Update from Susan Staron Sanders:
31 lights total thanks to our wonderful Mayor and town Council.

Susan Staron Sanders, Class of 1971, is going after 4 more Christmas street lights for Monongah. That would bring the total to 30.

Susan is on the Monongah Town Council these days.

The plan is to put one of the street lights on the street where the late Jenny Shaver’s parents Rick and Gloria Sypult lived. That’s the same street where Sanford Carr, a former Monongah councilman, and Linda Carr, Class of 1967,  had a Christmas street light put up, so there will two on that street.

1989 North Marion grad Jenny Sypult Shaver passed away July 17 after battling her illnesses for years.

Susan and husband Ron Sanders live on Thomas Street.

Susan’s campaign began in 2015 after White Hall donated 7 Christmas street lights that it was replacing to Monongah.

By the time Susan is finished astronauts will need sunglasses when they check out Monongah’s streets during Christmastime.

The Christmas street lights cost $275 or more, depending on the light you choose.
Go to the Mosca Design Web page at https://www.moscadesign.com/  to make your choice.

Evelyn and her husband for 62 years, Okey Boggess, a retired coal miner, lived in the Willow Road home south of Monongah where Evelyn grew up with siblings Bob Kasper, Class of 1950, who has homes in South Lyon and Presque Isle (on Grand Lake), Michigan, and the late Helen Kasper Andrews.

Kathy Boggess Peaslee of Youngstown, Evelyn and Okey’s daughter, provided me with these details:

Calling hours will be 3-7 p.m. Friday, October 4 at Domico Funeral Home in Fairmont.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday, October 5 in Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Monongah, not all that far from the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School that Evelyn attended.

Kathy and Rich Peaslee’s children and Evelyn’s grandchildren are Zachary, who was in the WVU Marching Band while at WVU, and Matthew Peaslee. Evelyn and Okey’s son is John Boggess, who owns the building that once housed the P.P. Shenasky Grocery on U.S. 19 adjacent to where Thoburn School once stood.

Ursula Shipco had six lots which wound up mostly with her children John, Joe, George, Walter, Blanche and Caroline Kasper, Evelyn’s mother.

Evelyn’s obituary:

Evelyn Eileen Kasper Boggess, 84, of Monongah, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2019 at her residence.  She was born February 22, 1935 in Fairmont, daughter of the late Lawrence and Caroline Kasper.

Evelyn was a graduate of Monongah High School.  She was previously employed by G.C. Murphy Company, Thorofare, and Westinghouse.  She married her husband Okey September 01, 1956 in Monongah at St. Stanislaus.

Evelyn enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting, reading.  Most of all she enjoyed time with her grandchildren, whether it was babysitting or attending all of their events; baseball and basketball games, and concerts.  Her cooking and baking skills were a delight to all who were lucky enough to enjoy them.

She was a devout Catholic and prayed the rosary daily, along with her many daily prayers for friends and family.  She has a special devotion to St. Jude.

Evelyn is survived by her husband of 63 years, Otis “Okey” Boggess; three children, Kathy Peaslee and husband Rick of Youngstown, OH, John Boggess and wife Sue of Monongah, WV and Tish Boggess of Fairmont, WV; four grandchildren, Matthew Peaslee and wife Erin, Zachary Peaslee, Andrew Boggess and Jacob Boggess; a brother, Robert “Bob” Kasper; a special cousin, Sharon Sokolosky; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews; a special caregiver and friend, Pauline Monell; and  special neighbors, Frank and Cathy Boyce.

In addition to her parents, Evelyn is preceded in death by a sister, Helen Kasper Andrews.

In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to Holy Spirit Catholic Church (687 Maple Terrace Monongah, WV 26554) and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105).

Brother never forgets his friends.

Alabama football coach Nick Saban and wife Terry established the Kerry Marbury Memorial Scholarship at Fairmont State for students from Marion County attending Fairmont State who have financial need.

Brother said:

“The older we get, the clearer it becomes that true friendships go beyond distance and time and circumstances. If one has but a few true friends, then indeed, that is the richest treasure of all.  Kerry Marbury was a friend from childhood who was like a member of my family.

“We hope that this scholarship will help other local young adults continue their education to positively impact their lives and that it will honor Kerry Marbury's name.”

Marbury died from cancer June 23 at his home in Fairmont. Brother and Kerry were teammates for Monongah High’s state title in 1968. Brother was the quarterback and Kerry the elusive and speedy running back. After Brother graduated and played for Kent State, Marbury also was on the 1969 Monongah High state championship football team.

Kerry rushed for more than 6,000 yards as a Lion. He also played basketball and finished strong at the state track meets for Monongah.

Kerry played football for WVU from 1971-1972 and was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1976, but left football by the age of 24.

After getting his bachelor’s degree from Fairmont State, he later became a professor on the Fairmont State faculty.

Brother got his penchant for helping others from his father, Nick Saban, Sr.

A half-century ago, Brother checked out his dad’s five garages tucked behind old houses on a stretch of Miner's Row. They were packed to the ceiling with what appeared to be useless throwaways.

"I walk in those garages and there's tags on junk everywhere," Saban said in an old article. "An old bald tire had a tag that read, 'Bob Moore, $5.' That thing wasn't worth a nickel. He was taking people's junk and giving them money to survive."

No one knew about the garages and what his father had stored in them till Brother checked them out after dad passed away.

Nick Saban Sr.'s Gulf service station at State Road 218 and U.S. 19 was an ATM for people in need who were too proud to take charity. So that was Nick, Sr.’s ploy, cash for junk.

