Her name is Josephine Popovich Jones, but everyone knows her as Joey Jones.

Joey, Class of 1952, and Sherwood Jones will celebrate their 63^rd wedding anniversary on Tuesday, July 31. They are Hutchinson’s happy longevity couple.

Their children are Ron Jones, who also graduated from Monongah High, and Vanessa Jones Rodriguez, who graduated from North Marion. Joey and Sherwood have 4 grandchildren: Erik Jones, Kylie Jones and Cory Jones, all North Marion graduates, and  Aubrey Rodriguez, a 5-year-old who is Vanessa’s daughter.

Joey has worked at the Tygart Center as Personal Clothing Laundry Aide and at the Wishing Well.

Tom Hulderman, Class of 1969, Monongah High quarterback Nick Saban’s favorite receiver on the 1968 undefeated state championship football team and earlier on the Idamay Black Diamonds Pop Warner youth team coached by Brother’s father, Nick, Sr., passed away Saturday, July 28.

The 1968 team won by an average of 41 points during the regular season and won the title game, 21-12, against Paden City. Monongah defeated Paden City again, 26-0, for the 1969 state championship.

Brother’s sister, who gave him the “Brother” nickname, is Diana “Dene” Saban Thompson, a Monongah Elementary teacher.

Tom and Brother would practice their timing on the Idamay field for an hour after the team’s workout was over.

Today, Brother is the University of Alabama coach with six national football titles, including one at Louisiana State University.

Twice a year Tom went to Mount Calvary Cemetery to visit Nick, Sr.’s grave to clean the headstone and place flowers in front of the black granite stone that reads: “No man stands as tall as when he stoops to help a child.”

Now Tom and Nick, Sr. are together again. Nick, Sr. had a fatal heart attack while jogging home one evening.

Tom also was an excellent baseball player and was in the Chicago Cubs organization.

Tom had two children with the late Mary Frances Michalski Hulderman Gapen, daughter of Monongah High alumni Frank Michalski and Ramona Fullen Michalski: Tammy Hulderman Weintraub, married to Jacob Weintraub and living in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Tracy Hulderman Eye, living in Morgantown with husband Josh Eye.

Tom later married Georganne Shaw, who later became Georganne Deitzel.

 Mary Frances passed away after a career as a teacher in Barrackville schools. She was married to Rick Gapen. They lived in Barrackville.

Tom’s mother was the late Olive Jane Kniceley Hulderman. His siblings are Sylvia Ann Hulderman Edwards, Class of 1967, the widow of Eddie Edwards who lives in Fairmont; Raymond "Bugs" Hulderman, Class of 1966, married to Lorraine Snider Hulderman, Class of 1966, who live on Swisher Hill; and Don Pitman, Class of 1962, who lives in White Hall with his wife, Jane.

Harold Dean Kniceley, Class of 1960, who had an excellent career as a fine arts teacher in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland in Centreville, is related to Tom. Tom’s mother, Olive Jane, was Harold’s first cousin. Harold married Sandra Kay Miller. Mike Hess, Class of 1975, attended Tom’s funeral and gave this report: “Tom had several family, friends, football teammates, alumni there. “Kerry Marbury spoke and had many good things to say about Tom and his other teammates. Kerry also read a very nice letter from Nick Saban. Nick very much wanted to be there but was not able to attend. “Tom’s cousin Diane also spoke and had many good things to say of Tom and about his final days. She also spoke highly of friends Rocky Manchin and Scott Booth that had helped in Tom’s care. “Tom was a loving person and was not ashamed to tell any of his friends that he loved you. Anyone that knew Tom can tell you that. RIP, Tommy!” Tom’s obituary: Thomas Lynn "Tommy" Hulderman, 68, of Fairmont, died Saturday (July 28, 2018) at the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He was born Dec. 1, 1950 in Fairmont, a son of the late Raymond Otto Hulderman and Olive "Jane" Kniceley Hulderman. Tommy was a former coal miner, having last worked at Consolidation Coal Co.'s Loveridge Mine. He was a graduate of Monongah High School and was a well-known local athlete who played baseball for the Chicago Cubs Organization. He had many friends and was involved in various other activities through the years. He also attended Calvary Temple Assembly of God. Survivors include his brothers, Don (Joan) Pitman, Whitehall, and Raymond "Bugs" (Lorraine) Hulderman, Swisher Hill; a sister, Sylvia Edwards, Fairmont; a niece, Lisa Matter; nephews, Mark Hulderman, Gary Hulderman and Tim Fitzwater; several additional nieces and nephews, and many cousins. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law: Eddie Edwards; and a nephew, Matt Fitzwater. Dustin Posten passes away

Dustin Ray Carpenter, son of Town of Monongah employee Brian Posten and his wife Lori Lynn Hinerman Posten, passed away.

