TWIN MEMORIAL AND MEMORY LANE FOR DUANE HARBERT

Duane Harbert, Class of 1951, took a winsome trip down memory lane from his Marlton, New Jersey home to West Virginia.

Well, I’ll let Duane tell you in his own words:

Good afternoon,

This past Sunday, June 27th, we had a a memorial service in Parsons, West Virginia for Mary and my son Tom.  Had a really nice turnout.

The next day two other couples (friends from New Jersey) went with me on a nostalgia trip to Marion and Harrison counties. Some things looked different and others looked the same. I introduced them to WV style hotdogs, crooked and narrow roads and WV hospitality.

We had dinner at Say-Boys (at their new location) with Okie and Arlene Edgell and  Eugene  (Buck) and Joanne Blagg. Had a great time.

After dinner we went to Arlene's house for dessert and to see some of the work she and Okie do with their embroidery and quilting machines. They have produced some incredible pieces of art. The photographer was really interested in the work they do because she is also into quilting, sewing and many other crafts.

It was an emotional trip but it really brought back a alot of good memories.

Duane

Son Tommy passed away in 2014 at the age of 51 after a 3-year battle with bladder cancer. That had to be tough to deal with.

Duane’s wife, Mary Donham Harbert, passed away in 2019.

Duane was part of the facetiously named Gang That Terrorized Marion County (we were rascals but not a terror in our teens) which include Bob “Satch” Kasper, Class of 1950, my friend for 83 years who lives in South Lyon, Michigan; Tony Eates, also Classof 1950, who lives in Fairmont with wife Lucy Cann Eates; Frank “Bruno” Franze, also Class of 1950, who lives in Slidell, Louisiana after out-loving two wives; retired West Virginia Highway Patrol Officer Steven “Bucky” Satterfield, Class of 1950, who lives in St. Albans; the late Lawrence “Sonny” Godby, also Class of 1950 (seeing a pattern here?); Donald Jake Halpenny, yep Class of 1950, who lives in Fairmont; and, all deceased, Ronnie “Cooley” Delovich, Anthony “Plumber” DeMary, Class of 1950 (of course), Joe Manzo, who survived combat in Korea; and Jim “Judge” Starcher, another Class of 1950.

Our most famous exploit was swimming in the Fairmont Field Club pool at 3 a.m. It was obvious when the police showed up that the country club help didn’t appreciate it. I walked home barefoot without my shoes but, when I woke up, my father stood there with my shoes and an unhappy scowl on his face (I did that a lot to him in those day). Marion County Deputy Sheloskie, father of my sister Jackie’s friend Lorain, brought the shoes to our Church Street home.

While everyone made a break for it the car that Duane drove didn’t and it was owned by Duane’s father, Thoburn principal Frank Harbert. Cops checked the car license plate, found out he it belonged to and everyone there was nailed to the wall.

We were brought into the Considation Coal Company office in Fairmont, given a “Scared Straight” treatment (long before it became popularized nationally), and turned over to our fuming parents.

It came under the category of “boys will be boys.” At least there were no girls involved.

Duane’s mother, Goldie, taught at Worthington Grade School.

Duane’s brother, John Harbert, Class of 1955, and his wife, Karen Colvin, also Class of 1955, are deceased.

James M. Harbert of Taylor, Pennsyvania and David L. Harbert of Stratford, New Jersey are Duane’s other sons.

TIME RUNNING LOW TO GET YOUR RESERVATION IN FOR THE FUN !!!

There will be plenty of Olesky and Fazio cousins at the July 17 J&J&Lions Get-Together in the Monongah Town Hall.

Co-hosts Jackie Olesky Straight, Class of 1955, who lives in Rivesville, and her brother, John Olesky, Class of 1950, who lives in Tallmadge, Ohio, of course.

But also cousin David Fazio, Class of 1975, and wife Cora Fazio, who does such a great job operating her facility in Stoney Lonesome for the elderly.

