Marion Countians poorest in West Virginia

Marion County, whose county seat is Fairmont, is last in West Virginia in median per capita income at $12,955. Gilmer ranks 54th and Doddridge is 53rd.

Jefferson, whose county seat is Charles Town, has the highest median income in West Virginia, at $29,733. That’s more than twice as well off as those who live in Marion County. The proximity to Metropolitan Washington, D.C. probably helps those numbers.

Putnam, who county seat is Winfield, is 2nd and Berkeley, whose county seat is Martinsburg, is 3rd.

The national average is $37,334. The state average is $21,232.
