Helen Retton Marchiny passes away
Helen Retton Marchiny, who grew up on
Jackson Street in Monongah as a child of Tom Retton and Joan Conge Retton, passed away Monday, June 16
in New Jersey.
I couldn't find a Monongah High graduation year for Helen. Maybe the family moved from Monongah before she graduated. Frank Franze, Class of 1950, remembers Helen being "a year ahead of us at Sts. Peter and Paul" Catholic School in Monongah.

Her sister, Ann Retton Schrippa,
Class of 1953, lives in Shinnston. Another sister, Rosalee Retton Carter, lives
in Clarksburg.
There’s also a Mary Theresa Retton,
Class of 1948, among Monongah alumni.
Helen’s dad, Tom Retton, is indelibly etched into my memories. On one of many occasions when I rode my wagon or other toy over the holler when the Olesky family lived on Thomas Street at the Church Street intersection, I was lying unconscious at the bottom of the holler.

Tom saw me, went down, picked me up,
knocked on our Thomas Street back door, handed my limp body to my mom, Lena
Futten Olesky, and said, “Here’s your son.”
It was one of many times that my mother developed palpitations and gray hair over wondering if I would live to be an adult.
If you have memories of or information about
the Retton family, which is spread through Monongah and Fairview highs history, email John Olesky at jo4wvu@neo.rr.com and I’ll add your information in another MHS Alumni blog article.
