Mazurek, Class of 1943, passed away Saturday, February 11.
Alfred Mazurek, 91, of Fairmont passed away
Saturday morning February 11, 2017, at Fairmont Health and Rehabilitation
Center. He was born on June 2, 1925, in Spillertown, Illoinois son of the late
Stefan and Mary Jamack Mazurek.
Al graduated from Barrackville High School and
enlisted in the Merchant Marine Corp where he served in the Atlantic, pacific,
and Mediterranean Middle East War Zones during World War II. He received
honorable discharges from the Merchant marines, Coast Guard and Navy in 1945.
Following the war, he attended Fairmont State College and graduated from Coyne
Electrical School in Chicago, Illinois. He was a sixty year member of the
International Brotherhood of Electical Workers, ending his career as a master
electrician at Alcan Aluminum Corporation (Novelis). Alfred was a member of St.
Anthony’s Catholic Church in Watson. His community memberships included the
VFW, Knights of Columbus and BPO Elks Lodge 294. Al was a lifelong musician who
played in several local orchestras during the big band era and was a dedicated
member of the United Mine Workers of America Band. He enjoyed entertaining the
community and playing at numerous UMWA national conventions. Al loved his
family, cooking, and golf and pursued the art of fly fishing to perfection.
Alfred is survived by his wife of 69 years, Irene
Vingle Mazurek of Fairmont, his daughters Nancy Laughlin (David) of Fairmont,
Joni Mazurek of Summersville, and son Bruce Mazurek (Pamela) of Martinsville,
VA. His grandchildren are Gevony Laughlin Williams (Chris) of Pittsburgh, PA;
Mannon Laughlin Gilroy (Liam) of Staten, Island, NY; Conn Laughlin of Fairmont;
Garrett Prendergast (Tsoomoo) of Alexandria, VA; Ross Prendergast of
Summersville; Hillary Mazurek of Miami, FL; Violet and Sophia Mazurek of
Martinsville, VA. He is also survived by his brother Steve Mazurek (Katherine)
of Pensacola, FL and several nieces and nephews. He was especially proud to
share pictures of his great-grandchildren Cameron and McKenzie Prendergast, and
Kean Gilroy.
Al wished to be remembered as a Christian, husband,
father, grandfather, veteran, musician and fisherman.

Fairmont Avenue Fairmont on Wednesday from 3-7:00 P.M. Funeral Services will be
held Thursday at 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home with Deacon Lou Belldina,
Officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Marion County Veterans Council will conduct full
Military honors at the cemetery.

States Merchant Marine Academy Foundation at 14 Bond Street - #1000, Great
Neck, NY 11021 or to Catholic Charities of West Virginia at 2000 Main Street,
Wheeling, WV 26003.
