Frank Ash, Class of 1965, and Carol Ann Lake Ash celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary Saturday, November 28. They live in Barracksville.

Frank posted:

“Fifty one years ago today a short drive to Oakland, Maryland turned into a long happy life. Carol has been a great wife and good mother to our children. Love you, Carol.”

Stephanie Ash-Martin is their daughter. She  lives in Jacksonville Florida.

I took the short drive from Monongah to Oakland to marry Monia Turkette in 1955. We were married 48 years when my Mona Lisa passed away. She’s buried in Cuyahoga Falls’ Northlawn Memorial Gardens with a double grave marker that has “WV” under each of our names.

Mary Moore Puffenbarger Moore moved

CATCHING UP WITH

Mary Ann Pufferbarger Moore

Mary Ann Puffenbarger Moore, Class of 1950, sold the family farm after husband William Richard Moore, a Fairmont East graduate, passed away in 2015 and had “a nice home” built in Pleasant Valley.

Mary Ann and Bill were married for 51 years. Their children are William Richard Moore II of Stephens City, Virginia; Roger A. Moore of West Grove, Pennsylvania; and Cathy Phipps of Pennsylvania. They have two grandchildren, Logan Richard Moore and Savanna Katlyn Moore.

Mary Ann’s new address is:

1719 Lillie Street

Fairmont, WV 26554

Her home phone is (304) 363-2268.

Her cellphone is (304) 657-2106.

Mary Ann gave me the sad news that Barbara “Bobbie” Glover Rombola passed away in October of this year. Mary Ann and Bobbie remained friends through Monongah High and till Bobbie’s passing.

Mary Ann has kept in touch with Rose Commodore Cain and Leatrice Yokay Greaser, both Class of 1950.

Cathy Martin Basagic retires

Cathy Martin Basagic, a Monongah High grad who lives in Monongah with husband Pete Basagic, Class of 1972, has retired as Catering Programs Coordinator at Fairmont State after, she wrote, “29 years, 3 months and 12 days.”

Cathy grew up in Rachel.

Her sister is Cora Fazio, who is married to David Fazio and runs Fazio Eldercare on Stoney Lonesome in Monongah. David is my cousin because his mother, Frances Olesky Fazio, is a sister of my father, John W. Olesky, Sr.

Pete and Cathy were in St. Stanislaus Church, where Pete once was an altar boy, as I was when Father Albert and Father McNulty were the priests.

Pete started at Farmington High but graduated from Monongah High. So did Cathy, who was from Rachel, after Farmington High closed.

The Basagic family ran the beer tavern just across from Consolidation Coal Company’s Champion grocery store, which once was the Frank Lowe Meat Market, and named it the 52/20 Club.

For the youngsters among us, that referred to the GI Bill for World War II veterans that provided $20 a week for 52 weeks for unemployed veterans. It doesn’t sound like much today, but it was more than walking-around money in the late 1940s.

Pete’s father was the late Richard Basagic, Class of 1948, who was a guard on the offensive line for Monongah High football under Coach George Ross.

Sunday, November 8 is the birthday of Richard “Ike” Chickerell, Class of 1970.

Ike lives in Koons Run with wife Laura Stickles Chickerell and is retired from IUOE Local 132 as a heavy equipment operator. He spends his time farming.

Ike and Laura have a son, Isaac, and a grandson, Gunner.

A new addition to the November Lions birthdays list is Sandra Thompson Barton, Class of 1967.

Sandra went to Fairmont Business College before moving to New Jersey in 1979.

Later, she moved to her current residence, in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, famous for Joe Namath, who played football for Beaver Falls High before becoming a legend at the University of Alabama and with the New York Jets in the NFL. And selling, among things hosiery that he models famously.

Sandra ran into Namath at a Beaver Falls restaurant because Broadway Joe still returns to his hometown.
