Dick Chickerell’s widow passes away

Bernice Gay Chickerell, widow of Richard Chickerell, Class of 1970, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 19.

Bernice Gay Chickerell, 84, of Fairmont passed away on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at St. Barbara's Nursing Home in Monongah. She was born October 22, 1930 in Fairmont the daughter of the late Jack and Myrtie Kendall Cottrill. She was married to Richard Chickerell for 53 years until his passing in 2002.

Bernice was retired from Marion County Board of Education and had previously worked at St. Barbara's Nursing Home. She was a hard working woman who loved farming and working in the garden. Bernice enjoyed cooking and always loved helping with hotdog sales at Koons Run Park. She was known for her big heart and always helping anyone in need.

Bernice is survived by her five children, daughters, Sandra Olson of Shinnston, and Linda (Louis) Bernier of Westminster, MD; sons, Richard "Ike" (Laura) Chickerell. Tom (Jessica) Chickerell and Franklin Chickerell all of Koons Run. 

She is also survived by two sisters, Hilda Rapp of Lanham, Maryland and Velma (Bill) Harris of Ripley and one brother, Charles Lee (Penny) Cottrill of Kingmont; her grandchildren are, Charlie (Teri) Roberts and Steven Roberts, Issac (Trudy) Chickerell, Louis "Bud" Bernier, Teresa (Mark) Price, Kristin Chickerell, Carley Chickerell, Leslie Chickerell, Jenna Chickerell, Nicholas Chickerell and Jamie Chickerell and great grandchildren, Samantha Roberts, Shyanne Roberts, Jacob Roberts, Shay Roberts, Katie Allen, John Price, Gunner Chickerell and Thomas Scritchfield. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Selma and her grandson, Raymond Roberts. 

Friends and family may call at the Carpenter & ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, on Friday from 1pm to 9pm and on Saturday 10am to 11am. The funeral service will be at 11am on Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Charles Chipps officiating. Interment will follow at Pisgah Cemetery in Monongalia County.