And Mary Chris Ramsey and husband Tom Ramsey, who also live in Monongah. Mary Chris once worked at the bank on Walnut Street at Camden Avenue.

I was born in my Olesky grandparents’ home on Walnut, at the Pike Street intersection, during the Great Depress (I wasn’t “great” in my childhood memories).

Then there are second cousins like my niece Lea Ann Straight Barnes and her husband John Barnes, my daughter Monnie Ann Olesky Johnston and her husband Bob Johston of Brunswick, Ohio (they live across the street from former WVU and Cleveland Browns player John Talley), Belinda Straight Morris and husband Dave Morris, my son John Larry Olesky of Tallmadge, Ohio, my chauffeur and heavy lifter (including the 25-pound blue and gold cement outline of West Virginia that I’m picking up from May Brothers in Fairmont), and Rene Straight, Jackie’s daughter.

I’ve learned over the years that nearly everyone in Monongah is connected by blood or marriage anyway.

Besides the slew of cousins, there will be friends, Monongah High alumni, residents of Monongah and family showing up for the 6 p.m. dinner and music for listening and dancing till 9 p.m.

You’re running low on time to make your reservations. At this late stage the only way to get in on the fun is to call Jackie Olesky Straight at (304) 278-7157 and she’ll give you directions to her Rivesville home.

Co-host Jackie has Reservation forms for you to fill out. Then you give Jackie $20 for each person attending (CASH ONLY AT THIS LATE DATE; NO CHECKS).

And prepare to have the most fun since the pandemic hit.

Mayor Johnboy Palmer will draw the winning raffle ticket for the football autographed by Nick Saban, Alabama super coach, and his wife Ms. Terry Constable Saban.

Additional tickets will be drawn for the boxful of items that Brother sent to me until every Saban-provided article is gone. The money will go to the Monongah High Alumni Association scholarship fund.

The only way to buy a raffle ticket is to first make a Reservation and pay $20 for the dinner and music. No one will be allowed into the Monongah Town Hall without being on the advance Reservations list. And the raffle tickets will be sold only inside the Town Hall.

Councilwoman Susan Sanders and Shelly Yankie are handling the black and red streamers (Monongah High colors) and other decorations.

I am providing a 28 x 36 framed photo of the Monongah High Lion, a 15 x 20 foot WVU cloth wall hanging, a photo frame with 1,400 revolving photos including Monongah High Alumni Banquet pictures from earlier years and 72 songs of continuous music coming over a speaker, including “Country Roads.”

So, what are you waiting for? Call Jackie and join the fun. Even if you’re not my cousin. You’re Monongah and that’s close enough for me.

I can’t wait for the event to start Saturday, July 17.

CATHERINE ELIZABETH FIELD PASSES AWAY

Catherine Elizabeth Field, who spent much of her life helping the ill and the infirm at St. Barbara’s Memorial Nursing Home near Monongah and John Manchin Hospital, passed away Saturday, June 26.

Her daughter, 1984 North Marion graduate Teena Field Ailstock, part of Councilman Susan Sanders’ Christmas Street Lights committee, posted:

My mom has passed on to glory. I know that she is with Myles and my sister Patty, her mom and grandma . . .  I know that she is enjoying her forever with those who have gone before. We are broken-hearted but I know the angels are rejoicing.”

Teena lives in Monongah with husband David Ailstock.

Catherine’s obituary:

Catherine Elizabeth Field, born November 29, 1939, made her heavenly journey on June 26, 2021.

She was employed by St. Barbara’s Nursing Home and retired from John Manchin Hospital.

She leaves behind her grieving family of five children, nine grandchildren, and many very loved great grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Karen Jackson of Carolina, Don (Wendy) Field, of Barrackville, Dale (Debbie) Field of Hallack Road, Judy (John) Dalton of Benton’s Ferry, and Teena (Dave) Ailstock of Monongah.

She was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings, her baby daughter, Patricia Field and her grandson, Myles O’Dell.

Catherine was a loved believer of God and attended Sunrise Chapel.