Dad also bought an old bus, the equipment and uniforms, the cleats and balls and paid for travel and food for his Pop Warner children’s football team. If a player didn’t have football or baseball equipment, Nick, Sr. provided it for his teams.

Brother sends a check every year for maintenance of the Nick Saban, Sr. Field where children still play today.

Alabama knows Brother as the chapionship coach who won six national titles and is an equal to another Alabama coaching legend, Paul “Bear” Bryant.

Monongah High alumni knew the Sabans – father and son – were champions long before Brother showed up in Tuscaloosa.

Judy Renaldo, a pediatric nurse at Fairmont Regional Medical Center in Fairmont for many years, passed away August 31 in Midlothian, Virginia but her obituary wasn’t published till September 21. Woody Funeral Home Huguenot Chapel in Midlothian handled her arrangements.

Judy’s brother, 1983 WVU Med School graduate Dr. Gary J. Renaldo, is a cardiology specialist in Kernersville, North Carolina.

Judy’s mother was Rose Domico Renaldo, Class of 1942. Her father was Joseph Renaldo.

Adam Michna, who graduated from North Marion in 1980 after attending Monongah High for 3 years, posted this:

Judy was the daughter of Joseph and Rose Domico Renaldo. She lived with her parents and brother in an apartment complex owned by her parents at the intersection of East Park and Morgantown Avenue.

Judy is survived by her brother, Dr. Gary Renaldo, and one uncle, Chester Damico and his daughter, Trudy Anderson.

She was preceded in death by several aunts and uncles, Jack Domico, Florence Damico, Mary Diamond, and several relatives. Judy was the grand-daughter of Antonio "Tony" and Mary Manzo D'Amico of Wahoo, near Monongah.

Judy’s obituary:

Judy Renaldo, 66, a long-time resident of Fairmont, passed away on August 31, 2019 at Brookdale Memory Care in Midlothian, Virginia. She had a great love for children and served many years as a pediatric nurse at Fairmont General Hospital. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, a niece and nephew, and many other relatives and friends, who will remember her caring nature. Donations may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or The Multiple System Atrophy Coalition.

Sandy Skormisley wrote:

“Judy and l were traveling buddies. We went together to Italy (two times) with many friends and two times to Myrtle Beach. Flea markets, garage and yard sales -- a Saturday must. A Church picnic, spaghetti dinners, Fall Festivals, Christmas bazaars, friends meeting at my home to feast on goodies and decorate the Christmas tree allowed Judy to meet new friends.

“She was a pleasure to all. The time at Myrtle when l restyled her hair, added blush to her already lovely skin, a little light lipstick, she saw how pretty she looked. Oh, could she make a mean carrot cake. BEST ever.

“When we traveled, we always said the Rosary at the end of our day. I will miss her terribly. Life dealt her a harsh blow. She will be my angel in Heaven. Rest in peace, little lady.”

Maylisa Yofan wrote:

“My cousin Judy Ann shines from within. When I see Judy, I see her Dad, my Uncle Joe. His smile and greeting ‘Hey, Sissy’ is a snapshot memory. His absolute endearing expression always made me feel so loved. Like father, like daughter.

“Judy and I were drawn to reminiscing often in our telephone chats. Most likely, our conversations had us both shedding tears. What a terrific feeling of acceptance and closeness one experiences when one can cry unabashedly with another. The wordless sob says ‘I know from where you come and I am there as well.’

“Holding her mother in her arms as she was dying, after being her mom's closest companion and caregiver for life, is the route I would have taken had I a chance to live my life again. Difference is you would have heard me complain now and then. My cousin, however, never, ever breathed an utterance of complaint while sharing her life with her mom, my Aunt Rose.

“In His House, there are many mansions. Surely, when my earthly life shall end, St. Peter will lead me to my mansion. And soon enough, I will hear Judy call out excitedly ‘Up here, Maylisa! Look up!’ And that is where I'll find her, up there in the reserved seat section looking down on the rest of us.”

Melanie Dooley wrote:

“My dear cousin Judy spent her career as a pediatric nurse at Fairmont Regional Medical Center in Fairmont.
She was devoted to her mother Rose, who was widowed for many years. She was a loyal parishioner of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fairmont. Among the highlights of her life were the two trips she took to Italy, the birthplace of her grandparents.

“She enjoyed being with family and friends, shopping, and caring for her home. She was kind and generous to all.
She was loved by her cousins Melanie, Maylisa, Dan, Randy and Becky; and by her sister-in-law Sandi.

“She will be missed.”

Goldie Huffman Basagic, Class of 1974, and husband John Huffman are celebrating their 44th wedding anniversary.

Goldie posted:
“We been married 44 years, had 2 children and 8 grandchildren with another on the way next month and we are still smiling. Who would of thought? Love you, John. Happy Anniversary.”

Patti is a retired nurse (1987-2006) and a graduate of Fairmont State. She lives in Fairmont with husband Brian Evans. Patti’s sister is BettyAnne DeMary.

Keeping the Basagic family branches straight is tougher than beating Monongah High in a state title football game, but I’ll try:

Pete Basagic, Class of 1972, son of Richard Basagic, Class of 1948, who worked at Davis Electric, lives in Monongah and is married.

Richard “Richie” Basagic, Class of 1975, works at FirstEnergy and lives in Fairmont. He attended the 2010 Monongah High Alumni Reunion.

There also are a lot of members of the Woods (with an "s") family who graduated from Monongah High. I won’t get into that because it will confuse both you and me.