Plans are being formulated for a memorial in the Hutchinson Community Building. Kim McIntire Frame's Facebook page is the contact point for that.

Brian and Lori live in Worthington. They were married in 1997.

Lori’s grandmother was the late Bertha Olive Hinerman of Monongah, whose children were Philip Hinerman of Farmington and Christine Barrack of Shinnston.

Brian is a North Marion graduate.

Dustin Ray Carpenter, 22, of Worthington passed away on Friday, July 27, 2018 at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born March 7, 1996 in Fairmont. He is the son of Brian and Lori Posten of Worthington, Ernie Carpenter of Wyoming, and the late Richard McIntire.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Laura Ringer of Worthington; his paternal grandparents, Patricia Carpenter of Fairmont; Russell and Linda McIntire of Bingamon; and Karen Boyce of Monongah. Also surviving are his brothers, Austin T. Carpenter of Worthington; Caleb Lee of Fairmont; Matt McIntire of Worthington; and James McIntire of Wallace; as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved him.

He was also preceded in death by his maternal grandfathers, James W. Hinerman and Melvin L. Ringer; and his paternal grandfather, Ernest Carpenter.

Dustin enjoyed fishing, hunting, music, and hanging with his friends.

The family will receive friends at Perine Funeral Home, 1348 S. Pike St. Shinnston, on Tuesday from 2-8pm. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, August 1st at 11:00 AM with Pastor Sabrina Haught officiating. Interment will follow at the Shinnston Memorial Cemetery. Doris Carpenter Rogers, Class of 1971, and Scott Rogers, Class of 1973 and known as Earl at Monongah High,  celebrated their 43^rd wedding anniversary lakeside at Stonewall Resort State Park in Roanoke, West Virginia.

That’s near Buckhannon.

West Virginia Weslayan graduate Doris and Beckley College graduate Scott live in Charleston.

Josh Rogers, their son, is married to Amanda Wray Rogers.

Doris’ parents were Iris Deloris Martin Carpenter, Class of 1950, and Bill Carpenter. Her siblings are Will Carpenter and Amy Carpenter.

Bill Meredith, Class of 1957, and wife Roleta have their fourth great-grandchild, Evan Jacob Breidenbach.

Evan’s parents are Tiffany, Bill and Roleta’s granddaughter, and Justin.

Evan was born Tuesday at OSU Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Justin and Mason are is brothers.

Paul Eugene “Bucko” Lambert, Class of 1973, and Vivian Pierce Lambert, Class of 1978, are celebrating their 36^th wedding anniversary.

Vivian’s parents were Betty Melinda Collins Pierce and James Pierce, who were married for 55 years.

Vivian is a former Union Carbide inspector and Fairmont State graduate. Paul is a 1978 Fairmont State graduate.

Vivian explained:

“Paul and I lived by each other for years on Main Street in Monongah. I went to school with his sisters, Donna Lambert and Barbara Lambert.”

Vivian and Paul got together in 1980. Two years later, they were married.

Mary D. Fortney Lambert and Samuel Lambert were the parents of the late Robert Lee Fortney, whose widow, Fairmont East graduate Diane Mercer Fortney, lives in Monongah.

Suncrest mall on former tribal burial site

Suncrest Town Centre, a Granville mall with more than 80 stores that borders Morgantown, sits on a former Monongahela tribe sacred burial ground.

The excavated remains were given to members of the Seneca tribe in New York, the Monongahela tribe’s  traditional enemy.

Morgantown resident Sylvia Straight donated the land to West Virginia University years ago, to be used as an archaeological site.

More than 10 years ago, Wal-Mart wanted to build a $15 million mega-store on the land but backed out of the deal when Wal-Mart learned it was an ancient Native American burial ground.

WVU sold the land for $1.55 million in 2001 to CMC Company, owned by David and Richard Biafora.

In 2003 the Biaforas sold the land to Gateway Towne Centre, which also acquired adjoining land for $1.73 million.

Gateway excavated the Monongahela tribe’s remains and shipped them to the Senaca tribe.

Manchin uses Heimlich on choking Senator McCaskill

I don’t know how I missed it because it happened June 28, but Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) used the Heimlich maneuver on Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) at a luncheon with Senate Democrats after she started choking, resulting in McCaskill getting a cracked rib.

