Dr. David Bonasso’s dental assistant in Fairmont is in West Virginia’s largest lake with 28,000 acres of water and 60 miles of shoreline because of the 1960s Gauley River rock-fill dam.
It’s a good idea to know how the swim. The water is as deep as 327 feet.
Usually, a dam is named for the nearest town or a significant person. But the town – Gad – was flooded and no one wanted to name it the Gad Dam, so Summersville got the honor.

Summersville is on U.S. 19 about 45 miles from Charleston.
