Mother of married Monongah children passes away

Alma Gay Boyce of Fairmont, mother of Monongah’s Steven Boyce and Sheila Boyce Martin, passed away Thursday, Aug. 7.

Alma Gay Boyce, 78, of Prickett's Creek Road, Fairmont, passed away Thursday, August 7, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Marion County on May 13, 1936, a daughter of the late Ralph William and Opal Gail (McHenry) Burns Jenkins VanGilder.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 45 years, Harry Brady Boyce on December 26, 2000.

Alma was a loving homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a strong willed woman with a heart of gold and a determination to overcome any obstacle in her path. She found good in everyone and would invite them into her heart. She especially loved "her babies" and told everyone about them. She loved working with a needle and thread making handmade clothing for her children. She made quilts by hand, embroidery and crocheting. She loved tending to houseplants and flowers of all kind.

She was a long standing member of Fellowship Baptist Church, being saved in her faith. Her bright blue eyes and sweet personality was loved by everyone who knew her.

She is survived by one son, Steven W. Boyce and his wife Regina of Monongah, five daughters, Brenda Moore and her husband Ronald of Fairmont, Sandra "Sandy" Raines and her husband David of Fairmont, Sheila Martin of Monongah, Cynthia "Cindy" Minor of Fairmont and Vicki Connell of Belington, 14 grandchildren, Ronald Moore II, Andrew Moore, Stephen Boyce, Kari Jones, Joseph Raines, Matthew Raines, Justin Raines, Crystal Tustin, DeAnna Spencer, Jennifer Williams, Benjamin Knight, Jerrimy Knight, Nathan Knight and Breanna Connell and 13 great-grandchildren, Brittany McDonald, Alexis Boyce, Brendan Jones, Jeffrey Jones, Julienne Raines, Eli Spencer, Addison Spencer, Rhyan Knight, Kayleb Knight, Elyzabeth Knight, Isybella Knight and two on the way.

Also surviving are five brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Chris Smith, Chester Boyce, Sue and Tom Duncan and Freda Helms.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca "Becky" Darlene Boyce, a sister, Iva Gayle Smith, a brother, Ivan Dail Burns, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, a half-brother, Frazier "Junior" Jenkin and two sons-in-law, Tom Connell and Jim Knight.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St. Fairmont on Sunday from 1-8 pm and Monday from 11 am – 2 pm. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Monday, August 11, 2014 at 2 pm with Pastor Glenn Stevenson officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Marion County.
