Nick “Brother” Saban, quarterback of the 1968 Monongah High state football championship team, often helps Monongah High alumni get tickets for Alabama’s home games.

David Fazio, Class of 1968, and wife Cora Fazio, a 1973 Farmington High grad, were in Tuscaloosa for Saturday night’s Iron Bowl Game between No. 1 Alabama and Auburn, which the Crimson Tide won, 55-44.

As a bonus, David got his photo taken with Joe Girari, the manager of the New York Yankees, Dave's favorite team. Brother told Joe that David was the reason that Brother was a Yankees fan.

Other former Lions have told me how Brother helped them get tickets and lodging arrangements to watch the Crimson Tide play.

Despite his multi-millionaire status, Brother hasn’t forgotten his Monongah High and Idamay/Carolina roots.

Joe Martin, Class of 1957, who lives on Treasure Island, Florida and Bertha Pazdric Sullivan, Class of 1954, who lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, remember when the Saban family lived four doors from the Martin family in Carolina at Main and Seventh streets.

Brother’s father, Nick Saban, Sr., sponsored and coached the Idamay Black Diamonds Pop Warner children’s football team for years.

And ran a service station at Helen’s Run and U.S. 19 near Worthington after the family had moved to the house behind the service station.

Brother’s sister, Deene Saban Thompson, a Monongah Middle School teacher who gave Nick the nickname of Brother that stuck; Duane Harbert, Class of 1951, who lives in Marlton, New Jersey; and John Matkovich, Class of 1948, who lives in Palm Harbor, Florida, with his wife, Dolores Sweede Matkovich, Class of 1953, all confirmed the Helen’s Run service station/residence account.

Alabama will play Missouri next week in the Southeastern Conference title game. If the Tide wins that one, and goes to 12-1, then Brother probably will be shooting for his 5th national title, 4 at Alabama and 1 at LSU, in the 4-team national playoffs.

Armed robbery in Worthington

The Marion County Sheriff's Department is searching for two men that held a person at gun point on Wednesday afternoon.
The armed robbery happened just after 3 p.m., according to Deputy Steve Garrett. A person stopped to help two white men while they were standing over the hood of a Suburu pulled over in a church parking lot just past the Handi-Mart on Helen's Run Road in Worthington. The Suburu was an older model, and is light blue or green in color.
The two men were standing in front of the car over the hood, and when the person approached the men to help, one of the men pulled out a gun and demanded money.
They fled from the scene on Route 218 heading towards Farmington with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The first suspect is believed to be in his early 20's, about 5'10”, and weighs about 150 pounds. He was wearing blue jeans, and a gray hoodie.
The second suspect looks to be about 40 years old or a little younger. The suspect has dark hair, a beard without a mustache, and was wearing a dark coat, and a ball cap. According to Deputy Garrett, he's about 220 pounds, and 6'2”. The second suspect was armed with a small handgun.
Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to call Deputy Garrett at the Marion County Sheriff's Department at 304-367-5300.

On Nov. 25, 1962, Katherine Batis, later Katherine, Crown Princess of Yugoslavia, married Jack W. Andrews.

But a day earlier, there was a far more momentous event for Donna Colvert, Class of 1961, and William Davis, Class of 1958: It was THEIR wedding day.

So on Nov. 24, 2015 Donna and Bill, stalwarts of the Monongah High Alumni Association, celebrated their 52nd (!) wedding anniversary.

Quipped Donna: “Time sure does fly.”

Sure, Donna, especially when you’re having fun.

As Monongah High alumni know, Donna keeps the mailman busy every year delivering filled-out Monongah High Alumni Reunion dinner-dance reservation forms, with attached checks, to her 858 Park Avenue home in Monongah.

When you attend the MHS Reunions, Donna is always on the dais, but her work in getting former Lions to gather together is a 12-month job.

MHS Alumni Association president Linda Lopez Gandy, Class of 1965; vice president Delores Edwards, Class of 1955; and Connie Koldres Cameon, Class of 1963, secretary, play vital roles, too.

But Donna has been the constant over all of these decades.

MHS alumni owe her a great debt of gratitude.

Husband Bill is on the MHS Alumni board of directors, along with Linda’s husband James Gandy, Dave Raddish, long-time reunion helper Carol Spatafore (particularly with the MHS golf scramble which, unfortunately, died out as former Lions died off), Nick Scrivo and Sally Woods Tarley.

If you want to congratulate Donna and Bill on their tremendous achievement, you can call her at (304) 534-5636 or email her at dldavis315@comcast.net  or go on her Facebook page.

It would be a piddling repayment compared to everything that Donna -- with Bill at her side -- have done for Monongah High alumni.

Debbie Gilson Thomas, who grew up in Monongah as the daughter of Marcella Pulice Gilson, celebrated her 20th wedding anniversary today (Wednesday, Nov. 26) to husband Tim Thomas.

Quips Debbie: "I'll put in my order now for another 30 years! Love you, knucklehead! Thank you for the beautiful flowers."