She loved to read, crochet, jigsaw puzzles, HGTV, and Food Network. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.

Heaven gained an angel and her family is sure that heaven was loud with a reunion when she arrived. She will be missed until we meet her there.

The family will receive friends at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Avenue in Fairmont, on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 from 12:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The funeral will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor John Snyder officiating. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.domicofh.com .

IF YOU WAIT MUCH LONGER IT WILL BE TOO LATE

What are you waiting for?

Be there or be square!

Here are some of the name tags for the 6-9 p.m. Saturday, July 17 J&J&Lions Get-Together in the Monongah Town Hall for family, friends, Monongah High alumni, Monongah residents, including Mayor Johnboy Palmer who will draw the winning raffle ticket for the Alabama football autographed by Nick Saban, Class of 1969, the #1 college coach in American history, and his wife, Terry Constable Saban.

Not in the photo because I’m still hand-working the name tags, which have taken me days and days and hours and hours because I’m skilled in such a task like Susan Sanders is Monongah firefighter Jim Birdsell, whose Reservation came in after I put together these name tags (don’t worry, Jim, you’re have a name tag).

If you want your name attached to one of these metallic suckers that clack together like mad lovers then you have some time left to call co-host Jackie Olesky Straight, who lives in Rivesville, at (304) 278-7157. Jackie will give you directions to her house. She has Reservation forms that you will fill out at Jackie’s house and give her $20 per person (CASH ONLY    at this late date) with your entrĂ©e preference from Say-Boy, which will be catering the yummy event.

The Town Hall holds 300 so there’s plenty of room left for you. But if you too long, then you’ll just read about the nostalgia, laughter, dancing, food and music that you missed on this blog. With photos of people having fun that you’ll miss if you don’t call Jackie within days to become part of the post-pandemic fun crowd.

I look forward to seeing you and dozens of other friends and neighbors from my blessed childhood in Monongah on Walnut, Thomas and Church Streets. Mom and dad keep moving me and Jackie from house to house as their financial situation improved from the Great Depression which, I can tell you first-hand, was not so great.

METALLIC NAME TAGS FOR JULY 17 EVENT IN MONONGAH TOWN HALL ... NO HOLES IN CLOTHING

I’m preparing metallic name tags for everyone who attends my J&J&Lions Get-Together at 6-9 p.m. Saturday, July 17 in the Monongah Town Hall.

That will avoid pinholes on clothing.

Dinner at 6 p.m., music for listening and dancing till 9 p.m.

Time is running out to get your Reservations in. The only way, at this late date, is to call co-host Jackie Olesky Straight, Class of 1955, who lives in Rivesville. Jackie will give you directions to her home where you can fill out Registration forms that she has and pay the $20 per person IN CASH ONLY because it’s took late to accept checks.

Many of your friends, former Monongah High classmates and residents of Monongah are on the Reservations list. Don’t miss out and kick yourself later when you see photos of how much fun we had.

A reminder to avoid ANY confusion:

This is NOT – I repeat, NOT -- the annual Monongah High Alumni banquet but a John Olesky attempt to get family and classmates together during the summer as a break from the COVID restrictions.

The annual Monongah High Alumni Banquet will be on Labor Day weekend at the Knights of Columbus in Fairmont. If you have any questions call Monongah Alumni Association treasurer Donna Davis at 304-534-5636. By the way, Donna is among those who will be in the Monongah Town Hall on July 17.

VISIT JACKIE AND SET YOURSELF UP FOR A NIGHT OF FUN ON JULY 17 !!!

Jackie’s house became a popular place to visit

My sister, Jackie Olesky Straight, Class of 1950, who lives in Rivesville, is getting a lot of company these days.

They are showing up to fill out their Reservation forms for the Saturday, July 17 J&J&Lions Get-Together in the Monongah Town Hall for the dinner at 6 p.m., music till 9 p.m. and the raffle drawing of the football signed by Alabama Coach Nick Saban, Class of 1969, and his wife, Ms. Terry (Constable Saban) and a boxful of other souvenirs.

