Helen Mary Hall Tartell, Class of 1945,
widow of Monongah’s famous flier Louis Tartell, passed away March 2 in Etna,
Ohio.

Her parents were Harvey and Hazel (Davis) Hall of Monongah, where Helen was born.
Helen was the Monongah High Black
Diamond yearbook staff her senior year.
Her siblings, Rebecca Hall Chefren, Class of 1940, and Robert
Hall are both deceased.
Besides Louie, the children of Lee and Josephine Mainella
Tartell are Loraine Tartell Meredith, Class of 1944; Alda Tartell,
Class of 1945, Eugene “Hammer” Tartell, Class of 1951; Liz Tartell Shultz; Dave
Tartell; and Christina “Tina” Tartell, Class of 1953.
Louis was a legend in Monongah when he would land his biplane on
Claude Domico Hill and other West Virginia hilltops. He always drew crowds.
Later, he was a Marine pilot in the Pacific during World War II.
Alda was on the senior girls basketball team captained by Freda
Brzuzy that the class tournament. She also was in the senior class play.
Tina and Virginia DeMary Rossi, both Class of 1953, were born on
the same day – April 24, 1935 -- and died two hours apart on the same day –
August 20, 1982 -- and were best friends for life. They were MHS Student
Council representatives together for their senior class in 1953.
Tina was the maid of honor at Virginia’s wedding to James Rossi. David
Tartell was a pallbearer at Michael DeMary’s funeral in 2007. Tina
was Paula Rossi Wiley’s godmother.
Virginia DeMary Rossi is buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery on Park
Avenue in Monongah. Nearby are the side-by-side graves of Lee and Josephine
Tartell, Tina’s parents, and Lucy and Anthony DeMary, Virginia’s father’s
brother.
Virginia’s parents, Frank and Lena Duva DeMary, are buried in
Grandview Memorial Park, off E. Grafton Road in Fairmont.
Etna is just north of I-70 and east of
Columbus and west of Buckeye Lake, where Bill Meredith, Class of 1957, and wife
Roleta live when they’re not in their other home in Sarasota, Florida.

Helen was born July 28, 1927 to
the late Harvey and Hazel (Davis) Hall in Monongah, WV.
She is retired from Nationwide
Children's Hospital and is a member of the Daughters of the American
Revolution. Helen was actively involved in the Girl Scouts of America and
served as the Reynoldsburg Service Unit Director.
She loved playing the piano,
reading, quilting, knitting, and crocheting. Helen also enjoyed traveling and
genealogy.
She is survived by her sons,
Ronald (Sandy) Griffin and Robert (Janice) Tartell; daughters, Debra (Dale)
Matthews, Linda (Mark) Pugh; many grandchildren, Jeremy (Leslie) Tartell,
Aleesha Tartell, Ryon Tartell, Phillip (Wendy) Griffin, Jeffrey (Rachel)
Griffin, Adam Matthews, Amie (Tim) Wright; great grandchildren; many nieces and
nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by
her husband, Louis Tartell; brother, Robert (Ethel) Hall; and sisters,
Katherine Hall, Rebekah (Rudy) Chefren.
A visitation will be held on
MONDAY, March 7, 2016, from 6 - 8 p.m. at the PFEIFER FUNERAL HOME,
Reynoldsburg. Her Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Tuesday, 11 a.m. at
the St. Pius X Catholic Church, with Msgr. David Funk officiating. Friends are
asked to meet at the church. Interment will be in Dayton National Veterans
Cemetery on Thursday, March 10, 2016, 1 p.m.

Louie’s obituary:
Louis Tartell, age 85, of Etna, passed away at home
on Nov. 18, 2009. Born Sept. 20, 1924, and raised at Monongah, W.Va. to the
late Lee and Josephine (Mainella) Tartell.
He proudly serviced his country in
Marines during WWII in the Pacific Theater. Louis is retired from AGMC in
Newark.
He enjoyed woodworking, painting and flying. He especially loved to fly
his bi-plane and seaplane around the hills of W. Va.
He is survived by his
wife, Helen (Hall) Tartell; sons, Ronald (Sandy) Griffin, and Robert (Janice)
Tartell; daughters, Debra (Dale) Matthews, and Linda (Mark) Pugh;
grandchildren, Jeremy, Aleesha and Ryon Tartell, Phillip and Jeffrey (Rachel)
Griffin, Adam Matthews, Amie Pugh; great grandchildren; brothers, Eugene
(Helena) Tartell, and David Tartell; sisters, Elizabeth Shultz and Elda
(Stanley) Sharpe; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his
parents, brother Phillip Tartell, sisters Christina Arnett and Lorraine
Meredith.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the St. Pius X Catholic
Church in Reynoldsburg, on Monday, November 23 at 10:30 a.m., with Monsignor
David Funk officiating. No funeral procession, instead we will meet at church.
Friends will be received at the PFEIFER FUNERAL HOME, Reynoldsburg on Sunday
from 2-5 p.m. Interment will be in Dayton National Cemetery.
