Clarence William Toll,
Class of 1957, passed away Friday, November 6, 2020, only seven days
before brother Elwood Toll’s birthday.
So I’ll make this Lions
November birthdays article a tribute to Clarence William Toll even though he
was born on June 20, 1939 to Joseph Francis and
Hazel Jane (Selby) Toll. We’ll light a candle in memory of Clarence
along with every Lion roaring about his or her November birthday. I’m
sure Elwood would agree.
Clarence was married to
the late Opal Mae Long Toll. He was among the 9 siblings that included Elwood
Toll, Wanda Carpenter, Mary
Frances Hamilton, Katherine Mitchell, Margaret Toll, James Toll, Joseph Toll
and Homer Toll.
Elwood’s back was
broken in a 2013 auto accident on U.S. 19 in Enterprise that killed his friend,
long-time farmer Paul McCoy.
Fairmont State graduate Elwood lives in
Shinnston.
I saw Elwood in 2010 when he got together with his Class of 1951 graduates and
spouses at Muriales Restaurant in Fairmont. He was with Arlene Marteney Decker
Edgell, Class of 1951; Arlene’s husband, Okey Edgell, Class of 1944; and the
late Kathryn Slamen, Class of 1951.
Okey played football at
Monongah High. His parents were Ray and Lucy Cain Edgell. His siblings
were Lillieray May “Pickle” Edgell Hall, Jeanette J. Edgell Lane, Doak Edgell
and James Edgell.
