WVU soccer’s Katie Barnes shot as lawwoman

WVU Sports Hall of Fame soccer player Katie Barnes, a Warren County, Ohio deputy sheriff,  was shot Thursday while trying to stop a domestic dispute.
Katie played high school soccer in nearby Mason, where she lives today. She was released from Cincinnati’s University Hospital on Friday. She was shot in the lower abdomen.

Mohammad Abdu Laghaoui, 19, was taken into custody. He was charged with shooting his father in the hand, and Katie and with firing at a neighbor with an AK-47.

Katie has been with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office for seven and a half years.

She played for WVU from 1998-2001, started every match, got the Mountaineers into its first NCAA tournament as a junior in 2000, when she scored 17 goals, had 9 assists for a 43-point season.
 
She was with three pro soccer teams, including a league championship season, then was an assistant soccer coach at Alabama before beginning her law enforcement career.
