Annie Tarley Delovich, Class of 1955,
widow of Homer Delovich, Class of 1948, passed away Saturday, February 22.
Homer
was one of the best golfers in West Virginia, winning the Green Hills Country
Club championship in Everson again and again and doing well in the West
Virginia State Amateur.
So well that Homer once held a first-day lead
in the West Virginia Open Golf over the legendary White Sulphur Springs
pro Sam Snead.
In 1973 Homer was the first round leader in the West
Virginia Open, but blew up to an 80 when he played the next day with Slamming
Sammy Snead, who won the state golf tourney 14 times. Homer settled down for a
75 in his final round for 224, good enough for fifth place.
Homer quarterbacked the 1947 Monongah High football team.
Also on that team were John Matkovich, who lives
in Palm Harbor, Florida with wife Dolores Sweede Matkovich, Class of 1953,
sister of the late Barbara Sweede, Class of 1956; and the late Bob Fox, Louie DePond, Richard
Basagic, Gene Morris, Chester Vozniak and Joe Argiro.
Annie
and Homer’s son, Dewey Delovich, North Marion Class of 1987, also got his name
on the Green Hills Country Club trophy that by that time was named for his late
father.
Dewey
played in the father-son category of the West Virginia State Amateur with Homer,
who passed away in 2000.
Dewey,
who won the West Virginia high school Class AAA golf championship in 1968, lives on Johns Island, South Carolina and
is assistant pro at the Kiawah Island, South Carolina, Cassique Club.
Dewey
met his wife, Adrianne Tetrick Delovich, at Green Hills when she was in college
and working at the golf course’s restaurant and bar. The couple married in 2000
and are the parents of daughter Marley. Adrianne’s father is
Rocky Tetrick, Class of 1964.
Homer,
who once lived on Pike Street, is buried in Monongah’s Mohammedan Cemetery.
Ronnie
“Coolie” Delovich, Class of 1952, passed away in 1969. Mary Ann Delovich
Matheney is Class of 1976 and Eva Marie Delovich is a North Marion Class of
1982 graduate.
Matt Delovich, 2004 North Marion grad, is Dave Delovich's son and the grandson
of Homer and Anne Delovich.
