West Virginia suing VW over emissions cheating
The
West Virginia Attorney General's Office wants $5,000 per violation from
Volkswagen of America over the automaker's cheating on auto emissions. VW
rigged its software so that, when the cars were tested while stationery,
pollution controls were turned on to reduce the output of nitrogen oxide. When
the VWs are on the road, the computer lets it spit out 40 times the permitted
pollution.
The
Kanawha County Circuit Court complaint also seeks refunds for West Virginia
consumers who bought Volkswagen's TDI clean diesel vehicles.
Worldwide,
11 million VW diesel cars have evaded the emissions tests illegally.
WVU engineer, Daniel Carder, and his WVU team
caught Volkswagen cheating by testing the VWs while driving them on the West
Coast.
VW CEO Martin Winterkorn
resigned. The
head of Porsche -- Matthias Mueller -- was promoted to the top job at
Volkswagen.
VW set
aside $7.3 billion for pay off claims tied to the cheating.
VW got
away with it for seven years. Till WVU’s guys entered the picture and smoked
out VW’s chicanery.
