Family Dollar opening postponed

The Family Dollar Store in Monongah won’t open till June, Mayor Greg Vandetta said the owner of Parkway Contractors in Chuckey, Tennessee told him on Monday.

Added Greg:

“They are supposed to provide me a date in the near future. We've waited for several years so another month should go by fast. (I hope)”

This began in early 2014 so my math says it’s been at least three years since the store was announced for Monongah. At least the building has been constructed after the Huntington Bank building was razed at the Walnut Avenue at Camden Avenue (U.S. 19) site where the Pulice, Fiori and Gumont families took turns living before the home was torn down to make way for the bank.

Family Dollar was acquired in 2015 by Dollar Tree for $9.2 billion but is keeping the Family Dollar name on some of its stores.

Dollar Tree, whose headquarters is in Chesapeake, Virginia, has 4,900 stores. Family Dollar, based in Matthews, North Carolina, had 1,400 stores. Dollar General, out of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, has more than 10,000 stores.

In 1959 Leon Levine opened the first Family Dollar store ever, in Charlotte, North Carolina.
