Mass, visitation for Danny Wood

There will be a Mass at 11 a.m. Saturday,  August 12 in Monongah’s Holy Spirit Catholic Church for Danny Wood, who passed away July 24 in Monongah. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the church.

Danny was predeceased by his wife, Monongah High grad Rosalie Hestick Wood.

Danny is survived by his children, Denise Roncone, Class of 1976, of Monongah, Kevin Wood, Class of 1978, of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; 1983 North Marion grad Janine Watson of Shinnston; and Charles Wright Jr. of Enterprise.

Danny’s siblings are David Wood of Warren, Ohio; Sally Wood Tarley, Class of 1959, of Hilton Head, South Carolina; Ida Wood Burwitz of Ringgold, Georgia;  Sherma Addington of Rossville, Georgia; and Emma "Gene" Peters of Hutto, Texas.  Danny was predeceased by siblings Robert Morris, Class of 1964, Charles Morris, Harley Wood, General Leonard Wood, Mary Lou Morris, Jerry Skormsley and Ruby Lee Wood.

Danny’s obituary:

Daniel Lewis Wood, 78, of Monongah passed away Monday July 24, 2017 at his residence.

Danny was born October 16, 1938 the son of the late Newton Samuel Wood and Lelia Lieving Morris.

At 13 yrs. old, Danny's first job was a Mule Skinner at Peoria Mines. His notable jobs include: Delivery Driver for Garvin's Dairy, Owner of Lewis's Construction Company, Mine Foreman at Loveridge Mine and Pittsburgh Coal Works, Harrison County Board of Education/Gore Career Center General Mining Teacher, Mayor of Monongah, and the Owner/Operator of The Prime Time Lounge and The Hunting & Fishing Stop. 

Danny compassionately donated his body to the West Virginia Human Gift Registry to become a source of life to others. 

Danny is survived by his children ; Denise Roncone and her husband Michael of Monongah , Kevin Wood and his wife Karen of Mechanicsburg , PA; Janine Watson and her husband Jeff of Shinnston and Charles Wright Jr. and his wife Cheryl “Joann” of Enterprise; one brother David Wood of Warren Ohio, Sisters; Sally Tarley of Hilton Head , SC, Ida Burwitz and her husband Dale of Ringgold, Ga.,  Sherma Addington and Fay LaVonne "Bonnie" Peters of Rossville, Ga, and Emma "Gene" Peters of Hutto, Texas.  
   
Grandchildren: Danielle Williams, Cipriana (Gene) Greek, Kyle Trevor Wood, Logan Walton, Petty Officer Third Class Jullian Watson, Clista Pizzi (Ricky), Talon Lester, Shawn (Kayla) Palmer and Chad Palmer.

Great Grandchildren: Jayden Walton and Brooks Brown, Mason, Carder, Thomas, and Noel Greek, Raven (LCPL Elijah) Stull  and Talon Lester, Gino, Vinnie and Holly Pizzi , Brooklyn and Brayden Palmer and several nieces and nephews. 
   
In addition to his parents,  Danny is preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Rosalie Hestick Wood, who passed away April 27, 2015.
   
He was also preceded in death by brothers Robert Morris, Charles Morris, Harley Wood and General Leonard Wood, Sisters Mary Lou Morris, Jerry Skormsley, and Ruby Lee Wood.

Danny was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.  

He was a member of The American Legion, UMWA, and Carpenter's Union.  He served in the WV National Guard and was trained by HQ Battery, 101st ABN DIV Artillery, Ft. Jackson, SC.

He was a wonderful historian on Monongah events.  He hosted many Family and Friends events at his home and farm.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing, boating and camping, riding his Harley, NASCAR, and watching WVU sporting events with Rose.  An avid gun enthusiast, he attended many gun shows, turkey shoots, and served as one of the community's leading gun SMEs.  

Danny organized many Annual  Muscular Dystrophy Poker Runs that raised over $200K for Jerry's Kids, the 1st WV State HOG Rally, and a Monongah Town Celebration that later turned into the town's Annual Festival.

The family will receive friends Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in  Monongah from 9:30am to 11:00 am. At 10:15 AM a "Celebration of Life" invitation followed by a Memorial Mass at 11:00 AM with Fr. S.A.Arokiadass as celebrant. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.domicofh.com .

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Soup Opera, Monongah Alumni Association, Monongah Town Festival, or Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
