June Paxton
Rogers remembers Cassy Ryan as her Carolina coach
June Paxton
Rogers, Class of 1948, remembers that Cassy Ryan did more than coach Mannington
High athletes.
Let June
tell it:
“Hi John –
“I also
remember Cassy Ryan well. When I was a
young girl he coached
our
Carolina girls softball team and we were pretty good! If I remember right,
he coached
us for quite a few years. A lot of fun!
“When I got
too old for softball, I started playing golf and really enjoy that a lot! If I could make it to The Villages, I would
challenge you to a golf game.
“Thanks
again for all of the interesting news of MHS friends.
“June”
Joe Martin, Class of 1957, of Treasure Island, Florida, remembers another
non-Mannington High virtue of Cassy:
“Who could forget Cassy Ryan . . . We Carolina boys looked
forward to summer and Cassy opening up the Carolina playground, thanks to our
beloved Cassy.”
Are you
sure, June, that you want to challenge the guy who with the help of Bob Kasper
and Tony Eates finished last in the 2000 MHS Golf Scramble and, to prove it
wasn’t a fluke, matched that feat in 2005. Maybe that’s what killed the MHS
Golf Scramble. We certainly killed a lot of turf.
June golfs at Green Hills Country club. She’s played in MHS alumni scrambles before they died outfor lack of enough entries -- with Nick Fiori, Betty Hensley Lowther, John Matkovich, Eddie Lusczynski and Junior Koloskie.
June’s sisters are are Mary Jean Paxton Ryan, Class of 1946, and
Lois Paxton Dufour, Class of 1944, who is deceased.
June also visits her granddaughter in Lexington, near Mansfield, Ohio, and a daughter in Zeeland, near Holland on Lake Michigan.
If you have memories of Cassy Ryan or the Paxton family, email John Olesky at jo4wvu@neo.rr.com and I’ll add them to the Monongah High Alumni blog.
