Monongah native Jonathan Gillespie passes away

Monongah native Jonathan Wayne Gillespie, who was living in Worthington, passed away Wednesday, August 31 in Monongah.

The 1973 North Marion directory lists a Mrs. John Gillespie, Class of 1959, but the obituary makes no mention of Jonathan’s wife, just his parents Deloris Wix Gillespie of Monongah and the late Wayne Gillespie, his predeceased sister, Myra Elizabeth Gillespie, and his daughters, Rebecca Gillespie Ogden of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Jackie Gillespie Hahn of Fairmont.

Jonathan’s obituary:

Mr. Gillespie was a Christian by faith. He was an employee for the City of Fairmont, working as a heavy equipment operator with the storm water crew. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling and various sporting events including the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jonathan was also a history buff.

Happy anniversary, Virginia and Pat! With the amalgamation of two Italian families I’m sure you’ll get plenty of good wishes. I can say that because my mother came to America from Italy when she was 9 years old.

‘Retired’ Steve Mikulski teaching again

After 3-day 'vacation'

Steve Mikulski, Class of 1964, who grew up in Carolina, stayed “retired” for 3 days.
He’s teaching again.
Reports Steve:
I am doing long-term subbing for Advanced AP Computer Programming 2 and 3 and Digital Technology Solutions. Mostly 11th and 12th graders. The young men and women in the classes are really smart and fun to be around. My drive each day is 115 miles round trip to Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg, MD. I only have four classes so I get back to Hanover, Pennsylvania around 2:30. This assignment ends in mid-October. Why do it? I really missed the kids and am not ready to let go.”

Steve retired from teaching engineering design in Montgomery County public schools in Maryland. Then they moved from Germantown, Maryland to Hanover, Pennsylvania.
Now Steve’s commuting back into Maryland to teach . . . again.
Wife Holly White Mikulski may have to put a tracking device on Steve.
Rick & Beth’s best man passes away

Best friends Rick and Tom
Rick Brooks, husband of Beth Pritchard Brooks, Class of 1978, lost his best friend, Tom Morgan. Tom had a heart attack and passed away.

Rick and Tom “were like brothers growing up” in Mannington and attending Mannington High, Beth reports. Rick is a son of Lester Eugene and Helen Gaylene Brooks.
Tom also was the best man at Rick and Beth’s wedding.
It is always sad to get bad news but even worse when it is on your birthday (August 30 is Beth’s birthday). We were so shocked and sad to learn of the loss of Rick's oldest, dearest and best friend. Our thoughts, prayers, love and deepest condolences go out to his entire family at this difficult and sad time. RIP, Tom. You will be greatly missed.”
Beth and Rick live on Harter Hill when Rick isn’t working on conveyor systems in Distribution Centers all over America.

This is a tale of three beautiful Monongah people.
We all know about Susan Staron Sanders, Class of 1971, an administrative assistant at Personnel, and her all-consuming drive to light up Monongah’s streets as cheerfully as possible for Christmas, raising $2,300 in the process.
Well, Susan vacationed in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, which is an incredibly scenic area. Naturally . . . well, let Susan explain it:
“Everyone knows how I love Christmas. While I was visiting many shops I went into the Christmas Chalet at Deep Creek. I was amazed at all the beautiful things. Caroline had to drag me out.”

Caroline Sparks is Susan’s cousin, a Pentagon retiree who lives in Falls Church, Virginia.
When Susan got home, another beautiful thing happened. Again, let Susan the Thomas Street Christmas angel tell it:
“The next great thing. When I got home I had the most beautiful letter and a check from Annie and Joe Eates. My heart was so overwhelmed with her letter that tears poured down my cheeks.

“I love these beautiful people. It's things like this that keep me following my dream to make our town shine. Thank you both so much.”
Ann DeMary Eates, Class of 1945 like Joe, is Monongah's super good-hearted Melanie of “Gone With the Wind." I’m biased because Ann and Joe are the godparents of my son, John Larry Olesky. My late wife Monnie and I couldn’t have made a better choice.
Ann has a sincere smile that could melt a Grinch’s heart and light up a room as brightly as Susan’s Christmas street lights.
Monongah is triple-blessed to have Ann, Joe and Susan living there.

Chris Shamrock Hennig home from hospital

Chris Shamrock Hennig, Class of 1967, “made it through her surgery just fine,” reports her son, Brian Hennig, adding, “No complications.”

Chris reports that she is home but "not feeling the greatest."

Chris had an electrophysiology study to test for arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats). Chris lives in Abilene, Texas. Husband Charlie Hennig is a retired college professor who once taught at Salem College.

Son Brian is a teacher in the Dallas School District.

Chris is the youngest of seven siblings. The others are John, Class of 1947; Joe, who attended Monongah High; Cecilia (Cil) Shamrock Eller, Class of 1955; Jim, who attended Monongah High; Paul, Class of 1962; and Mike, Class of 1966.

John, Joe and Cecilia are deceased.

The September Monongah High birthdays includes my favorite sister, Jackie Olesky Straight, Class of 1950, who lives in Rivesville.

She’s my only sibling, but let’s not quibble.

One name I had to remove from the birthdays list was the late Suzanne Barr Loss, Class of 1948, who would have been a year older on September 14.

One of Suzanne’s Worthington girlfriends during their Monongah High days is on the September list, too. That’s Bettie Hensley Lowther, also Class of 1948. I had a delightful visit with Bettie at her Pompano Beach, Florida, residence when Paula and I were in the Fort Lauderdale area in 2014.

Another of the Worthington dillies with a September birthday is Marylee Hertzog Gwinn, Class of 1948, who lives in Rockville, Maryland.

Suzanne, Bettie and Marylee were known as The Three Musketeers because they hung out together so much at Monongah High, and probably at Marylee’s dad’s Hertzog Drug Store in Worthington, and were Monongah High high-kicking majorettes together.

The late Jackie Godby Livingston, also Class of 1948, also was a majorette with that group. Her brother, the late Lawrence “Sonny” Godby, was in my Class of 1950 and part of the facietiously named Gang That Terrorized Marion County that included Robert “Satch” Kasper, who has homes in South Lyon and Presque Isle, Michigan; Steven “Bucky” Satterfield, a retired State Patrol officer living in St. Albans; Donald “Jake” Halpenny, who took his clarinet to Fairmont to live; Tony Eates, also living in Fairmont; the late Joe Manzo; the late Anthony “Plumber” DeMary; the late Tom “Judge” Starcher; Duane Harbert, who lives in Marlton, New Jersey; Frank Franze, who lives in Slidell, Louisiana; the late Ronnie “Coolie” Delovich; and John Olesky, the runt of the litter.

Apparently there was a lot of December chummy activity among the Class of 1948’s parents in 1929, because that class also has September birthdays for Mary Louise Orsini, who lives on Swisher Hill with Tony Orsini, of the famous six Orsini brothers; and Nathaleen Cameon Oliverio, who lives in East Chicago, Indiana, just outside the Windy City Chicago.

That’s five of the 19 September birthdays from the Class of 1948.