"She started choking. People cough, you think, well. And then started getting real red. 'I can't breathe, I can't breathe,' " Manchin said.

"I was big enough and tall enough to get some leverage on her and pick her up off her feet. I kept jerking and jerking and jerking until she said, 'You're hurting me now.' "

He continued: "I knew she could breathe then. I just go underneath her breastplate and give it all I had. ... We were all just so thankful. It was all so scary. You can't imagine."

McCaskill continued her reelection campaign despite the rib injury.

She is the first female Senator voted into office from Missouri. Jean Carnahan was appointed after her husband passed away and served only one year.

Senator McCaskill’s mother, Betty Anne Ward Caskill, was the first woman elected to the Columbia, Missouri City Council.

Milton Hurley, married since 1983 to Debbie Weaver Hurley, Class of 1979, retired after 40 years as a coal miner.

Debbie wrote:

“Well, today is a big day for us. My husband has retired from the coal mines after 40 years and 13 days of working underground!!

“The last 3.5 years he worked as a Longwall Production supervisor and actually being away from the house 16 hours a day. HHHe has earned a much-deserved rest, that is for sure.

“I thank God for keeping him safe over these past 40 years and I'm excited to see what adventures life holds for us now. Most importantly God and Family are high on our list.”

Milton is a 1977 Fairview graduate and was a longwall face supervisor at ERP Fuel Federal Mining Complex. Debbie is a Fairmont State grad.  North Marion grads Chase Hurley and Shane Hurley are their sons.

Debbie and Kim DeMary Clowers, Class of 1979, who lives in Red Bank, Tennessee with husband Earl Lee Clowers, have been best friends since they were 4 years old.

Milton was a long-time friend with the late Charles Devaughn “Butch” Sabala, Class of 1973, who worked at Patriot Coal and lived in Monongah, where he grew up.

Kim is a daughter of Joe DeMary and Laurelle “Lou” Costello Hustead. Her siblings are Joe Jo-Jo DeMary, Julie DeMary & Joanne DeMary.

Milton’s mom is Gatha Hurley.

Now Milt and Deb will have more to enjoy the South Carolina beaches. Milt and Deb are no strangers there.

And Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins games. They are no strangers there either.

Monongah’s Betty Lou Nichols Moore passes away

Betty Lou Moore of Monongah passed away Saturday, July 21.

Three of her children live in Mill Fall: Jimmie Lee Moore, William Franklin and Margaret Lou Wills. Her daughter, Edith “Edie” Baranski, lives in Fairmont with Walter Baranski.

Betty Lou’s obituary:

Betty Lou Moore, 86 of Monongah passed away on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Fairmont Regional Medical Center. She was born on August 12, 1931 in Fairmont a daughter of the late Rev. Ira Nichols and Edith Virginia (Cork) Nichols.

Betty was a devoted wife, homemaker and mother, she had worked at G.C. Murphy. She was a protestant by Faith. She was a loving giving person who loved everyone. She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren. Betty Lou enjoyed life, dancing and cookouts. She was a huge sports fan, with a special interest in football.

She was a special lady who will be missed by all who knew her.

Mrs. Moore is survived by her sons and their spouses, Jimmie Lee and Donna Moore of Mill Fall and William Franklin and Billie Jo Moore of Mill Fall; two daughters, and their spouses, Margaret Lou and Mark Wills of Mill Fall and Edith “Edie” and Walter Baranski of Fairmont.

She was blessed with eleven grandchildren and spouses, Aimee Upton, Michael and Lisa Moore, Matthew and Brittany Moore, Amanda and Phillip White, Lee Anna and Bill Hall, Jo Lynn and Matthew Taylor, Jennifer Wills, Bobby Wills, Eric Moore and Misty Parker, Christian and Sherman Stanley and Stephanie Jo and Dale Hollandsworth; twenty great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She is also survived by two sisters, Dorothy Thompson and Evelyn Cunningham both of Fairmont and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert “Bob” Moore on January 25, 1986; her son, James Robert Moore, Jr. and her brothers, Glenn Nichols, Raymond Nichols, Alfred Nichols and Wayne Nichols.

We would like to thank all the wonderful people who cared for our mother, especially, Richard Simpson and his staff, the staff at Fairmont Regional Medical Center, Doctors, Bharti, Mike Jude and Tingler and the caring staff throughout the hospital.

Friends and family may call at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, Fairmont on Wednesday from 2pm to 8pm and on Thursday from 11am to 1pm. The funeral service will be at 1pm on Thursday, July 26, 2018 at the funeral home with Pastor Jonathan Wiley officiating. Interment will follow at Davis Ridge Cemetery.

