When I look at the December birthday for Monongah High Alumni, Otis “Sarge” Shaver’s name pops out at me.

Sarge is Class of 1948, which makes him even older than me, a Class of 1950 graduate. There’s aren’t many of those still above ground.

Sarge is the oldest Lion on my MHS alumni graduation list for December.

Sarge lives on Old Monongah Road. His siblings are Jim Shaver, Class of 1954, who resides Old Monongah Road when he's not visiting his wife's native Peru, and their sister, the Rev. Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Shaver Wycoff, who lives on the Shaver Farm on Old Monongah Road.

Sarge’s son, Mark Shaver, has a daughter, Audra Tucker, who is Sarge’s oldest granddaughter and lives in Greensboro, North Carolina, where Sarge frequently winds up.:)

Ten-hut!!! If you want to wish Sarge a happy birthday, a phone call to (304) 290-0201 will do it.

If you're tech-savvy, his email address is Sargeotis@Yahoo.com

I’m sure Otis would love to hear from Sarge’s Army.

If your name is not on this list, email John Olesky at jo4wvu@neo.rr.com  with your full name, including maiden name, your birthday date, your graduation year and your current hometown.

JoAnn Shumate Chipps passes away

JoAnn Shumate Chipps, Class of 1971, passed away Monday, November 26.

Her husband of 46 years is Thomas Chipps, Class of 1969. They lived in Fairmont although JoAnn grew up in Worthington.

JoAnn Shumate Chipps
Tammy Brooks, a Fairmont West and Fairmont State graduate who lives in Fort Mill, South Carolina with Richard Moore, is JoAnn’s daughter. So is Tracy Estel of Fairmont. They provided JoAnn with five grandchildren.

Tammy is chief nursing officer at Novant Health in South Carolina. She also studied at Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, Winston-Salem and Pfeiffer University in Charlotte, all North Carolina facilities.

JoAnn’s siblings include Jaydee Shumate, Class of 1966; Brenda Shumate Edmonds, Class of 1967, who lives in Colorado; Roger Shumate, Class of 1970; James Thomas Shumate, Class of 1976; and Linda Shumate Seese, 1981 North Marion grad, who lives in Virginia.

Roger enjoyed a visit a few years back from Monte Carpenter, Class of 1970, who lived in Worthington while attending Monongah High, but lives in Baldwin Park, California (population 75,390) in the central San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County.

Monongah High is littered with Chipps and Shumates. I found at least 10 and there probably are more:

I saw Joann Fleming Chipps, Class of 1958, at the 2018 Monongah High Alumni Reunion. JoAnn and Kathren Loss were having a lot of laughs with Tom Colanero.

The Rev. Charles William Chipps, Class of 1966, who in June officiated at the funeral services for Violet “Irene” Satterfield Thompson, Class of 1942. Irene’s brother, Stephen “Bucky” Satterfield, Class of 1949, was part of the faceitiously named Gang That Terrorized Marion County that I ran around with as a teenager at Monongah High.

Pastor Chipps also handled the 2017 funeral services for Elton Allen Duckworth, Class of 1966, and the 2014 services for Bernice Gay Chickerell, widow of Richard Chickerell, Class of 1970.

E. Melvin Chipps, Jr., Class of 1960.

Eugene Chipps, Class of 1975.

Debra Holbert Shumate, Class of 1972.

Tammie Polock Shumate, Class of 1977, who is from Hutchinson but lives in Worthington with her husband.

JoAnn’s obituary:

JoAnn Shumate Chipps, 65, of Fairmont, left this earth on November 26, 2018 at home surrounded by her children and husband of 46 years.

JoAnn was born to Robert and Thelma Shumate in September 1953 in Worthington, WV. She grew up as the fourth of six and graduated from Monongah High School. In 1972, she married her high school sweetheart, Tom Chipps. She worked for many years as the Dietary Manager at the Arbors at Fairmont. She later became involved in the CEOs club. She found great pleasure in baking, cooking, and making beautiful home decorations for family and friends. She most enjoyed a lifetime of happiness with her husband and spending time with her grandchildren.

JoAnn is survived by her husband, two daughters and their husbands, along with five grandchildren. Daughters are Tracy Estel (Kevin) and their son, Ben (11), of Fairmont and Tammy Brooks (Richard Moore) and their children, Nathan (15) & Hallie (14) Brooks and Jesse (16) & Samantha (13) Moore, of Tega Cay, SC. She is also survived by five siblings: Jay Shumate of WV, Brenda Edmonds of CO, Roger Shumate of WV, Tom Shumate of WV, and Linda Seese of VA, along with 18 nieces and nephews and many great-nieces/nephews.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents and one nephew, Shane Edmonds of CO.

