Lions 1973 state title coach Rickey Mazza passes away

Rickey Mazza, coach at Monongah High for the 1973 state football championship and a successful high school coach in North Carolina, passed away in Salisbury, North Carolina where he lived.

His parents were Jimmy Mazza, who passed away in 1973, and Ginny Retton Mazza.

His siblings are Fairmont East High graduate Linda Mazza Shelosky, widow of Bernie Shelosky, Class of 1965, who lived on Cottage Street in Monongah more than four decades; and Larry Mazza, who with Linda operated Mazza’s Restaurant in East Fairmont for more than a half-century.

Rickey is survived by his wife, Cheryl; three sons Rick, Shane and Chance; and grandsons Rickey, James and Zack.

When Linda married Bernie she added a ton of in-laws.

Such as Andrea Shelosky Matthews and husband Tim Matthews and Tom Shelosky and wife Phyllis, who all live in Monongah.

 

Tom Shelosky is a son of Julia Lazorick Shelosky and Stanley “Strob” Shelosky, Class of 1958, the late superb golfer at Green Hills.

 

Julia passed away in 2013, Strob in 1993. George Shelosky was Strob’s brother.

The Mazza and Shelosky families are spread throughout Monongah High history.

Theresa Mazza Slamick, Class of 1941, who married Jim Slamick.

Carmella Mazza Davis, Class of 1942.

Elvira Mazza Roth, Class of 1944.

John Mazza, Class of 1948, an excellent infielder for Monongah High.

Yanit Skarzinski Mazza, Class of 1951.

Barbara Shelosky, Class of 1968, who moved from Monongah to San Diego, California. So did Andrea Shelosky.

Tom’s sister, Becky Shelosky Carvillano, Class of 1961, lives in Fairmont.

Bernie Shelosky’s aunt, the late Sophie Dudiak Shelosky, was a sister of Mary Dudiak Raymond, who was married to Angelo Raymond and the mother of the late Bobby Raymond, Class of 1951, and Rosemary Raymond Pagliaro, wife of Carman Pagliaro, who lives in Fairmont.

 

Bob’s widow, Susan Russell Raymond, lives in White Hall.  Bob and Susan’s children are Paula, married to Sam Adkins and living in Idamay; Robin Long of Colfax; Mary Harr of Pleasant Valley; and another Bob Raymond, married to Susie and living in Fairmont.

Shirley Fox Wilson’s son & Janice Williams McIntire pass away

Mannington High grad David Wilson, son of Shirley Fox Wilson, passed away Sunday, January 20.

April 15, 1952 - January 20, 2019

David Lee Wilson, age 66, of Fairmont, WV passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at his residence. He was born April 18, 1952 at Fairmont, WV, a son of the late David Harry Wilson and Shirley Lee Fox Wilson.

David is survived by his wife Denise Santee Wilson, with whom he has been married to for 22 years; a daughter, Amanda Lee Wilson Coffman and fiancée August Rebold of Fairmont; 3 granddaughters, Emberlee Paige Coffman, Harleigh Rebold and Carleigh Rebold; a sister, Terri Lynn and Rick Tennant of Fairview; 2 aunts, Mary Jane Hickman of Fairmont and Lois Simmons of Fairmont; several cousins; 4 nephews, Brian and Sarah Tennant, Justin Tennant, Andy Tennant and Zach Tennant; one niece, Victoria Cooper; 3 great-nephews, Reese, Ethan and Eli Tennant; special friends, Peggy and Michael Garcia, Jamie Corder and her two daughters, Nina Corder and Savannah Corder; and a brother-in-law, Steve and Kim Cooper of Aiken, SC; a sister-in-law, Sharon King of Fairmont; 2 nieces, Susanne Garrett of Fairmont and Cynthia Marsh of Arizona; a nephew, Patrick Tucker of Fairmont; and three great-nieces, Marci Van Gilder, Ali Bienkosky and Jessica Bienkosky.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Brooks Wilson.

