenville; and two grandchildren, Kristi Ann and husband Ken McWhirter of Glenville, Eric Stephan of Glenville; and one great granddaughter, Keely Ann McWhirter of Glenville; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Surviving siblings are Delores Castleberry of Harrisburg, NC, Richard Barton and wife Millie of Philippi, Margaret Swisher and husband Bill of Elkins, Eugene Cool of Morgantown, and Larry Cool of Ohio.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Steve; brothers, Leroy, Frank, and Charles; sisters, Marcella, Willa Mae, and Connie; and a special nephew, Hampton Emerson Castleberry II.

The family extends their deepest appreciation and gratitude to Betty’s wonderful neighbors, Bob and Nancy Bouvy for all their help, concern, prayers, and caring. May God bless you both. Also, our gratitude extends to UHC Home Health Care, especially Samantha Rhodes, and to UHC Hospice.

GOLDIE BASAGIC HUFFMAN & JOHN HUFFMAN CELEBRATE 46TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

 

Goldie Basagic Huffman, Class of 1974, and retired coal miner John Huffman (after 38 years in the mines) celebrated their 46^th wedding anniversary. Goldie once worked for the federal government.

Their daughter Brooke Huffman Pethtel is married to Adam Pethtel.

Goldie was a Monongah High cheerleader alongside Patty DeMary Evans, who was at the wedding 46 years ago; Debbie Manzo Vandetta, Class of 1973, Monongahfest president and married to former Monongah Mayor Greg Vandetta, Class of 1975; and Debbie Basagic Bragg, Class of 1972.

IF YOU ATTENDED MONONGAH HIGH BANQUET MAYBE YOU SHOULD BE TESTED FOR COVID?

 

Tested positive for COVID after attending MHS Banquet

I tested positive for COVID infection after attending the September 4 Monongah High Alumni Banquet.

Since I had both Pfizer vaccine shots months before attending the Banquet I have been able to recover slowly and steadily at home without hospitalization. Pfizer vaccines saved my life.

Anyone who attended the September 4 Banquet at the Knights of Columbus in Fairmont breathed in the same air that infected me. It would be prudent to test yourself to see if you are positive or negative.

Particularly if you have NOT gotten your covid vaccine shots or don’t wear a mask.

I have been staying alone in my home for months anyway to avoid contracting covid. Till the Monongah High Alumni Banquet, of course.

My Pfizer vaccine and plenty of bed rest each day has kept my body temperature and my blood pressure readings normal. My main problem has been lack of energy and loss of 7 pounds of body weight.

If anyone else tested positive for covid after attending the Monongah High Banquet then it would be prudent to make that information known. If there are enough of us maybe health officials might want to check out the situation.

 

KIM DeMARY CLOWERS, CLASS OF 1979, PASSES AWAY

 

Kimberly “Kim” Jo DeMary Clowers, Class of 1979, passed away Monday, September 13 in Tennessee.

She was the widow of Earl Lee Clowers, who passed away in 2016 in Red Bank, Tennessee, where they lived.  The obituary said she passed away in a local Soddy Daisy hospital. Soddy Daisy and Red Bank are 12 miles apart.

Her parents were Joseph A. DeMary and Laurelle “Lou” DeMary Hustead.

Survivors include Kim’s siblings Joanne DeMary, Joe “Jo-Jo” DeMary and Julie DeMary and her step-father, Lee Hustead.

Kim became a Registered Nurse after her graduation from Chattanooga State Community College in Tennessee. She is famous for her bunny rabbit cookie jars collection.

Kimberly “Kim” Jo DeMary Clowers, 60 of Soddy Daisy, passed away Monday, September 13th, 2021 in a local hospital.

 

Kim was born in Fairmont, WV and attended Fairmont State University before moving to Chattanooga. She earned her associates degree in Nursing from Chattanooga State Community College and worked for many different healthcare companies as a nurse. Most recently she worked for Maxim Healthcare and was an EMT with the city of Red Bank. Kim enjoyed playing the piano, reading poetry, cross stitching, and taking care of her beloved cats. She was known as the family historian and could tell you anything about the family’s roots. Kim was also very patriotic and loved her country dearly. She was a kind and generous woman who donated to help animals and was also an organ donor herself. Kim is leaving behind a selfless legacy and will be remembered for her servant’s heart. 

 

Kim is preceded in death by her husband, Earl Lee “Speedo” Clowers; parents, Joseph A. DeMary and Laurelle “Lou” DeMary Hustead.

 

Survivors include her siblings: Joanne DeMary, Joe “Jo-Jo” DeMary (Beverly Sutton), and Julie DeMary; step-father, Lee Hustead; nieces and nephews: Amanda DeMary (Chris) Songer, Ashley DeMary, Joseph DeMary, and A.J. DeMary; great nieces and nephew: Krisily Songer, Callie Songer, and Colden Layne; and fur baby, Willow.

 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 18th, 2021 at 11am in the South Crest Chapel. Interment will follow in the Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

Bertha Kennedy Wilson memorial September 25

There will be a memorial for Bertha Kennedy Wilson, Class of 1971, at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 25 in the Monongah Town Hall. It will be, fittingly, Bertha’s birthday.

Bertha’s Dulcimer friends will be holding a potluck dinner and jam. Those who show up are encouraged to bring potluck food to share with others and to share their memories of  Bertha.

The spoken memorial will end with a prayer followed by a shared meal and the Dulcimer group’s jam in Bertha’s honor.

RSVPs should be sent to Sandy Kennedy Booth, Bertha’s sister. Their parents were Mary Jane Masters Kennedy and William Jones.

