Green Hills golf champ passes away

Betty Ann Barnes Middlemas, who often won Green Hills Country Club golf championships, passed away Monday.

Betty Ann (Barnes) Middlemas, 82, of Pleasant Valley, passed away Monday, Aug. 4, at Fairmont General Hospital surrounded by her loving son and daughter-in-law.

She was born July 29, 1932, a daughter of the late Frank R. and Martha (Bainbridge) Barnes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry E. Middlemas II, on December 20, 2012.

Betty was a graduate of East Fairmont High School and attended Fairmont State College.
Betty was an avid golfer and longtime member of Green Hills Country Club. She was a former president of the country club and won multiple women's championship titles. Before Betty discovered her love of golf, she was a fervent bowler and belonged to a bowling league.

Betty operated Fairmont Appliance on Merchant Street and also worked for a time at Country Club Health Spa and Shucks Fleet Service.

She is survived by her son, Harry E. "Hank" Middlemas III and his wife Kimberly (Farcin) Middlemas of Fairmont; four grandchildren, Joseph Lake, Matthew Middlemas and his wife Rebecca, Jonathan Middlemas and Hope Middlemas; two great-grandchildren, Logan Williams and Abigail Middlemas; and several nieces and nephews including William J. "Bill" Hawkins Jr. and his wife Patty, Gary Hawkins and his wife Elaine, and Edward "Eddie' Hawkins and his wife Carlotta.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, James "Bud" Barnes; and two sisters Margaret Ann Barnes and Doris Jean Hawkins.


Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St. Fairmont on Wednesday from 4-8 pm and Thursday from 10-11 am. The funeral service will be in the funeral home on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 11 am with Pastor James Saunders officiating. Interment will follow at Samuel Linn Cemetery in Benton's Ferry.
