West Virginia University is concerned
that Trump’s ban on immigrants from some Muslim countries entering the United
States might affect as many as 127 of its students.
That’s why William Brustein, WVU vice president for global strategies and
international affairs, warned the students not to leave America and risk not
being allowed to return.
WVU has four students from Yemen, 13 from
Syria, 27 from Libya, 13 from Iraq, 69 from Iran and one from Sudan, countries
affected by Trump’s action. No Somalian students attend the school.
A federal judge issued an emergency order that those who arrived in the U.S. or are in transit to America cannot be deported. They may still be detained.
Even taking a trip to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls would
be risky, the students fear.
WVU is a part of the
Institute of International Education’s Syrian Refugee Program and has privately
financed students from the Middle East who need financial aid.