Responded Tim: "My wife sure knows the way to my heart. Tickets to see my team play the Chargers on Sunday as an anniversary gift."

They live in California, where Marcella moved with Debbie in 1952. Debbie is a Covina High and Azusa Pacfic University graduate. Covina is where the Catania family moved from Church Street in Monongah -- Mary, Alex, Angelo and Josephine.

Marcella's mother was Mary Kendzior Pulice, who married Sam Pulice about six decades ago. Sam was the oldest brother of Frank Pulice, Jr., Class of 1950.

Please name names

I am beginning to convert the 1961 Monongah High Black Diamond yearbook, loaned to me by David Haines, Class of 1964, who lives in Richmond, Virginia, into an online album.

I scanned these group shots of all the 1961 senior boys and all the 1961 senior girls, but they are not identified.

If David or anyone else can identify them, email John Olesky at jo4wvu@neo.rr.com and I’ll add their names to the photos when I make the 1961 yearbook the 23rd yearbook converted from print to online versions.

I received two emails so far. Can YOU name any of the others?

West Virgina 47th worst state for a woman

If you’re a woman, the only states worse than West Virginia are Arkansas, Oklahoma and Mississippi. That’s according to Cynthia Ramnarace in iVillage.

Kentucky, at 46th, is just ahead of 47th place West Virginia.

West Virginia has the lowest female college graduation rate (17.8%) in the country, which means that West Virginia women bring home smaller paychecks.

17.8% of West Virginia women live in poverty, which matches the college grad rate, and maybe isn't a coincidence. The national average is 14.5%.

However, Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Pearl S. Buck, born in Hillsboro, was the first woman to be awarded both prizes.

Born Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker, Pearl got out of town at the age of five months. Her parents were missionaries in China who came to West Virginia so that Pearl could be born with less risk of disease that was spreading through China at the time.

She didn’t return permanently to her birthplace, and died in Vermont after spending most of her life in China and American universities.

Dead student had Dec. 1 hearing pending
 for pre-WVU under-age alcohol issues
By Kim Freda, WBOY-TV Assignment Editor

A moratorium on all Greek activities continues at West Virginia University following the death of freshman Nolan Burch and the national charter suspension of two fraternities including Beta Theta Pi and Kappa Sigma.

Morgantown Police are still investigating how Burch ended up unresponsive on a fraternity house floor on November 12, suffering from what was described by university officials as a "catastrophic medical emergency."  More than a week after the incident, authorities have not confirmed Burch's official cause of death, which will be determined by a medical examiner.

New details obtained Friday indicated that Burch received citations for possession of alcohol and underage consumption on March 22, 2014, nearly five months before beginning his freshman year at West Virginia University.  Burch was scheduled to appear in Monongalia County court at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 1.  Burch's charges will be vacated, said Morgantown Police Chief Ed Preston.

WVU President Gordon Gee described Burch as being full of energy and enthusiasm in a letter to the university community. "Those who knew him well spoke for his love for life, his positive attitude and his passion for West Virginia University," said Gee.  Burch's organs were donated through Ruby Memorial Hospital to patients in need, which kept three people alive, said Gee.

Gee also called for a culture change at the university, citing alcohol and irresponsible, reckless behaviors that often follow.  The university's fraternity and sorority councils, along with the Office of Student Activities, plan to bring a national facilitator to campus following Thanksgiving break to assist students in what it describes as "thoughtful discussions and development of solutions."

Todd & Michelle Moats
Todd Moats on anniversary cruise

John Todd Moats, 1985 North Marion High grad who lives in Lynchburg, Virginia, and wife Michelle gave themselves a 20th wedding anniversary present. They flew to Florida to meet their cruise ship, which departed Saturday.

They were wed Nov. 19, 1994, two days after Todd’s birthday.

John Todd was born in Monongah, went to Thoburn Grade School, Monongah Middle School and then, because Monongah High had its last graduation class in 1979, had to go to North Marion to finish his education.

Bonnie Nicholson Moats, Class of 1960, who lives in Rustburg, Virginia, posted:

“Logan, Luke and I will miss them, but we have plans!!”

Bonnie is the widow of Fairmont East grad John Moats, the Fairmont State football player that she met while she was an FSC majorette.
Happy birthday, Antheia!

Happy birthday today to Antheia Justice Turner, a 1982 North Marion High grad who began at Monongah High before it ceased to exist in 1979!

Antheia was in Morgantown, as I was, for the TCU game in Mountaineer Field on Nov. 1. She was with Matthew Friend of Morgantown, A.J. and Sarah Ritchea and Fairmont’s Josh Plymale.
Antheai Justice Turner

Antheia lives in Greensboro, North Carolina and is a team leader at Kayser-Roth, which is owned by The Golden Lady Group, which operates more than 500 Goldenpoint specialty stores throughout Europe. Golden Lady designs and produces sleepwear, women’s hosiery and underwear.

If your name is not on this list, email John Olesky at jo4wvu@neo.rr.com  with your full name, including maiden name, your birthday date, your graduation year and your current hometown.