Barbara Pulice’s mom passes away

Lucille Shaffer, mother of Barbara Pulice, passed away Thursday, July 19.

Barbara is married to Anthony Pulice, Jr., Class of 1945. They live in Fairmont.

Larry Paul Pulice, Lucille and Tony’s son,  passed away in 2014, nine days before he was to marry.

Tony’s sister, Genevieve “Jennie” Pulice, Class of 1936, passed away in 2012. 

Tony’s brother, James William “Bill” Pulice, Class of 1948, passed away in 2001.

Tony’s nephew, Jim Pulice, Class of 1969, was principal of Monongah Middle School.

Tony retired from Fairmont General Hospital in 2013. He also is a retired U.S. Army First Sergeant and was in the 249^th Army Band.

Aaron Justice, Sr. passes away

Aaron Justice, Sr., father of Aaron Justice, Jr., Class of 1972, passed away Wednesday, July 18.

Aaron, Sr. was the widow of Annie Lee.

Aaron, Sr.'s daughter, Alceste Sissy Justice Powell, Class of 1974, is a Fairmont State grad who lives in Augusta, Georgia with husband Glenn Powell, formerly from Fairmont. Sissy was a substitute high school teacher at LaPorte Independent School District in Texas for 12 years.
 

Aaron Jr.'s sister, Alissa Justice, lives in Monongah.

Another sister, Antheai Justice Turner, 1982 North Marion grad who began at Monongah High before it ceased to exist in 1979, lives in Eden, North Carolina. She is a team leader at Kayser-Roth, which is owned by The Golden Lady Group, which operates more than 500 Golenpoint specialty stores throughout Europe. Golden Lady designs and produces sleepwear, women’s hosiery and underwear.

Andrea Justice Domico, Aaron, Jr.’s daughter living in Monongah with husband Dave Domico, a Fairmont West grad, is a Certified Nurses Aide at St. Barbara's Nursing Home in Monongah.

Evangelist Aaron B. “Booker” Justice Sr, 90, of Monongah, passed away on July 18, 2018 at the St. Barbara’s Nursing home in Monongah.

He was born on June 7, 1928 in Harrison County, a son of the late B.T. Washington Justice, and Dora Alceste Deahl Justice

Booker is survived by his children, Aaron Justice Jr and his wife Ann Marie Justice of Monongah, Alceste “Sissy” Powell and her husband Glenn of Georgia , Antheia G. Justice and companion Horace Medley of Eden North Carolina, his grandchildren, Andrea Domico, Aaron Joshua Justice, Aleesha Marie Yanero, Alissa Justice, Mar-Teena Powell Harris, Tabitah Powell Gomersall, Frank W.Mike, Matthew Justin Mike, 7 Great Grandchildren Averyonna Domico, Aria Maree Yanero, Ledgen Justice, Gavin NyKamp, Elisha William Mike, Maddox Justin Mike, Madilynn Ann Mike, also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Booker was preceeded in death by his wife Annie Lee Justice, and his brothers Robert Justice, and Gayle Justice.
Aaron was a WWII veteran stationed in Italy with the United States Army.

Aaron was an Evangelist at Spruce Street Church of Christ in Fairmont, and was also a traveling preacher to other congregations. Aaron also had a Sunday morning radio worship broadcast named “The Churches of Christ salute you”. He enjoyed sports and was an avid Steelers and Pirates fan. Booker was a firm believer in education.

He attended electrician school in Fairmont, and also attended Salem University.

He was a coal miner, having worked 27 years at the Rachel mine; he was known as “Preacher” and then worked 23 years as a Federal Mine Inspector for the Government.

Booker was also a coach in his earlier days, because he believed in the youth of Monongah playing sports.

Aaron was a self-taught Guitarist.

Friends will be received at the Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston on Sunday from 1-6 PM. Booker will lie in state at the Oakhurst Church of Christ in Farmington, from 10-11 am on Monday July 19, 2018 with the funeral at 11 with Evangelist Craig Matheny officiating. Entombment will follow at the Grandview Memorial Gardens in Fairmont.

Roy Parker, a North Marion graduate who started at Monongah High, and Melinda Parker celebrated their 25^th wedding anniversary on Tuesday, July 17. They live in Fairmont, where Roy is a lieutenant in the Fairmont Fire Department.

Melinda posted:

“I can’t believe this is our 25th Silver Wedding Anniversary. You still give me butterflies and have all of my heart. I look forward to the next 25 years of us being older (you much older LOL) and of course grayer. We may have walkers, but as long as you are by my side, we can get through anything. I love you my love of a lifetime.”

