Joe Hanus’ widow passes away at 98

Stella Marie Sobolewski Hanus, widow of garage owner Joe Hanus of the Hanus Grocery family, passed away Friday, September 11 in Fairmont.

Joe ran the garage on the Jackson Street side of the building on U.S. 19, across the street from Thoburn School. His parents ran the Hanus Grocery on the other end of the building. The PNA Tavern run by the Brzuzy family was between the two Hanus businesses.

Joe’s sisters were Ann Hanus Pavlik, widow of Mictch Pavlik and later the girlfriend of my father, John W. Olesky, Sr., and Rose Hanus Vozniak, widow of Edmund "Coozy" Vozniak.  

Stella’s sister was Sophie Sobolewski Lushinski, who was married to John Lushinski and lived on Church Street two doors down from the Olesky family.

Stella Marie Hanus, 98, left the earth peacefully on September 11, 2015 at the Fairmont Nursing and Rehab Center in Fairmont. Stella was born on February 5, 1917 in Farmington to the late Ignatz and Adelia Sokolosky Sobolewski who migrated to the United States from Poland. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Joe J. Hanus in 1976.

She was also preceded in death by her grandson Joseph L. McCutcheon, sister Sophie Lushinski, twin brothers John and Stanley Sobolewski and grandson-in-law Dale Cramer.

 
She is survived by her oldest daughter Elizabeth J. McCutcheon, her youngest daughter Delores Ann Huey and son-in-law Burnard Huey who she thought of as a son, all of Bridgeport. Her grandchildren Cindy Cramer of Fairmont, Dr. Gary McCutcheon and wife Genny of Bridgeport, Burnard f. Huey II and wife Beth of Weirton, Christopher J. Huey and wife Tina of Mosely, Va and Anna McCutcheon of Scott Depot.

Her great grandchildren, Dusty Matthews and husband Steve, Jessica Hibbs and partner Tom Kemp, Robert McCutcheon and wife Jessica, Brian Mcutcheon and wife Katie, Jordan, Kristen and Trey McCutcheon, Melanie, Taylor and Hunter Huey and Noah and Sierra Huey. Also surviving are her great great grandchildren Scout Mathews, Caleigh McCutcheon, Luka Kemp and Simon McCutcheon. She is also survived by her brother Steve Sobolewski and wife Madeline and sister-in-law Stella Sobolewski all of Rachel and several nieces and nephews.

All of her life Stella was always caring for her entire family. She was a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother who tirelessly was the “glue” that held her family together.

 
Stella was always working, from Rachel Post Office to Jones Department store, Langs, Hess’ and last at the Senior Aide Program Cancer Treatment Center as secretary when she retired at 85.

She was Catholic by faith and a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.

She was an avid sports enthusiast, always having a “front row seat” to the games on TV. And her puzzle books kept her busy long after she could no longer crochet.

She was a blessing and an inspiration to us all leaving the warmest of memories.

Friends may call at Ross Funeral Home 801 Fairmont Avenue Fairmont on Monday from 2-8:00 P.M. A vigil service led by Deacon Lou Belldina will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday September 15, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Watson with Fr. Walter Jagela as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Shinnston Memorial Cemetery in Shinnston.