David worked at Consolidated Coal Mine #22 Loveridge for 34 years retiring in 2007. He then was an electrical instructor after retirement for the coal company. He was an avid camper, gardener and a first year bee-keeper. He enjoyed 4-wheeler riding and his passion was in computers. He was a member of the AF&AM; Masonic Lodge #9 in Fairmont. He was a Super Grandfather to his grandchildren.

Family and friends will be received at Masters Funeral Home, 209 Main Street, Mannington, WV on Thursday, January 24, 2018 from 2-8:00pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 25, 2019 in the funeral home beginning at 11:00am with Pastor Daniel Booth officiating. Burial will follow at the Shinnston Memorial Cemetery. Janice McIntire’s obituary:

Janice Elaine McIntire, 87, of Enterprise passed away on Saturday January 19, 2019 at the Grafton City Hospital. She was born on March 3, 1931 in Marion County to Vernon Williams and Opal Parrish Williams. Preceded in death is her husband Howard Jr. McIntire.
Janice was a beautician and was self-employed.
A private graveside service was conducted on Tuesday January 22, 2019 at the Shinnston Memorial Cemetery.

Frank DeMoss’ widow passes away

Shirley Vandetta DeMoss,  widow of Frank DeMoss, the pitcher who brought Monongah High its only state baseball title in 1955, passed away Sunday, January 20.

Her parents were Felix and Agnes Vandetta. Her siblings are Carl Vandetta, and the late Jim Vandetta and the late Betty Vandetta Dempsey.

They grew up on Pike Street Extension, not far from the first of two bridges over the same Mill Fall creek that I crossed when we visited Gezala and Frank Loss.

I’m Florida for 2 months and can’t do the fancy things that I do in Ohio.

Shirley’s obituary:

Shirley Ann DeMoss, 79, of Monongah, passed away Sunday, January 20, 2019. She was born in Monongah on February 24, 1939, daughter of the late Felix and Agnes Vandetta.

Shirley graduated from Monongah High School and attended West Virginia University. She formerly worked at Sears and was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. She enjoyed her church, sports (especially baseball), singing, gardening, and her cats.

Shirley is survived by her son, David DeMoss and his wife Stacia; grandchildren, Deidra DeMoss, Gwyneth DeMoss, and Roman DeMoss; a brother, Carl Vandetta and his wife Martha; a sister-in-law, Betty Vandetta; nieces, Valerie Aldridge and her husband Jim, Beth Ann Wininger and her husband Mike, and Mary Sue Elliott and her husband Tom; and nephews, Greg Vandetta and his wife Debbie, Richard “Bubs” DeMoss and his wife Elisha; and special neighbor, Marches Parker.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Frank DeMoss; her brother, Jim Vandetta; her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Jack Dempsey; and her brother-in-law, Marty DeMoss.

Dolores Stancheck Fazio passes away

Dolores Stancheck Fazio, widow of Monongah High baseball-basketball-football star John Fazio, passed away Monday, January 14.

Their son, also named John Fazio, is a Marietta, Ohio College professor living in Charleston. Another son, Joe, lives in Monongah with wife Paula Fazio.

John Fazio; Renzy Fazio, married to Frances Olesky Fazio, sister of my father, John W. Olesky, Sr. and who ran a grocery store on Jackson Street; Jeanette Fazio DiBiase, who died in 2003; Albert Fazio of New York; Mary Virginia Fazio Pasquale and husband Joseph of Fairmont; the late Nick, James, Joseph and Michael; Edith Fazio DeCarlo, Elizabeth Fazio Domico, Angeline Fazio Prozzillo and Carmella Fazio DePond. 

Dolores was a Fairview High graduate.

I remember John Fazio, Dolores’ husband, best as a lanky, effective pitcher for Monongah High. But Renzy Fazio was the #1 golfer in the family. Only Homer Delovich was better among Monongah High graduates on a golf course.

Dolores V. Fazio, 89, of Monongah, passed away Monday, January 14 at the Tygart Center of Genesis Health Care, Fairmont, WV. She was born July 1, 1929 in Nemacolin, PA, the only child of Andy and Mary Partica Stancheck. Mrs. Fazio was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Monongah.

