Want to check out  Monongah High yearbooks from 1939 through 1960? Here’s how

I have converted 23 Monongah High Black Diamond yearbooks' printed versions into online albums that anyone in the world can see via the Internet, from 1939 through 1960 and 1964. And promises of yearbooks through 1979 (the final graduation class) when I’m ready for them. I’m converting them one at a time because it takes up to 4 weeks to convert one yearbook from the printed version to the online album.

Cheaper for Monongah for town not to handle garbage itself

In this day of costly government requirements and restrictions, it’s cheaper for Monongah to farm out the garbage pickup business than for the town to handle it.

Mayor Greg Vandetta explains:

“We have looked at prices again about going back into the garbage business. We have determined at this time that we are currently doing the right thing.

“One thing that you must remember is that money generated in garbage has to stay in garbage. It cannot be used to blacktop roads, etc. That is probably the reason most towns sub it out.

“If we would choose to get back in the garbage business, at some future time, it would be to hold the cost down for the citizens.”

And, fortunately for Monongah residents, Republic Waste Management’s proposed 44% rate increase to the Public Service Commission wouldn’t affect them because Monongah uses a different company with a similar name, Waste Management Services.

Affected Marion Countians with Republic could see an increase of either $76 or $87 per year.  They pay almost $200 a year now.

Monongah residents pay $224 a year so they'll pay  less than other Marion Countians if Republic gets the increase it is seeking.

The March of the Lions birthdays commences

Phil Colanero, Jr., Class of 1963, who lives in Morgantown with Betty Hanlin, and Doris Carpenter Rogers, Class of 1971, Class of 1971, who lives in Charleston with husband Scott Rogers, start of the March of Lions birthdays.

Phil Colanero, Betty Hanlin

Phil’s father was on the unbeaten 1940 Monongah High football team.

Doris’ parents were Bill Carpenter and Iris Delores Martin Carpenter, Class of 1950.

Doris’ siblings are Will Carpenter, Class of 1975 and a Marion County teacher since 1975 who lives in Fairmont; and Amy Carpenter.

Monongah High has had many Carpenters walking its hallways:

Genevieve Elutrio Carpenter, Class of 1945.
Hellen Snider Carpenter, Class of 1950, who lives in Cottageville, West Virginia.
Debra Urish Carpenter, Class of 1969.
Jim Carpenter, Class of 1970.
Mary Carpenter Evans, Class of 1970.

Doris Carpenter Rogers
There’s another March Lion birthday girl that I see often: Sandy Weils Shaffer Cook, Class of 1959, at Monongah High Alumni reunions in the Sarasota home of Bill Meredith, Class of 1957, and in Mountaineer Field in Section 107.

Happy birthday to the pride of March Monongah High Lions!

If your birthday isn’t listed, email John Olesky at jo4wvu@neo.rr.com and I’ll add it to the list. Give me your full name, including maiden name, your birth date and the year you graduated from Monongah High.
