PHILIPPI -- The North
Marion Lady Huskies secured their spot in the Class AA state basketball
tournament with a 65-29 win over Philip Barbour on Wednesday at Philip Barbour
High School in the Class AA Region I co-final.
Coach Mike Parrish's Lady
Huskies raced out to an early 22-5 lead after the first quarter, an advantage
they extended to 47-10 by halftime.
While the North Marion
offense cooled off in the second half, only scoring 18 points, the defense did
not let up, only surrendering 19 points in the final two periods en route to
the 65-29 win.
The suffocating NMHS
defense forced Philip Barbour, the Reigion I Section 2 champions, into 33
turnovers in the game.
North Marion had nearly
twice as many field goal attempts as the Colts, converting on 26-of-86 shot
attempts while limiting Philip Barbour to just 10 made baskets on 47
shots.
Taylor Buonamici led the
NMHS offense with 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting to go along with six assists
and five steals. Christa Tobin also reached double figures for the Lady Huskies
with 11 points.
While North Marion was
out-rebounded by Philip Barbour 53-52, the Lady Huskies held a big advantage on
the offensive glass, pulling down 27 offensive boards. Brittany Sanders' eight
rebounds were a team high. Lauren Freels had seven rebounds for NMHS while
Hannah Shriver, Tobin and Cara Minor had five apiece.
The NMHS backcourt of
Tobin and fellow senior Presley Tuttle will make their fourth consecutive appearance
in the state tournament, which begins next Wednesday at the Charleston Civic
Center.
The Lady Huskies will
have to wait to find out their opponent until the final Class AA regional
co-final between Westside and Riverview is played Thursday.
