61st anniversary for Linda & Jiggs

Today is the 61st wedding anniversary for Linda Tomlinson Stevenski, Class of 1955, and Andy “Jiggs” Stevenski, 1950 Grafton High grad. They live in Monongah.

Unfortunately, Andy is at River Oaks in Clarksburg for therapy and kidney dialysis. But Linda writes that “He will be coming home from the hospital in a few days. He still needs much prayer!”

Their meeting at the 12th Street Skating Rink led to six children and several grandchildren.

Linda’s siblings are Martha Sutcliffe of Mineral Ridge, Ohio, Patty Clark of Ohio, James Hammond of Fairmont and the late Bill Hammond.

Former majorette Linda published a ton of children’s books.

Eva & Dewayne Jarvis

Eva Marie Huey Cox Jarvis, Class of 1975, and her husband, Dewayne, are celebrating their 27th wedding anniversary.

Eva's post to Dewayne: "I love you to the moon and back. Even more."

They live in Grant Town.

Eva grew up in Everson.

Remembering MHS Hayhurst daughters’ Mom

It was a year ago Friday that Ann Glaspell Hayhurst, whose three daughters attended Monongah High, passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2015. Since I missed her demise originally because I was on my way to Florida for the winter, this will serve as both a memorial and an obituary. Thanks, Adam Michna, for reminding me of the missed posting at the time of Ann's passing.

Ann Glaspell Hayhurst
Ann lived in Kellytown with her husband of 59 years, Walter “Sonny” Hayhurst, who survives. They were married in 1956 in Taylor, West Virginia.

Daughters Connie Hayhurst Coleman is Class of 1977, Linda Lou Hayhurst Eller is Class of 1979 and Brenda Hayhurst Bray is a 1981 North Marion graduate, which means she also began at Monongah High before the 1979 consolidation with North Marion.

Anna’s obituary:

Anna Belle Glaspell Hayhurst, 76, of Kellytown, passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. She was born November 6, 1939 at Boothsville, a daughter of the late Harvey and Della Glaspell.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Walter “Sonny” Hayhurst.

Anna attended the Main St. United Methodist Church in Farmington. She loved her church and church family, loved looking at wildlife, flowers, her crossword puzzles, cooking for her family, and especially talking on the telephone. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved and cared for her family.

Also surviving are her children: Walter, Jr. “Buck” (Sandra) Hayhurst, Waterford, OH, Connie (Bruce) Coleman, Kellytown, Linda Eller, Idamay, Terry (Sylvia) Hayhurst, Kellytown, and Brenda (Gary) Bray, Fairmont; Grandchildren: Amanda and Rich Kincell, Fairview, John Coleman and Kristen Carpenter, Morgantown, Jeremy and Nicole Coleman, of Rachel, Zackery Bray, Fairmont, Katie and Dan Bailey, Weirton; great grandchildren: Maddie and Brock Kincell, and Sophia Bailey; brothers and sisters: Howard (Willa) Glaspell, Fairmont, Betty (Bill) Saunders, Earl (Donna) Glaspell, all of Corbin Branch.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jessica Marie Eller, and siblings: James, Bud, Silas, Gene and June Glaspell, Ruby Furbee and Mary Ruth Glaspell.

Friends may call at the Hutson Funeral Home in Farmington on Friday from 3-9 p.m. where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Floyd Spatafore, Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the Clermont Cemetery near Boothsville. Condolences may be accessed at www.hutsonfuneralhomes.com .

We start off 2017 with the January birthdays for Lions everywhere.

Appropriately, the first name on the list (for January 6th) is Jeanette Barr Baczuk, Class of 1940, who still is feisty even though she’s been out of Monongah High for almost 76 years! Jeanette lives in Ashland, Ohio. Her late sister is Suzanne Barr Loss.

And there’s Arlene Marteney Decker Edgell, Class of 1951, wife of Okla Edgell, Class of 1944.

And Joe Martin, Class of 1975, enjoying life on Treasure Island, Florida with another Arlene, Arlene Kitchin Martin, a Canadian native.