Only those with Reservations who come into the Town Hall can buy raffle tickets for Brother’s collection of memorabilia.

YOU are running low on time to be in on the fun.

Too late to mail in a Reservation to me but still time for you to call co-host Jackie at (304) 278-7157.

Jackie will give you directions to her house and has Reservation forms for you to fill. At this late date you can pay Jackie ONLY IN CASH (too late for checks) at $20 per person. If you are a Monongah High graduate, put your graduation year on the form.

Again, NOT restricted to Monongah High alumni!

Residents of Monongah or friends and family to those who are coming, too, are welcome as long as they have had their Covid vaccine shots.

I will need to give Say-Boy Restaurant the number of people attending and how many want the various entrees. I will be paying for all the food in advance from the checks I’ve received so that Say-Boy doesn't have to collect person to person.

There will be non-stop music for 3 hours, a huge Monongah High Lion framed poster, an even larger 10 x 15 foot WVU cloth wall-hanging, a 25-pound cement outline of the state of West Virginia in blue and gold with “W” and “V” on the work of art and FOURTEEN HUNDRED ROTATING PHOTOS in a picture frame of family, friends, Monongah High alumni, Monongah High Alumni Banquet photos from previous years and residents of Monongah from 2021 to 1938.

A fantastic non-stop stroll down memory lane in so many ways.

So call Jackie to get your reservation in and not be kicking yourself later when you read about and see photos of how much fun we’ll be having.

Monongah Mayor Johnboy Palmer will be there, too, to draw the winning raffle ticket for the donated football that Nick Saban and wife Terry Constable Saban autographed.

Brother sent a boxful of items that will be given away to those with winning raffle tickets till everything on the table is gone.

This is NOT the annual Monongah High Alumni banquet but a John Olesky attempt to get family, friends and classmates together during the summer as a break from the COVID restrictions.

1938 TO 1982 GRADUATES TO BE AT JULY 17 J&J&LIONS GET-TOGETHER

Plenty of class at July 17 Town Hall get-together

There will be a wide range of Monongah High alumni at the July 17 J&J&Lions Get-Together in the Monongah Town Hall.

It’s not just for MHS Lions, however. Anyone can attend if they have a Reservation IN ADVANCE.

But the Reservations include those from:

Class of 1938 (Amelia Shenasky Zentz)

Class of 1942

Class of 1950

Class of 1955

Class of 1958

Class of 1961

Class of 1968

Class of 1969

Class of 1972

Class of 1975

Class of 1982 (North Marion; Monongah High’s last graduation class was in 1979 before merging into North Marion with other Marion County schools).

Wow, that’s a lot of class!

44 years from the earliest graduate that will show up for the 6 p.m. dinner and music for listening and dancing till 9 p.m. to the “baby” of the group in Shelly Yankie, 1982 North Marion graduate, Monongah Christmas Street Lights Committee and, along with Monongah Councilwoman Susan Sanders, decorating the Town Hall in black and red streamers (Monongah High’s colors).

YOU are running low on time to be in on the fun.

LARGE WVU WALLHANGING THAT WILL BE ON DISPLAY JULY 17 AT MONONGAH TOWN HALL

These are my magic elves installing the 6 x 8 foot WVU wallhanging that I will be bringing to the July 17 J&J&Lions Get-Together in the Monongah Town Hall.

It’s my daughter LaQuita and her husband, Tom.

The wallhanging will be joined by the 28 x 36 inch framed Monongah High Lion photo and the 25-pound outline of the state of West Virginia painted in blue (with a white “W”) on the western half and yellow (with a blue “V”) on the eastern half.

The imaginary line where the blue meets the yellow will go through Morgantown, Charleston and Williamson, the first 3 towns where I made my first newspaper stops as a sportswriter before moving to the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News, the St. Petersburg (Florida) Times and the Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal for the rest of my 43-year career, about 30 years as an editor teaching new reporters who old editors taught me.

