I went to a festival and met former WVU star’s mother

I keep running into relatives of famous people.

When we were in The Villages, Florida for three winter months I crossed paths with Susie Williams Dodd, daughter of Roy Williams, Jerry West's East Bank High School basketball coach.

Today Paula and I went to the Geauga County Maple Festival in Chardon, Ohio. A woman saw my “WV” jacket and said, “My son used to play for the Mountaineers.”

It was Joey Madsen’s mother.

Joey was a 4-year starting football center for WVU. He came to WVU from Chardon High School, where he was coached by Jim Dipofi, in 2008 and was named All-Big East three times and was in on nearly 1,000 plays a season. He was first-team All-Ohio at offensive guard for Chardon.

In January Joey signed a two-year, $960,000 contract with the Green Bay Packers as a free agent: $435,000 for the first year and $525,000 for the second year.

Madsen, a 6-foot-3, 305-pounder out of WVU, originally was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers as a non-drafted free agent in 2013. He was released by the Steelers and played for the Los Angeles KISS during the 2014 Arena Football League season.

WVU band chosen for 2016 Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in New York City
“Country Roads” is coming to New York, New York.
The WVU Marching band, The Pride of West Virginia, will march in the Nov. 24, 2016 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City for the first time. The Pride has almost 400 members who will need nine charter buses and 120 hotel rooms for the trip.

There will be 10 bands, but so far only WVU and Harrison High School Marching Band of Kennesaw, Georgia have been announced by the Macy’s web site.

“The WVU Marching Band knows how to put on a show and they know how to entertain,” said Wesley Whatley, the creative director of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

“As soon as we saw the halftime show from last fall, the committee responded to the energy and responded to the crowd response. The band is there to entertain the crowd and we know that will translate to the New York streets for us.”

Known for its signature performance of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” in the form of a medley arranged by WVU professor of piano James Miltenberger, the band often draws cheers — and a singing assist — from fans as members march into the formation of the outline of the state of West Virginia.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which began in 1924 — there were cancellations during World War II — is an internationally known Thanksgiving morning tradition televised on NBC.

Parade participants march a 2.5-mile route that begins at Central Park West and goes south to Columbus Circle, east to Sixth Avenue and south to the front of the flagship Macy’s department store on 34th Street in Herald Square.

3.5 million along the streets and 50 million on television witness the event.

Macy's 2015 Participating Bands were Gulf Coast High School Marching Band, Naples, Florida; Lewis Cass High School Marching Kings, Walton, Indiana; Munford High School Marching Band, Tennessee; Nogales High School Marching Band, La Puente, California; North Hardin High School Marching Band, Radcliff, Kentucky; Stephen F. Austin State University Lumberjack Marching Band, Nacogdoches, Texas; University of Illinois Marching Illini, Champaign, Illinois; University of Virginia Cavalier Marching Band, Charlottesville, Virginia; Walled Lake Central Viking Marching Band, Walled Lake, Michigan; West Chester University Golden Rams Marching Band, Pennsylvania; Macy's Great American Marching Band, USA; and NYPD Marching Band, New York City.
