Rusty Spur bar catches fire in Monongah
By Allen Clayton, WBOY-TV

The sheriff's department said the building's owners were in the process of renovating the old Rusty Spur with hopes to turn it into a thrift shop. Officials believe the cause of the fire was electrical in nature. The Monongah Fire Department is continuing to investigate.

Deputies said while they were at the fire, they arrested a man for DUI after they said he drove through the scene and nearly hit a deputy.

Firefighters were on the scene for approximately two hours on Friday night.

The fire was on Freedom Highway at the Old Rusty Spur in Monongah. Fire departments responded just after 9 p.m.

The Monongah Volunteer Fire Department said the building had been abandoned for eight years. They believe utilities were turned on. They also said that they believe an extension cord running into a back room from an adjacent house could be the cause of the fire.

Monongah Fire Department also said the fire doesn’t seem suspicious and the building is a total loss.

The Monongah Volunteer Fire Department, the Worthington Fire Department, and Pleasant Valley Fire Department all responded to the scene.  Marion County Rescue Squad and Marion County Sheriff's Department were also on the scene.

According to Facebook posts, the building was owned by Dale Michaels, who has the brick house behind the bar and is a bus driver for the Marion County Transit Authority.