The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. with music for listening and dancing till 9 p.m.

It’s too late to mail me a Registration form but not too late, if you hurry, to call the co-host, my sister Jackie Olesky Straight, Class of 1955, at (304) 278-7157, and she will give you directions to her Rivesville home.

Because you waited so long, Jackie will give you the Registration form to fill out at her house, and then you will pay Jackie IN CASH ONLY because it’s too late to avoid bounced checks.

Jackie will phone me with your names, your Monongah High graduation years (if you went there; not necessary to attend the event) and your choice of entrees.

In a little more than a week I have to tell Say-Boy how many mouths to feed, and how many of each entrees the mouths want.

I will pre-pay for all the food in advance so that Say-Boy can’t be stiffed from the $20 per person that I get. If I make a “profit” after aqll my 3 months of expenses I will turn every penny of it into the Monongah High Alumni Association scholarship fund. If I lose money, I’m OK with that.

Only for those who make Reservations there will be raffle tickets available for the memorabilia that Alabama Coach Nick Saban, Class of 1969, sent to me in a large box, including a football autographed by Brother and his wife, Ms. Terry (Constable Saban).

Once someone wins the football then we will keep drawing numbers and let the winners come to the table and have their choice of items that Brother graciously sent to me.

So, no more time for procrastination. IF you have had your COVID     vaccine shots, then call Jackie and fill out your Reservation form.

NO ONE will be admitted into the Monongah Town Hall without Registering in advance! We want this to be a fun and safe time.

Last-minute show-ups will NOT be admitted.

The more money we raise for the scholarship fund the happier I will be. And the more people who laugh and smile on July 17 in the Monongah Town Hall the more delighted I will be.

We deserve this after surviving the pandemic.

This is NOT the annual Monongah High Alumni banquet but a John Olesky attempt to get family and classmates together during the summer as a break from the COVID restrictions.

ARE YOU GOING TO MISS THE BEST PARTY OF THE YEAR SO FAR?

Guess who’s coming to dinner July 17?

Mayor Johnboy Palmer will be there.

We’ll ask him to draw the raffle ticket to determine who gets the Alabama football autographed by Nick Saban, Class of 1969, quarterback of the 1968 Monongah High state championship team and the only coach in history to win SEVEN national college football titles, and his wife, Ms. Terry (Terry Constable Saban).

Money from the raffle will go into the Monongah High Alumni Association scholarship fund.

Councilwoman Susan Staron Sanders, Class of 1971, also will be there.

So will Shellie Yankie, of the Monongah Christmas Lights Committee.

And Donna Davis, Class of 1961, Monongah High Alumni Association treasurer from the time that dinosaurs roamed those hills, those beautiful West Virginia hills.

And of course the Fazio cousins of J&J&Lions Get-Together co-hosts Jackie Olesky Straight, Class of 1955, who lives in Rivesville, and John Olesky, Class of 1950, who lives in Tallmadge, Ohio, adjacent to Akron.

And Kathern Herndon Loss, Class of 1942, who may be the only one there older than me (I’m 88).

So why haven’t you sent in your Reservations form yet? I’ll extend the deadline past June 26 as long as you notify me via my John Olesky Facebook page or my jo4wvu@neo.rr.com email address that the form and the check are on the way.

Be there or be square.

If you can’t make it then you’ll be able to read about it on this blog, with photos, later.

There will be a 28 x 36 inch framed photo of the Monongah High Lion on display and a 15 x 20 foot cloth WVU hanging plus all of the memorabilia that Brother (Nick Saban) packed into a box and mailed to me that will be given to those whose tickets are drawn at the Get-Together.

Dinner at 6 p.m. and music till 9 p.m.

Rotating photos in a frame (1,400 of them) of Monongah High alumni, residents of Monongah, MHS Reunions over the years, from Black Diamond yearbooks, anything I could find anywhere that might interest people who attend.

This may be a party to remember for the ages. You sure you want to sit at home and miss it?
