Shockey Mayle, Class of 1964, passed away Wednesday, August 1.

He is survived by wife Brenda Mayle.

Shockey’s parents are Paul Mayle and the late Veldine Mayle Mayle. His first wife was Linda Hettrick of Hubbard, Ohio. Shockey’s children are Jude and Tara.  He also has 3 stepdaughters.

Steve Mayle, Class of 1968, is Shockey’s brother.
Another brother, Texan Dewayne "Sonny" Mayle, is buried in the West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton. Shockey will join Sonny there.

Shockey was a starter on defense for the 1963 Monongah High football team that came within 12 points of going undefeated and was one of the captains for the 1963-64 Lions basketball team.

He attended the 2014 Monongah High Alumni Reunion in Fairmont and the Four States #20 mine survivors reunion several years ago.

Veldine passed away in 2001 in her Carolina home after 61 years of marriage to Paul.

Coach Jim Feltz, who handled the 1963 team, brought Monongah High its first two state football titles in 1952 and 1955 and only baseball title in 1955. The late Lions legendary leader, with the help of his widow, Betty Lynn Wilson Feltz, Class of 1954, produced the son, Jay Feltz, who quarterbacked Monongah High to the 1973 state title and was named state Amateur of the Year for his athletic exploits.

The late Coach Earl Keener brought Monongah the 1968 and 1969 titles, thanks in large part to a pair of state champ track runners, Kerry Marbury and Charlie Miller, who both played football for West Virginia University, and in 1968 quarterback Nick Saban. Today Nick, known as Brother in Marion County, has six national college football titles as the coach at Alabama (5) and LSU (1).
