Jim Pulice, Greg Patrick, John Hall, Donna Trickett, Ron Yanero
VOCan’t break up this ol’ gang of mine UO

The Beatles broke up, but the Jenna Won’t Sing Band, #1 in Monongah, doesn’t let Ron Yanero’s recovering from a stroke at Pierpoint medical facility keep them apart, even if Yoko Ono shows up.

John Hall joined Greg Patrick and Jim Pulice with Ron.

Ron’s Jenna bandmates have Lions blood: Greg, Class of 1970, social studies teacher at Fairmont Catholic School, after 37 years at Miller Junior High and West Fairmont Middle School; and Jim, Class of 1969, retired Monongah Middle School principal and son of Jim Pulice, Class of 1948. Jim’s son, Eric Pulice, also is part of the Jenna band.

Pamm Yanero Bragg, Class of 1969, describes Ron as her cousin.

Pam’s father was Fred Yanero, who had the two-story house on Pike Street Extension on my way to the Mill Fall home of my uncle, Frank Loss, and my aunt, Gezala Futten Loss, to pick up milk.

Arnold Loss and wife Suzanne Barr Loss, Class of 1948, bought the farm from Frank and Gezala. All four are deceased.

Pam is first cousin to Frank Yanero, Class of 1964; Rick Yanero, Class of 1971; Chris Yanero, Class of 1971; and Kim Yanero, Class of 1974.

Through her dad, Pam is second cousin to Jerry Koloskie, Class of 1975, University of Albany (in New York) deputy athletic director.

Fred was the uncle of Jerry’s mother, Julia Monell Koloskie, Class of 1944, John Koloskie, Jr.’s late wife.

Don and Ron Evans are Pam’s second cousins.
Monongah’s Becky Edgell Long passes away

Monongah’s Becky Edgell Long passed away Saturday, February 27.

Her parents were William and Alberta Harold Edgell, but I don’t see a link to Okla “Okey” Edgell, Class of 1944, whose parents were Ray and Lucy Cain Edgell.

Becky’s sister is Georgie Edgell Spurling of Indiana.

The siblings of Okey, who played football at Monongah High, were Lillieray May “Pickle” Edgell Hall, Jeanette J. Edgell Lane, Doak Edgell and James Edgell.

Becky’s obituary:

Rebecca Becky Long

She was a loving homemaker. She had a special love for children and was always looking after children. She had recently adopted Aleah Cottinham, Alayah Hall and Neveah Hall.

She is survived by three daughters Rebecca Burton of Fairmont, Leah Edgell of Fairmont, and Georgenna Long of Fairmont; one stepson Tommy Long of Pennsylvania; on stepdaughter Nancy; one sister Georgie Spurling of Indiana; 9 grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Lions March into their birthdays

March certainly has an impressive pride of Lions on the birthdays list.

Donna Davis
Such as:

Donna Colvert Davis, Class of 1961, married to 1958 MHS grad Bill Davis, who keeps the Monongah High Alumni Reunion humming by handling the dinner-dance reservations.

Doris Carpenter Rogers, Class of 1971, who lives in Charleston with husband Scott Rogers.

Phil Colanero, Jr., Class of 1963, who lives in Morgantown with Betty Hanlin and is the son of a member of the unbeaten 1940 Monongah High football team.
Doris Rogers

Richie Basagic, Class of 1975, whose father, Richard Basagic, Class of 1948, rode on Phil Mangino’s truck with me as it transported the Monongah High football team. Richard played; I was the team manager.

Benn Morgan, Class of 1948, who is a genius at the organ of the Old Durham Church in Maryland. He would love to play the St. Stephen's Cathedral organ in Passau, Germany, the world's largest pipe organ in the world. Paula and I were there and the music comes at you from the left, the right, behind, in front and above through the ceiling. It was an awesomee psunami of organ music.

There’s another March Lion birthday girl that I see often: Sandy Weils Shaffer Cook, Class of 1959, at Monongah High Alumni reunions in Sarasota and Punta Gorda, Florida and in Mountaineer Field in Section 107.

Doris’ parents were Bill Carpenter and Iris Delores Martin Carpenter, Class of 1950, my graduation year.

Sandy Cook
Doris’ siblings are Will Carpenter, Class of 1975 and a Marion County teacher since 1975 who lives in Fairmont; and Amy Carpenter.

Monongah High has had many Carpenters walking its hallways:

Genevieve Elutrio Carpenter, Class of 1945.

Hellen Snider Carpenter, Class of 1950, who lives in Cottageville, West Virginia.

Debra Urish Carpenter, Class of 1969.

Jim Carpenter, Class of 1970.

Mary Carpenter Evans, Class of 1970.

A Lion’s roar to the MHS birthday boys and girls.

If your name isn’t on the MHS alumni birthdays list, email John Olesky at jo4wvu@neo.rr.com with the birthday date, your graduation year and your current hometown and I’ll add you to the list.
