Shirley Layne Russell passes away


Shirley Layne Russell, Class of 1954, passed away Friday, January 20. Shirley married Charles Russell and lived in Fairmont.

She grew up on Willow Road St. Barbara Nursing Home in Monongah alongside her 11 siblings. The Layne, Kubiet and Kasper families lived in 3 houses in a row.

Her sister, Doris, married the guy next door, Joe Kubiet, Jr. and they still live in Monongah.

They grew up playing with Evelyn Kasper Boggess, who still lives in the Kasper home of her childhood with husband Otis Boggess, and Bob Kasper, who has homes in South Lyon and Presque Isle (Grand Lake), Michigan.

Shirley’s other siblings are Judy Layne Alkire; Carol Layne Elliott of Mill Fall, married to Ronald Elliott; and JoAnne Layne Snider of Monongah, married to William Snider; and, all deceased, Bradley, Charles, David, Johnny and Robert Layne and Betty Layne Bowyer and Margaret Layne Faber.

Shirley Ann Layne Russell, 80, of Fairmont, WV passed away Friday, January 20, 2017 at her residence.  She was born August 9, 1936 in Monongah, WV, daughter of the late Charles and Mary Jackson Layne.  

Shirley was a member of the Cross of Christ Community Church of Monongah, and former employee of Westinghouse Lamp Plant.  She was a 1954 graduate of Monongah High School and a member of the WV Region Antique Automobile Club of America.

Shirley is survived by her husband Charles F. Russell; four sisters, Doris Kubiet of Monongah, Joann Snider and husband Bill of Ohio, Judy Alkire of the Winfield Community, Carol Elliot and husband Ron of Mill Fall; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Robert, Johnny, Charles, Dave and Bradley Layne; two sisters, Betty Bowyer and Margaret Faber.

Friends and family may call at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Ave. in Fairmont from 11 to 1 p.m. Tuesday. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with Pastor Carl Streyle officiating.  Interment will follow at the I.O.O.F Cemetery in Enterprise.
