The bell in the Monongah’s Miners Memorial at Main and Bridge
streets rings daily at 10:20 a.m., but today is even more meaningful.
It’s the 109th anniversary
of the horrific worst coal mining disaster in American history that killed 362
in adjoining No. 6 and No. 8 Monongah mines.
That was December 6, 1907.
Which is why today also is National
Miners Day.
In 1907, across America, 3,242 miners died including the 362 in
Monongah.
