Continues marching despite a broken cane

Jackie Olesky Straight, Class of 1955, recalls a moment from family lore in this Fairmont Times Christmas Memories item:

In your column Dec. 12, you commented on the warm weather for the Christmas parade.

My daughter, Lea Ann Straight Barnes, was drum major in 1983 for the Rivesville High School marching band. It was a very cold evening (perhaps in the 30s) when the Christmas parade took place.

Lea Ann was given a huge styrofoam candy cane instead of her usual baton. As the crowd waited on the street by the old post office, the parade went by us.

We could see the Rivesville band coming and, about the time Lea Ann was getting close to us, her candy cane broke into two pieces!

I was proud of her as she continued directing with half of a cane. I guess the cold weather was the culprit!

After all of these years we still laugh about that day, but Lea Ann certainly didn’t see any humor when it happened that night.

Jackie’s other children are Belinda Straight Morris and Renee Straight.

Renee is the WVU Ruby Memorial Hospital pharmacist who handles our Mountaineer Field season tickets and parking every year. I just write out a check and she takes care of everyone for my two seats and her seats with Jackie and Renee.
