Helen Ashcraft Hess passes away

Helen Hess -- mother of Mike Hess, Class of 1975, Robert Hess; Pam Hess Ice; and Linda Renay Hess Postlethwait, Class of 1968 – passed away Sunday, February 5.

Robert and his wife Aleta Marie live in Worthington. Mike and his companion Parma Kay Fetty, Class of 1973, live in Belleview. Linda and her husband Charles Gregory live in Durham, North Carolina. Pam lives in Fairmont.

She underwent surgery for infection around her Pacemaker. Mike had been her regular bedside companion.

Helen Hess
Helen Louise Hess, 86, of Fairmont, Bellview Community, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2017 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. She was born in Marion County on August 16, 1930 the only daughter of the late Arlie Ray Ashcraft and Lula Virginia (Hall) Ashcraft.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Robert Hess in April of 1999.


Helen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She had worked briefly at Westinghouse lamp plant and G. C. Murphy store in Fairmont. She enjoyed yard sales and going out to eat. Most of all, she enjoyed time spent with her family and her cat Jasmine.


She is survived by her four children; her sons, Robert Keith Hess and his wife Aleta Marie of Worthington and Michael Ray Hess and his companion Parma Kay Fetty of Bellview; her daughters, Linda Renay Postlethwait and her husband Charles Gregory of Durham, North Carolina and Pamela Dee Ice of Fairmont; her very special grandchildren and their spouses, Melissa "Mitzie" and Scott Williams, Jeremey Keith and Ashley Hess, Joyce Ann Hess, Amy Marie and Brandon Bell, Jeffrey Pat Ice II and Michelle Nicole Ice, Michael Ray Ice, Brandon Keith Postlethwait, Charles Gregg and Ariana Postlethwait and her great grandchildren, Brianna N. L. Postlethwait, Hunter Scott Williams, Alexis Christine Williams, Hailie Alana Hess, Brayden Keith Hess, Peyton McKenzie Ice and Chase Robert Ice.
Also surviving is her brother, Gerald Ashcraft and his wife Dixie of Bellview.


In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, James "Jimmy" Ashcraft and an infant grandson, Robert Craig Postlethwait.


Friends and family may call at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, Fairmont on Wednesday from 1pm to 8pm and on Thursday 10 am to 11am. The funeral service will be at 11am on Thursday February 9, 2017 at the funeral home with Adam Stuck officiating. Interment services will follow at West Virginia National Cemetery.