In addition to being a dedicated homemaker, Dolores worked as a telephone operator at C & P Telephone, a retail clerk at G. C. Murphy and insurance clerk at Peoples Life Insurance at her retirement. Dolores graduated from Fairview High School.

She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, John Jr. and Christine of Charleston, and Joseph and Paula of Monongah; four grandchildren, Michael of Lousiville, KY, Nick of Fayetteville, NC, Sean of Monongah, and Alex of Bel Air, MD; as well as four great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Katherine and Madeleine of Bel Air and Isabel of Louisville.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Fazio was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Fazio Sr.

Calling hours will be 1-7 p.m. Monday, January 21 for Ken Kincaid, who passed away Wednesday, January 19.

Ken and Frances Lynn Price Kincaid have two sons, Kenneth, Jr. and Justin Michael Kincaid. Parents and children live in Four States.

Ken was predeceased by his sister, Rebecca Sue Dano.
 
Harry Kincaid, father of Ken Kincaid, Class of 1968, and George Kincaid, father of Ina Kincaid Fullen, Class of 1962, are brothers.

Ina sold the family farm and moved to Fairmont after her husband, Danny Fullen, Class of 1961, passed away in 2016.

 

Ken's obituary:

Kenneth Lee Kincaid, Sr. of Four States passed away on Wednesday January 16, 2019 at United Hospital Center in Bridgeport after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Fairmont on June 7, 1950 son of Harry L. Kincaid of Fairmont and the late Mildred Vuckson Kincaid.

 

He joined the army in 1968 and served in the Viet Nam War and twelve additional years after that. He was a journeyman electrician with IBEW from which her retired. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

 

He is survived by his wife of 33 years Frances Lynn Prince Kincaid, two sons, Kenneth Lee Kincaid, Jr. and Justin Michael Kincaid all of Four States. He is also survived by two grandchildren Emily Lynn Kincaid and Jayden Lynn Kincaid, one sister Mary Louise Royer of Michigan. Also surviving is his mother-in-law, Clarice Prince of Four States, brother-in-law Paul Dale (Kayla) Prince of Four States, sister-in-law Michelle (Ralph) White of Grays Run.

 

He is also survived by six nephews who were the light of his life, Shawn Ashcraft and Jodi Russell, Paul Dale Prince, Joshua Prince, Dawson Kirby, and Hunter Cotrill, and one niece Izabella Grace Prince. He is also survived by his aunt Patti Enoch of Ohio and Uncle John Ryan of Michigan, and several other aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

 

In addition to his mother he was preceded in death by his sister Rebecca Sue Dano, father-in-law Paul Prince, and several aunts and uncles and cousins.

 

Friends may call at Ross Funeral Home 801 Fairmont Avenue Fairmont on Monday from 1-7:00 P.M. and on Tuesday from 10:00 A.M. till Noon. A committal service with full military honors will follow at 1:30 P.M. at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Pruntytown.

 

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to his wife Frances to assist with funeral expenses.

Ken Kincaid, Class of 1968, passed away Thursday, January 17.

His widow is Francie Kincaid, who went to Monongah High before graduating from North Marion.

Thus ends “a year from hell,” as Francie calls it, and one of the great loves among Lions.

Francie posted:

“Today I lost the Love of my life. I have never felt a pain that hurts so bad. No Man has ever loved like Kenny did.

“After 36 years I am lost and I don't know how to do this without my Kenny. He has always been the love of my life. Fly High My Babe.

“R.I.P. Babe you fought so hard and you are the strongest man I ever Knew. You will always be the part of my heart that is missing. Walk with God and be pain free. You will never suffer again.

"I promise to be strong and do what I promised you I would do.

“But please don’t get upset with me right now. I am angry, hurt, lost. I just want to hear you say one more time, ‘There is my Angel the love of my life.’

“I don’t know how not to be your wife. I don’t know how to be a widow as they call me now.