And Marcia Michalski Westfall, Class of 1974, whose two main claims to fame are tooling around the country on a Harley Electra Glide with husband Dave Westfall and having Ramona Fullen Michalski, Class of 1949, the Monongah High Alumni blog’s “Monongah Bureau Chief,” and the late Frank Michalski, who began with the same class and played football for the Lions, as her parents.

And Joann Davis Thompson, Class of 1962, married to Don Thompson. Joann's sister is Marlene Davis Christopher, also Class of 1962.

And the party girl champion among Monongah High alumni, Mary “Kitty” Ahouse Morrison, Class of 1968, who lives in Monongah but rarely stays there for long with all her traveling.

And last, but certainly not the least, Monongah Mayor Greg Vandetta, Class of 1975, who lives on the street where I first grew up, Thomas Street, with wife Debbie Manzo Vandetta, Class of 1973.

Let out a Lions roar for all of them.

If your name is not on this list, email John Olesky at jo4wvu@neo.rr.com  with your full name, including maiden name, your birthday date, your graduation year and your current hometown.

Mary Frances Miller Myers, Class of 1951, loved her days at Monongah High. And the Monongah High Alumni Reunions that followed over the decades. I had a delightful reunion with Mary Frances and Bill at the 2005 and 2010 Monongah High Alumni Reunions.

Even while she was nearing the end of her life in Canfield, Ohio, she instructed her daughter, Karen Myers Naffah, to pass along information about her health to me so that I could put it on this Monongah High Alumni blog, which I did.
After providing a detailed report on the health problems of Mary Frances and husband Bill Myers, Karen wrote: “She asked me to share our saga with you and ask for prayers for her and my father.”

Now that Mary Frances has passed away, I am carrying out her final wish: To share her memorabilia of Monongah High with Lions no matter where they live in the world.

Karen mailed me Mary Francis’ considerable memorabilia, which included the 1949, 1950 and 1951 Black Diamond yearbooks, programs and scripts for the senior and junior high plays that had Mary Frances in the cast and autographs and graduation cards from her fellow Class of 1951 classmates.

The montage above is just a sample of Mary Francis’ memorabilia. To see the full package, click on https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNf5po_Fxk_LE_cxQ26XWPevnobSCFi-KQGIM0gMk2tgJn1vQN5fn7wCXrtth6a9g?key=Z0ppeEZLdmtsdjZHYWJvYlpRRGhCeGduUFl4Ny13 Some photos have captions under them. Click on the balloon in the bottom far right corner and you’ll see the caption. Unfortunately, Google changed the way captions are added. It’s more cumbersome for you. But blame Google, not me. Picasa kept it simpler.
Shinnston native Mary Frances met Bill in Akron, Ohio, where she was a secretary at General Tire and Rubber. They married in 1953, long before I began at the Akron Beacon Journal in 1969 after working in the sports departments of the Dayton, Ohio Daily News and St. Petersburg, Florida Times. Mary Frances and Bill moved to Canfield in 1972, and lived there till her demise.

The children of Mary Frances and Bill Myers are Youngstown State graduate Karen, who lives a block away from Mary Frances’ final home; Bill Myers, whose careers included the Dayton, Ohio police department and the FBI; and David Myers, who lives in Sarasota and watches homes for snowbirds while they are up north in warmer weather.

Mary Francis’ brother is Cleve Miller of Leesburg, Florida, which is about 12 miles from The Villages where Paula and I spend our winters in Paula’s home. She was “Nana” to four grandchildren, Amanda and Matthew Myers of Dayton, Mallory Naffah Padurean of Canfield and Morgan Myers of Sarasota.

Mary Francis was predeceased by her parents; grandparents; and her sister, Martha Frye.

If you want to share your memories of Mary Frances, email me at jo4wvu@neo.rr.com and CC the email to Karen at kmnaffah@aol.com

In case you missed it, here is Mary Frances’ obituary as it appeared after her passing in March 2016:

Obituary for Mary Frances Myers

CANFIELD – A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, officiated by Pastor Don Christensen for Mrs. Mary Frances Myers, 82, who died Saturday morning with her loving family by her side after a brief illness.

