West Virginia built the East River Mountain Tunnel in 1974 that crossed into Virginia before the exit.

The Cumberland Gap Tunnel in 1996 feed traffic between Kentucky and Tennessee although the intersection with Virginia is nearby.

They are the only two tunnels in America between two states.

The East River Tunnel is between Bluefield, West Virginia and Rocky Gap, Virginia, only 20 miles from the Big Walker Mountain Tunnel.

The Cumberland Gap Tunnel carries U.S. Route 25E traffic under Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. Between Middlesboro, Kentucky and Cumberland Gap, Tennessee, it replaced “Massacre Mountain” (because so many travelers died trying to maneuver on the twisting road).

Other tunnels in West Virginia:

Hutchinson Tunnel, Monongahela Railway, abandoned to railway use, north of Fairmont, West Virginia, currently a bike trail.

Kingwood Tunnel, Tunnelton, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, old tunnel abandoned, new tunnel in use.
