WVU pharmacy prof gets national award

Gretchen K. Garofoli, clinical assistant professor in the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy Department of Clinical Pharmacy, has been selected as the American Pharmacists Association’s 2015 Distinguished New Practitioner award.

The American Pharmacists Association represents more than 62,000 practicing pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, student pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

The Distinguished New Practitioner award recognizes a pharmacist within the first five years of professional practice who has contributed to the development of student pharmacists, has been active in service to the community, has participated in professional activities and has made an impact on the profession of pharmacy through professional achievements.

Her practice site is at Waterfront Family Pharmacy in Morgantown, where she focuses on diabetes care, immunizations and medication therapy management.

RadioShack selling out customers

RadioShack is trying to sell you out, all 117 million customers.

The names, phone numbers, mailing addresses, e-mail addresses and some purchase history are on the auction block as part of RadioShack’s bankruptcy reorganization.

Attorneys general from several states have filed suit to prevent that, saying it violates the promises RadioShack made to its customers before its bankruptcy.

The privacy policy displayed in stores and on its web site said, "At RadioShack, we respect your privacy. We do not sell our mailing list."

Apparently, unless RadioShack can make money while bailing out.

Bill Meredith & John Woods: Another life-long MHS friendship

At my request, Bill Meredith, Class of 1957, provides his memories of John Woods, Class of 1957:

“John,

“I have known John Woods nearly all of my life.  We went from the first grade at East Monongah Grade School through our graduation from Monongah High School as classmates and good friends.  Our families both attended Monongah Baptist Church.

“He had wonderful Christian parents and I was often at their home throughout my years of living in Monongah.  John's father, Bill, was my Sunday School teacher for many years and was a father figure to me, since my own father passed away when I was six years old.  He had a positive influence on me and all of the young men he taught.

“Although we don't get to see each other often, John and I have stayed in touch over the years.  I have always thought that the best friends one has in life are those who were your classmates in elementary and high school.  That was especially true in our little corner of West Virginia.  There was something unique about growing up there.  Having friends like John Woods allows me to often get a glimpse of that magical time of my life.

John Woods lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. Bill lives in Sarasota, Florida and Buckeye Lake, Ohio.

Bill and John were on the 1955 Monongah High state championship football team. Life-long MHS friendships, as Bill indicated, are nourished by “something unique in growing up” in Monongah and/or going to Monongah High.

Virginia DeMary Rossi and Christine “Tina” Tartell Arnett, both Class of 1953, were born on the same day – April 24, 1935 -- and died two hours apart on the same day – August 20, 1982 -- and were best friends for life.

June Paxton Rogers, Class of 1948, adds her lifetime friendship memories:

“Frances Savereno Pulice and I met in first grade in Carolina, became good friends which continued through grade school, high school and beyond.  We kept in touch all through the

years, even attending MHS alumni dinners together until she passed away about a

year ago.  And ... these years have gone by very fast!”

Frances, also Class of 1948, passed away in 2014. She was the widow of Johnny Pulice, Sr., 1944 Farmington High grad.

Frances’ brothers Tony Savereno, Class of 1941, and Orlando Savereno, also are deceased. 

Charleston’s Doris Carpenter Rogers, Class of 1971, daughter of Iris Martin Carpenter, Class of 1950, and Sue Ahouse Schrader, Class of 1971, who lives in Stoney Lonesome and Piscataway, New Jersey, have been friends since second grade.

Nancy Robinson Saunders of Hutchinson and Mary Bienkoski Domico of Monongah, both Class of 1950, were together continuously till death intervened – Nancy first, then Scoogum’s widow.

Pat Meredith Wills, Class of 1950, who lives in Fairmont and St. Augustine Beach, Florida, and Leona “Duckles” Davis Schooley, Class of 1953, seemed joined at the hips at MHS and beyond.

Patti DeMary Evans, Class of 1972, and Debbie Manzo Vandetta, Class of 1973 and married to Monongah Mayor Greg Vandetta, have been friends for most of their three score-plus years on this earth. Bob Kasper, who lives in South Lyon and Presque Isle, Michigan, and John Olesky, who lives in Tallmadge, Ohio, have been friends since first grade at Sts. Peter and Paul School and visit each other in Michigan and Ohio every year. Bob -- aka “Satch” in our younger days – and John were classmates for 13 years, including John’s first year at Fairmont State.

WVU’s NCAA run worth $4.8 million to Big 12

WVU’s NCAA run to the Sweet Sixteen was worth $4.8 million to the Big 12, which divides the money equally among its 10 schools.

The payments are split into sixths and rolled out for six years.

The NCAA will dish out $199 million to the conferences for this season's March Madness. Every game that a conference’s team plays brings in about $1.6 million.

The Big 12, ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC have 20% of the teams in Division I, but get 60% of the March Madness payout -- $1.6 billion over 24 years.

Since every team in the conference gets the same amount of payout, Northwestern has received $24.5 million – the same as Ohio State and Michigan State – even though the Wildcats haven’t been in the NCAA tournament since 1939.