She was born Oct. 9, 1933, in Shinnston, W.Va., a daughter of Robert and Ella Mae (Everson) Miller. After the death of her mother at a young age, Mary and her siblings were raised by their grandparents, Cleve and Minnie Everson.

She was a 1951 graduate of Monongah High School in West Virginia and was active in the alumni association.

Mary moved to Akron and went to work for General Tire and Rubber Co. as a secretary. She met the love of her life, William M. Myers, whom she married Oct. 31, 1953. They moved to Canfield in 1972 and became active members of the community and the Canfield United Methodist Church.

She was a past member of the Sleepy Hollow Garden Club and the Canfield Ladies Bridge Club. Mary enjoyed traveling, spending time with her family, friends and neighbors, but her greatest joys were her husband, children and grandchildren. She loved supporting her children and grandchildren’s activities, and was always their biggest fan.

Mary leaves her husband, William; two sons, William (Debra) Myers Jr. of Dayton and David Myers of Sarasota, Fla.; her daughter, Karen (Michal) Naffah of Canfield; her brother, Cleve (Gloria) Miller of Leesburg, Fla.; and four grandchildren, who were the apples of her eye, Amanda and Matthew Myers of Dayton, Mallory Naffah (Jeffrey) Padurean of Canfield and Morgan Myers of Sarasota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; and her sister, Martha Frye.

The Myers family would like to thank Hospice of the Valley, Ed and Diane Reese and the staff at Briarfield Manor for the kind, loving and compassionate care that was given to Mary during these last few weeks.

Friends may call on Tuesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to the Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, OH 44514.

Reign in Ukraine falls on Greg again

Greg Patrick, Class of 1970, Fairmont Catholic High teacher and leader of Monongah’s Jenna Won’t Sing Band, is visiting friends Kostya and Lara in the Ukraine again. Hopefully, this trip will not involve medical problems as it did last year.

Greg wrote:
Arrived in Kiev!!! Train to Dnipro ! Soon ! Great to see Kostya and Lara at Airport!

Ukraine is bordered by Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.

Greg is a social studies teacher at Fairmont Catholic following his “retirement” after 37 years at Miller Junior High and West Fairmont Middle School.

Greg runs the Monongahfest Car Show every year and is in love with muscle cars.

After a childhood in Monongah, Greg graduated from Fairmont State with a degree in education and got a masters degree at West Virginia University.

In 2000, Greg returned to Monongah to care for his ailing father and has lived in his birthplace town ever since.

Jim Pulice, Eric Pulice and Ron Yanero, still working on his health recovery, are Greg’s bandmates with Jenna Won’t Sing.
Retirement day for Susan Sanders

Susan Staron Sanders, Class of 1971, will retire Friday, December 30 as an administrative assistant at Personnel.
Susan & Ron Sanders
Susan wrote:
“Well as some of you know, this will be my last week at Personnel, after 13 years as an Administrative Assistant, a job I loved. My last day will be Friday December 30th.

“I will now have more time with my wonderful husband to travel and go places and do things we never got to do.

“I also want to explore some new opportunities, I will have more time for Fundraising on the Christmas Lights that I Love so much.

“I will miss a lot of people here but feel so rewarded in finding so many people good jobs; that’s the best part.
“The next big thing will be Tommy’s graduation from WVU. We are so proud of that young man. More on that later.
“Love you all, my family and friends.”

Susan, the angel of Thomas Street, is even better known for spearheading the drive for the 15 Christmas street lights that adorn Monongah.

The Charge of the Lights Brigade will join in celebrating Susan’s retirement.

Mareca Savonarola, among those who helped Susan raise money for the Monongah Christmas street lights, wrote:

“Attention Angels and Elf. Our head Angel Retires Dec. 30th. Time to Party at 3 Ways Inn. All are welcomed.”

3 Ways Inn is my favorite place to party in Fairmont, too, when we have my Class of 1950 reunions.

Susan lives in Monongah with husband Ron Sanders. They are next door to Mayor Greg Vandetta and his wife, Janice Manzo Vandetta.

Susan and Ron’s son, Tommy Sanders, is a WVU computer engineering major.

Ron is a Vietnam veteran. Susan’s brother, Bob Staron, Class of 1967 (deceased), fought in Vietnam.
