Best view of New River Gorge: Long
Point
The best view of the 53-mile-long New
River Gorge is from Long Point. So writes Bob Downing of the Akron Beacon
Journal.
From Long Point, you can see the
876-foot high 3,030-foot span of the New River Bridge, the one that’s used for
parachuting and bungy jumping off on Bridge Day every year.
It can be tricky. You’re 800 feet
above the river and there are no railings. And you can’t drive up to it. You
have to walk or mountain bike 1.6 miles to it from the road.
You
get to Long Point from Fayetteville and U.S. 19 by taking state Route 16 south
to Gatewood Road. Turn left onto Gatewood for 1.9 miles.
Then turn left on
Newton Road. The trailhead will be on your left.