“I just know the pain of being without you is so devastating. Please let me know that you are with me. I am lonely and need to know you are still with me.”

Boy, it that doesn’t get your deep in your heart, you’re not human. Particularly those of us, like me, who also have lost a long-time spouse. It is the darkest moment in life.

Ken and Frances Lynn Price Kincaid have two sons, Kenneth, Jr. and Justin Michael Kincaid. Parents and children live in Four States.

Ken was predeceased by his sister, Rebecca Sue Dano.

Ken was a member of the International Brotherhood of Elections Union.

Kayla Prince is Francie’s sister.

Don Evans, married to Wauneda Soles Evans for 70 years, passed away Monday, January 14.

Their sons are Bill, Brian and Bentley Evans and the late Robert and Bruce Evans. Don’s sister is Dolores McElwee.

Their son, Brian Evans, is married to Patti DeMary Evans, Class of 1972.

Brianna Evans Winbish is Elite Barnyard Couture manager who lives in Fairmont and Brian and Patti’s daughter.

Tina Ann “Peaches” Aldridge DeMary, Class of 1945, and husband Frank DeMary, Jr., Class of 1947, are Patti’s parents.

Donald Louis Evans

May 13, 1927 - January 14, 2019

Donald Louis Evans, 91, of Fairmont passed away on Monday, January 14, 2019. He was born in Brownsville, PA on May 13, 1927, son of the late Clarence Ray Evans and Anna Beadling Evans.

Donald was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II and retired as a motor winder for Westinghouse Apparatus/Eastern Electric. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Monongah. He is a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 31 in Shinnston.

Donald is survived by his wife, Wauneda Soles Evans; his sons, William “Bill” Evans and his wife, Mary, Brian Evans and his wife Patti, and Bentley “Benny” Evans and friend Pam McCoy; grandchildren, Erin Gorman and her husband Dave, Ashley Painter and her husband Luke, Lindsey Evans, Brett Evans and his wife Crystal, Brianna Wimbish and her husband Chuck, Jeremy Evans and his wife Jennifer, Becky Wilson and husband Jeremy, Jennifer Smith and her husband Chris, and Kyle Evans; great grandchildren, Connor Gorman, Cooper Gorman, Joshlynn Boone, Marissa Boone, Maddox Wimbish, Camden Evans, Brayden Evans, Brea Evans, Calli Smith, Katie Smith, Christopher Smith, and Evan Wilson; a sister, Dolores MceLwee and her husband Donald; a daughter-in-law, Judy Evans; and best friend and cousin, Bonnie Sue Moats.

Margaret “Mimi” Knight, Class of 1968, passed away Sunday, January 13.

Margaret’s niece, Heather Thompson-Carmines, who Facebooked the sad news, wrote:

“My Aunt MiMi and surrogate mom passed away today peacefully. She is in no more pain and is in Heaven with mom already whooping it up. I can’t imagine her not being there to answer the phone to answer questions about how to cook, our family or just to hear me bitch and complain.

“I thought this woman was invincible. She survived cancer (the same kind that killed my mom) myasthenia gravis, two heart attacks and many other ailments. She may have lived her last years in pain but she gave me the greatest memories of my life. No more pain for you.

“Give mom and Roger and Grandma and Grandpa a kiss. Maybe you can figure out who that little girl was you were talking about yesterday. RIP Mim’s.”

Judy Rhoades McCoy, Class of 1968 and a Fairmont State graduate and Fairmont General Hospital nurse, recalls:

“I met Anne when we were in 7th grade at Monongah Junior High School. She was always kind and sweet to others. She will surely be missed. Love and prayers to her family.”

Margaret’s sister, Chris Martin, is married to Joe Martin, brother of Henry “Dinkle” Martin.

Deceased sisters are Brenda Stover and Elaine Wasarovich, Class of 1965.

Chris Martin worked for Amelia Shenasky Zentz and Bruce Zentz, who owned the Dairy Kone for 18 years, then bought it from Amelia and Bruce. Chris sold the Monongah landmark to Monongah Town Recorder Patty McCombs.