Kansas has earned $66 million for the Big 12, but got $24 million as its equally divided payout.

It also helps if a conference has teams that play a lot of March Madness games, but only have to split it 10 ways, as in the Big 12, compared to a 14-way split in the SEC. Even with a lower conference total, the per-school pots can be larger.

CATCHING UP WITH

             Class of 1957

John Woods, Class of 1957, lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. His wife, Ardyss, who was from Maine, passed away last November.

He’s an IBM retiree who communicates with Bonnie Nicholson Moats, Class of 1960, who lives in Rustburg, Virginia.

John is a math graduate of Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, which also is the home of East Carolina University, a frequent WVU football opponent.

John's next birthday will be May 29, his 76^th birthday. He's the youngest child of Helen Boydoh Woods.

John's siblings are Harriet Jane Woods, Class of 1949; Bill Woods, Class of 1952, a General Electric engineer married to Dorothy Browning Woods, Class of 1955, a Registered Nurse (they live in Indiana); and Shirley Woods DeMarco Merchant, a schoolteacher in Akron, Ohio.

Sally Woods, to add to the confusion, is the widow of Marko Tarley, once mayor of Monongah. Sally has a masters in education from WVU and retired after a 1974-2002 career as a Fairmont State professor.

Through his mother, John and his siblings are cousins of Robert Boydoh, Class of 1956, and Glenda Boydoh, Class of 1959, and Paul Reger Boydoh, Class of 1956, and Sherry Boydoh.

Paul R. & Sherry's father is Paul Boydoh.

Marko’s nephew is Mark Tarley, 1985 North Marion grad, married for almost three decades to Siobhan. 

Mark and Siobhan live in Hickory, North Carolina. 

Marko is a son of Tony Tarley. 

John's son, with the help of John’s daughter-in-law, gave John three grandchildren – twin boys and an older sister.

Danny and David Woods attended the 2014 Monongah High Alumni reunion. 

When I  phoned Ramona Fullen Michalski, Class of 1949, for details about the Woods family, it brought back memories to her of the families on McCue Street in Monongah during Ramona's childhood:

Tom Dean, the Woods family, the Boydoh family, Tommy Rogers, the Tartell family and the Godby family all lived on McCue Street at that time -- and, of course, the Fullen family. Later, Lawrence and Regina Boone Godby moved to their Camden Avenue (Rt. 19) home next to where brothers Angelo and Alex Catania covered up our "baseball field" to construct a Sinclair service station. The Catanias later moved to Covina, California.

The 2015 MHS Reunion will be Saturday, May 23, so keep your calendar clear so you can attend the dinner-dance and, if your class has a separate reunion Friday, May 22, the prequel dinner.

Hot Rod Hundley, 80, who went from prowling the streets of his native Charleston to clown prince of WVU basketball, passed away Friday, March 27 in Phoenix, where he lived.

He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease several years ago.

Rodney Clark Hundley was the NBA’s Utah Jazz radio announcer for 31 years.

Hot Rod played for WVU in 1955-1957. The Mountaineers were ranked No. 4 in 1956.

He was the fourth player in NCAA history to score more than 2,000 points during his career—and he did it in three years, because freshmen could not play varsity basketball.

Hot Rod’s 33 and Jerry West’s 44 are the only numbers retired by WVU.

He was the only WVU player chosen first overall in an NBA draft, and played for the Lakers in Minneapolis and Los Angeles (1957-63).

He called games for the Phoenix Suns, then Lakers and finally the Jazz, who moved from New Orleans to Salt Lake City, which are about different from each other as cities can get.

Just like Hot Rod and West were different, but WVU’s two best basketball players ever.

West Virginia’s loss is Florida’s gain

70% of those who live in West Virginia were born in this state.

In 1900 and 1950, 81% were West Virginia natives, so more are moving out of than into the state. No surprise to anyone paying attention. The young go where the better-paying jobs are.

In Ohio the progression from 1900 to 1950 to 2010 was from 71% to 70% to 75%, which indicates more moving in than moving out.

Pennsylvania’s percentages are 77%, 80% and 74%, adding more residents until 1950, then losing ground.

Florida’s numbers: 65%, 43% and 33%, with the influx percentage doubling from 1900. Probably because the Sunshine State absorbed those who left the northern states.

The 150 or so who attend the monthly meeting of the West Virginia Club give testament to the migration.

Her birthday is April 12.

Linda’s sister is Patricia Sawyer Skeen, Class of 1965, of New Martinsville. Linda once was a pharmacist for Giant Eagle in New Martinsville, West Virginia, where sister Patricia lived and was in the Tyler County school system. Linda’s husband, Steven Duckworth, Class of 1966, was in the Wetzel County school system.

Another April birthday belongs to Paula “P.J.” Harbert Hickman, North Marion Class of 1983, who started at Monongah High before the consolidation into North Marion.

Her birthday is April 9.