Sandy is a 1986 Fairmont State graduate who lives in Worthington with her husband, Marshall Booth. Both attended Monongah High but graduated from North Marion after MHS merged with other Marion County schools in September 1979.

 

Bertha was part of the Fantastic Four Lions who traveled together to frolic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, Sedona, Arizona, Key West, Cabo San Lucas, New York City and Ohio’s Amish country.

The others were Mary “Kitty” Ahouse Morrison, Class of 1968, who lives on Lyndon Avenue in Monongah; Susan Ahouse Schrader, Class of 1971, who lives in Pittsburgh and Stoney Lonesome;  and Doris Carpenter Rogers, Class of 1971,  who lives in Charleston, West Virginia with husband Scott Rogers.

PATRICIA ANN FLEMING SATTERFIELD, CLASS OF 1962, PASSES AWAY

Patricia Ann “Pat” Satterfield, Class of 1962, passed away Sunday, September 5 from her auto accident injuries. She was 76.

Her parents were Lloyd “Shorty” Fleming and Virginia “Gen Gen” Mullins Fleming.

Pat was one of the top 10 seniors in her graduation class.

Pat was a beautifician and retired after more than 30 years at Alcan Aluminum in Fairmont.

Her children are Todd Satterfield  and Terri Satterfield, both of Colfax, where Pat also resided.

Pat’s sister is Mary Fleming Toothman of Salem, Ohio. Pat’s former husband is Rusty Satterfield of Clarksburg.

Patricia “Pat” Ann Satterfield, 76, of Colfax, went to be with her Lord and Savior, on Sunday, September 5, 2021, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born October 14, 1944 in Jenkins, K.Y., a daughter of the late Lloyd “Shorty” and Virginia “Gen Gen” Mullins Fleming. Pat was a 1962 graduate of Monongah High School and a 1964 graduate of Morgantown Beauty Academy. She was a Christian by faith. Pat began her career as a hairdresser in Colfax and later worked with Alcan Aluminum in Fairmont where she retired with over 30 years of service in the rolling department. She had been an avid league bowler, and enjoyed camping with her family in West Virginia. She loved to travel, especially to the beach and to visit with her daughter. Pat was blessed to have a close group of lifelong friends that she considered family. She loved the lunches, painting classes, trips, and getaways she was able to have with them. Pat is survived by her son, Todd and his wife Patti Usary Satterfield of Colfax, and her daughter, Terri Satterfield and her boyfriend Marlon Jones of Stanford, FL. As well as her grandsons, who were her pride and joy, Austin Satterfield and his girlfriend Jess Stuart, and Jansen Satterfield, all of Colfax. She is also survived by her sister, Mary and her husband Dan Toothman of Salem, OH, her nieces and nephews, Brian Toothman, Valerie Toothman, Chad Satterfield, and Kelsey Kyer, her former husband, Rusty Satterfield of Clarksburg, and her beloved grand-doggies, Roxi, Fynn and Maze. Memorial donations may be made to the Marion County Humane Society, PO Box 905, Fairmont, WV 26555. The family has entrusted the arrangements to Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont, WV. CARL VANDETTA PASSES AWAY AT THE AGE OF 91

 

Carl Vandetta, Class of 1948, passed away Monday, September 5.

Carl served his country in the Navy in Korea, retired from Davis Electric as a truck driver and was in the legendary Monongah High School band. He played the accordion before MHS to warm up for the band.

Carl married Martha Robinson Vandetta, Class of 1952, from Worthington, who survives. Martha spent her childhood 3 houses from Jim McDaniel, Class of 1960. Her mother, Artie Sigman, passed away at age 102.

Carl’s parents were Felix Vandetta and Agnes Bokis Vandetta. 

Carl’s siblings were Jim Vandetta, Betty Vandetta Dempsey and Shirley Vandetta DeMoss, who married famous Monongah High pitcher Frank DeMoss who led  the Lions to their only state baseball title in 1955.

I went to Monongah High with Carl and passed his family home many times on my way to my Uncle Frank Loss and Aunt Gezala Futten Loss’ home in Mill Fall. After leaving Pike Extension and the Vandetta home I crossed 2 bridges to get to the 100-acre Loss farm.

Gezala was the sister of my mother, Lena Futten Olesky, and Si Futten, who was a barber on Fairmont Avenue for decades.

Carl’s funeral will be at noon Thursday, September 9. Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. till the services begin in Monongah’s Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Carl Eugene Vandetta

August 18, 1930 - September 06, 2021

 

Carl Eugene Vandetta, 91, of Monongah, passed away Monday, September 6, 2021. He was born August 18, 1930 in Monongah, a son of the late Felix Vandetta and Agnes Bokis Vandetta.

Carl was a graduate of Monongah High School in 1948 and a member of the high school band. He retired as a truck driver for Davis Electric. He was a veteran of the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict, stationed at Point Cruz CVE119. He was a lifetime member of the VFW. Carl was an usher at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. He played the accordion in his younger days.

Carl is survived by his wife of 61 years, Martha Vandetta; a sister-in-law, Betty Vandetta of Monongah; a niece, Valerie Aldridge and her husband Jim of Monongah; nephews, Greg Vandetta and his wife Debbie of Monongah, and David DeMoss and his wife Stacia; a good friend, Carla Shultz; and several great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his siblings, James Vandetta, Betty Dempsey, and Shirley DeMoss.

The family would like to thank caregivers Brenda, Gina, and Loretta who lovingly cared for Carl, the Right at Home Agency, UHC Infusion Center, and Dr. Peter Ang.

The family will receive friends at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Monongah on Thursday, September 9, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The Catholic Funeral Liturgy will be at the church on Thursday at 12:00 p.m. with Father Vincent E.