Roy responded:

"On this day, 25 years, a quarter of a century ago, I married the love of my lifetime. Dang we're old, LOL. That's a milestone in today's age. I'm happy that you've put up with me. Lord knows I'm not perfect! Looking forward to spending our remaining days together as one! Love You!!”

Cory Parker is their son.

Roy’s father is the late Chester Parker, a Navy veteran.

Irene Yuhas Ice, Class of 1946, who shared an uncle, Steve Kerekes, with me, passed away Thursday, July 12.

Irene as a teenager spent the summer on Pike Street in Monongah with Steve, his wife Helen Olesky Kerekes and Helen’s parents, Martin Olesky and Mary Poremba Olesky, who were my grandparents because their son was John W. Olesky, Sr., my father. Irene was attending summer school at Monongah High.

Grandma Olesky would be irritated because so many boys were visiting Irene. I was about 11 so I thought Irene was really cool and beautiful.

Steve’s sister, Clara Kerekes Yuhas, was Irene’s mother. She ran a boarding house in Carolina to make ends meet after Tunney’s father, Andrew Yuhas, passed away.

Irene had four children: Trudy Ice Lemley, Tom Ice, Terry Ice and Todd Ice.

Both Irene and her sister, Clara “Tunney” Yuhas, Class of 1944, had a thing for the musical Vingle boys during their Monongah High days. Tunney “thought the world of” Raymond Vingle, Irene once told me. Irene dated Anthony “Bugs” Vingle, now deceased, as is Bugs’ widow, Mary Martha Cavrich Vingle, who passed away in 2011.

Tunney predeceased Irene. So did another sister, Elizabeth Yuhas Dudash. Liz was married to Andy Dudash. Tunney was married to Jimmy Kniceley. Irene was married to Guy Ice.

Irene Yuhas Ice

January 19, 1928 - July 12, 2018

Irene Yuhas Ice, 90, of Carolina, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 12, 2018. She was born January 19, 1928 in Carolina, a daughter of the late Clara and Andrew Yuhas. She was the wife of 51 years of the late Guy H. Ice, Jr., whom she married September 10, 1950.

Irene was born, raised and lived her entire life in Carolina and was the oldest member of the Carolina Community at the time of her death. Being that she was very family oriented, she wanted her family together as often as possible.

One of her favorite places to spend time was the family camp in Petersburg by the beautiful mountains and river. She was a 1946 graduate of Monongah High School and a member of the Carolina United Methodist Church. Along with her daughter, Trudy Lemley, she co-authored the book: “Carolina Mine- A Northern WV Coal Camp.”

She was proud of her Hungarian heritage, and that her family was recognized as Family of the Year in 1996. She played softball for the Owens-Illinois team where she was named All-State Center Fielder in 1946-47.

Irene was devoted to her family. She was a devoted wife, wonderful mother and grandmother (Grammie), and was known as Grammie Ice and Mom to many more than just her own family. She loved to cook and bake (her cream horns and her Hungarian nut rolls were the best) and no one left her house with an empty stomach.

Survivors include her four children and spouses: Trudy (Terry) Lemley, Tom (Kim Glover) Ice, Terry (Lori Hawkins) Ice, and Todd (Tamra Prunty) Ice; 6 grandchildren: Trina (Lemley) and Bill Wilson, Lori (Lemley) and Andrew Menas, Teri Beth (Lemley) and Matt Gower, Jay and Amanda (Garrett) Ice, Cody and Britany (Horner) Ice, James and Miranda Fisher; 8 great grandchildren: Audrie, Brier and Bailey Menas, Fletcher, Bow and Steyr Gower, Jake Thomas Ice, Denim Guy Ice and Matthew Tucker; very special cousin: Sandy Moore; a nephew: Andy (Junie) and Carol Dudash; a niece: Tina (Kniceley) Malcomb; and great nieces: Angela Watson and Denise Jacoby and their children.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her sisters: Elizabeth “Liz” Dudash and husband Andy, Clara “Tunny” Kniceley and husband Jimmy; her great grandson: Jeremy Jacob Ice; a niece and her husband: Renae (Kniceley) and Dick Ashcraft; and a sister-in-law and husband: Wilda (Ice) and Lowell Kelly.

The family would like to thank Freda Boggs for her compassionate care and the staff of WV Caring Hospice, who assisted all of her children and grandchildren take care of Irene in Trudy’s home.

Friends may call at the Hutson Funeral Home, 3171 Husky Highway, Farmington, on Friday from 2-8 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon.
