They are the only two tunnels in
America between two states.
The East River Tunnel is between
Bluefield, West Virginia and Rocky Gap, Virginia, only 20 miles from the Big

U.S. Route 25E traffic under Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. Between Middlesboro,
Kentucky and
Cumberland Gap,
Tennessee, it replaced “Massacre
Mountain” (because so many travelers died trying to maneuver on the twisting
road).
