Dietta Harden Goush, Class of 1959,
who is closing in on $10,000 in Brogan Camille Goush Scholarship Fund in memory
of her granddaughter who lost her battle with Ewing’s Sarcoma cancer at the age
of 14 in 2009, will be able to make Saturday’s 6-9 p.m. J&J&Lions
Get-Together in the Monongah Town Hall after all.
“I only need two more years if my
body holds up that long,” Dietta told me.
Fairmont
West High awards the scholarships in the name of Brogan, who attended West
before her passing.
This an amazing tale of a grandmother’s
honoring her granddaughter.
Dietta thought a previous commitment
would keep her from attending Saturday’s gathering of family, cousins, friends,
Monongah High alumni and Monongah residents who didn’t graduate from Monongah
High. But she was able to work it out so that she can honor both commitments.
Dietta will be joined by her husband,
Paul Roush, Class of 1954, one of 9 children of Paul and Katherine Goush.
Dietta and Paul live on Cottage Avenue, just across U.S. 19 from my Church
Street childhood home till I was 22 years old.
The Brogan Camille Raddish playground is next to the
Rails of Trails by the Monongah town parking lot.
When Brogan was 13, she received an autographed photo of Brother, a football signed by all the players and a sweatsuit from Alabama. Brogan's mother, Marcie, has the items enclosed in glass.
Then-West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin spoke at Brogan’s funeral. Today, he is U.S. Senator Joe Manchin.
The
father of Brother’s wife, Terry Constable Saban, and Paul Goush worked together
in the mines for years and Terry’s dad put the kitchen in for Dietta Goush’s family.
Brother, as those who know Nick Saban from his days as quarterback of the 1968 state championship team call him, donated a boxful of items that will be raffled off at Saturday's party.
Dinner at 6 p.m., then the raffle of the football autographed by Nick Saban and wife Terry Constable Saban and all the other items in the Saban giveaway box and music till 9 p.m.
Dave and Luann Raddish of Fairmont are Brogan’s other
grandparents.
Dietta makes jewelry and other items in her