Margaret Anne Knight, 69, of Monongah passed quietly on January 12, 2019 in Fairmont, WV. Anne or ”MiMi’ as she was also called was born in Fairmont on February 4, 1949 to Margaret Pauline Knight and Harold J Knight.

She was a 1968 graduate of Monongah High School where she was in the high school band. She worked as a hairdresser and Manager of the Village Pantry for over 30 years. She loved reading, crafting, camping, fishing and most importantly spending time with her family especially her nieces, great nieces and great nephews. She was a surrogate mom to her nieces and great niece Hope and was always there when we would call no matter what time of day. She had a huge heart not only for her family but for the various animals collected over the years. Currently she leaves behind puppies Puggles and Lucy and kitties Willow, Tippy and Belle.

She is survived by her two sisters Deb Knight, whom she lived with, and Chris and Joe Martin. She also has 7 nieces and nephews (along with spouses and children) Heather Thompson-Carmines and children Cody, Hope and Mikayla, Stephanie & Jeff Beach and children MacKenzie and Emma, Justin and Amanda Stover and children Nicolas and Ethan, Melissa and Dave Prunty and Izak Prunty, Jennifer Martin, Brian Warsarovich and Todd Wasarovich.

She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her sister Brenda Stover in 2011, Brother in Law Roger Stover in 2017 and Sister Elaine Wasarovich in 2018. She donated her body to science at WVU for the possibility of finding a cure for Myasthenia Gravis which she suffered from. A private family service will be at a later date. Fiesty and fun-loving Jeanette Barr Baczuk, Class of 1940, celebrated her 96^th birthday on Sunday, January 6.

Jeanette quipped in her email to me:

“I’ll bet you didn’t think I was still around.”

To the contrary, Jeanette. Although Ashland, Ohio, where you live, is 55 miles from Tallmadge, Ohio, where I live, I could hear your birthday celebration. Kudos to one of my favorite Lions.

Jeanette added:

“Saturday my kids and grandkids took me to my favorite restaurant Skyway East for dinner.  Had loads of company all weekend.”

 
Jeanette’s children (and spouses):  Jim (Rachelle), who lives in Thomas near Blackwater Falls where the annual Baczuk family reunions take place; Lynne (Randy) Beecham, who lives in Bellville, Ohio; Maribeth Moore, who married Skyway chef Bill Moore and, like Jeanette, lives in Ashland; and Jan (Rodney) Penrose, who lives in Mansfield, Ohio.  Grandchildren are Brian Moore, in Atlanta; Stephen (Kirstin) Moore, in Columbus; Adam and Rachel Penrose, in Mansfield, and Jessica Baczuk, in Davis.

Jeanette quips:

“Unbelievably, I have no great-grandchildren.”

 

I'm only 86 but I think Jeanette can run rings around me.

Jeanette’s father was the legendary Dr. James Monroe Barr, who delivered nearly the entire population of Worthington. They are known as the Barr Babies.

Jeannette’s siblings:

Suzanne Barr Loss, Class of 1948, who married Arnold “J.B.” Loss, Class of 1947.

Harrelson Barr, Class of 1939, whose daughter, Marcie Barr Marsh, is Class of 1966.

After Monongah High, Jeanette graduated from Bowling Green University and married Frank Baczuk.

Jeanette is a regular at the Baczuk family reunion in Blackwater Falls every year.

Jeannette is on the board of the Ashland Senior Center and a volunteer in the thrift shop. The Golden Agers take a monthly trip.

Jeannette and I are a pair of old codgers who refuse to curl up in a rocking chair and wait for the Grim Reaper.

WVU graduate Patrice today is the only African-American woman to be president of the American Medical Association.

And it began when her father took Patrice from Bluefield to Morgantown to watch a WVU football game.

She fell in love with the place, as I did and many other have. "Country Roads" is more than a song. It's a siren sound of West Virginia.

The former majorette became a renown psychiatrist.
