West Virginia’s loss is Florida’s gain
70% of those who live in West Virginia
were born in this state.
In 1900 and 1950, 81% were West
Virginia natives, so more are moving out of than into the state. No surprise to anyone paying attention. The young go where the better-paying jobs are.
In Ohio the progression from 1900 to
1950 to 2010 was from 71% to 70% to 75%, which indicates more moving in than
moving out.
Pennsylvania’s percentages are 77%, 80%
and 74%, adding more residents until 1950, then losing ground.
Florida’s numbers: 65%, 43% and 33%,
with the influx percentage doubling from 1900. Probably because the Sunshine
State absorbed those who left the northern states.
The 150 or so who attend the monthly
meeting of the West Virginia Club give testament to the migration.