A memorial service will be held November 30, 2018 at 7:00PM at the Fairmont First Church of the Nazarene, 1604 Morgantown Avenue, Fairmont. All are welcome to gather after the service for refreshments provided by the church.

The family would like to thank all the nurses, physicians, and other care providers in the Neuro ICU at Ruby, as well as the nurses and aides at Amedisys Hospice. The family requests no flowers but will provide details for a memorial garden.

Monongah High’s 1968 state championship football team will be honored Friday, November 30 in Wheeling Island Stadium during the 7:30 p.m. 2018 Class AA state title game between Fairmont West and Bluefield.

Kerry Marbury, on both the 1968 and 1969 Lions state titlists, lined up a bus to take 1968 players to Wheeling. Marcus Lewis, at time_marc77@yahoo.com is handling the reservations for the bus ride return to glory.

Kerry later starred at WVU and was a state track champ in the dashes.

Alabama football coach Nick “Brother” Saban was quarterback of the 1968 team.

Monongah High won state football titles in 1952, 1955, 1968, 1969 and 1973 and the state baseball title in 1955.

The Polar Bears beat three-time state champ Bridgeport in double overtime to reach the title game. Mingo is undefeated.

Other title games in the various classes:

Undefeated Martinsburg, which won its playoff games by a combined 154-0, will meet Spring Valley, making its first title game appearance, in Class AAA, at noon Saturday, December 1. Martinsburg has four consecutive state titles (2010-2013) and is averaging more than 50 points a game for the season. Quite a juggernaut.

In Class A, Wheeling Central vs. Williamstown at 7 p.m. Saturday, December 1.

Another Lions reunion broke out

Monongah High alumni have unexpected reunions all over the country. I’ve experienced it myself, in Florida and, with a former Akron Beacon Journal co-worker, at an airport in Auckland, New Zealand.

For example, at a Steak ‘n Shake in Bristol, Tennessee, Barbara Marsh stops for a bite to eat after visiting her grandchildren in Alabama.

And runs into Patty Steele McCombs, Monongah Town Recorder.

Barbara is 428 miles from Nick Saban’s territory and Patty is 296 miles from Monongah. What are the odds?

Patty quipped, accurately: “It’s a small world!!!”

Barbara responded: “I was in shock. Looked like I slept under the bridge. Have a great holiday. Good seeing you.”

From Monongah and Alabama to 413 Pinnacle Parkway in Bristol. Amazing!

Patty is married Monongah Water expert Bill McCombs, Class of 1969. Bill’s parents were the late Loretta June Fox McCombs and Harless McCombs. Patty’s uncles are Kevin McCombs, married to Vicky, and Monongah fire chief Harless “Mutt” McCombs, married to Monongah Middle School language arts teacher and children’s books author Lisa Myers McCombs, Class of 1977.

Don’t confuse Barbara Marsh with Barbara Fleming Marsh, who was a Thousand Oaks, California resident before she passed away in December 2016. Fleming Barbara with part of the Fleming family on Fleming Hill in Monongah that overlooked the railroad bridge that crossed over Booths Creek into the West Fork River.

The Barbara Marsh who was widowed when Dennis Toler was a victim in the Farmington #9 mine explosion a half-century ago writes the Monongah News column in the Fairmont Times. And does a dang good job of it, too! Barbara and Dennis had three sons and a daughter.

If you are a Lion and you hit the road, don’t be surprised if you hear another Lion roaring in surprise.

Dave Fazio
Brother has hand in shoulder surgery

Dave Fazio, my cousin because his mother, Frances Olesky Fazio, and my father, John W. Olesky, Sr., were siblings, will be having shoulder surgery Tuesday, November 20 in Alabama.

And it sounds like Alabama Coach Nick “Brother” Saban, quarterback of the 1968 Monongah High state championship team, had a hand in it.

Let his wife, Cora Fazio, who runs Fazio ElderCare in Stoney Lonesome, tell it:

Nick Saban
“Dave’s having shoulder surgery tomorrow in Alabama. I think his doctor is well qualified. Thanks, Brother! Roll
Tide.”

Brother quietly helps Lions for decades. His daddy taught Brother well.

In this case, Brother and cousin David began their friendship at Monongah High. Despite his fame as America's #1 college football coach, Brother doesn't forget his friends and his days at Monongah High.

Dave’s father was Renzy Fazio, a superb golfer who put me in my place when I was on the Fairmont State golf team. And yet tried to build me up to Aunt Frances later by saying “he’s pretty good.”
