Jim McDaniel, Class of 1960, met Mary Curry,
from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold,
Maryland.
They’re still hanging
out together, for their 36th wedding anniversary in Behobobeach, Delaware.
Jim is the youngest McDaniel sibling of famed Monongah streetcarstation master Ted McDaniel. So are Mary Jane McDaniel Pritchard and Donald McDaniel. Their sister, Joanne, still lives at the bottom of Kings Alley in Worthington.
Mary Curry's sister was Ava Curry Cogar, married to Fred Cogar and living on Cottage Avenue. Ava and my mother, Lena Futten Olesky, who lived across Camden Avenue (U.S. 19) with John W. Olesky, Sr., were best friends and often sat on our back porch and talked of many things.
Jim recalls: "I did know your Mother, Lena, as I visited my aunt Ava Cogar across Rt. 19 from your house and they were good friends." Indeed, they were, Jim. I learned some of my first coarse words from Ava, who was plain-spoken but a quality person.

Their father was Carroll Curry, who owned the hotel, theater and bank in Monongah. His Mom and her 5 siblings were raised in the hotel.

Jim is an Air Force retiree after 23 years in that branch. Jim's oldest son served 21 years in the Air Force. Donald was in the Army for 16 years.
Donald
played on the Monongah High football team that did not score a point the entire season.
Mary Jane’s daughters are Jane “Nene” Pritchard
Moore, Class of 1975, and Beth Pritchard Brooks, Class of 1978.
The Harbert family once lived next door
to the McDaniel family on Water Street in Worthington. Joanne
McDaniel, Theresa Demus and Duane Harbert played together as children,
including at birthday parties in Worthington.
Duane, who lives in Marlboro, New
Jersey, is a son of former Thoburn School principal Frank Harbert and former
Worthington Grade School teacher Goldie Harbert.
Duane’s brother, John Harbert, Class of
1955, and his wife, Karen Colvin, Class of 1955, are deceased.
Happy wedding anniversary, Jim
and Mary! If you want to congratulate them you can go to their Facebook sites.
