Emission standards closing 3 state
power plants
Philip Sporn, Kammer and Kanawha
Valley coal-fired power plants in West Virginia will be closed by the end of
May, Columbus, Ohio-based American Electric Power said, to meet stricter
federal emission standards.
AEP also will close the Muskingum
River Plant in Ohio, the Tanners Creek Plant in Indiana and the Glen Lyn Plant
in Virginia. The closures will affect more than 250 workers – plus the coal
miners laid off or not hired to provide the coal for the plants.
AEP plans to retire more than 6,000 megawatts of coal-fired generation in seven states by 2016.
