Mary Scarcella Donofrio of the Chieftain family passes away

Mary Scarcella Donofrio, who with her siblings graduated from Monongah High, passed away Tuesday, May 19.

She was at Genesis Healthcare Tygart Center on Country Club Road in Fairmont.

Her siblings included Albert “Chooch” Scarcella of Ohio, who was quite a card sharp in his teen years, and sisters Edith, Sylvia and Sophia.

They grew up in Chieftain. But Chooch and his family had moved to Monongah later.

Mary Scarcella Donofrio, 88, of Fairmont died Tuesday, May 19 in the Genesis Healthcare Tygart Center.

She was born Nov. 19, 1926 in Chieftain, West Virginia a daughter of the late Pasquale and Teresa Candalese Scarcella.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Adriano Leo Donofrio, in 2006.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James and Joyce Donofrio of Fairmont; a brother, Albert Scarcella, of Ohio; sisters Edith Scarcella of Monongah, Sylvia Scarcella Gillespie of Fairmont and Sophia Scarcella Mierner of Pittsburgh; grandchildren Kimberly Brotosky and her husband Rod of Fairmont, Michelle Michael of Pittsburgh, Ryan James Donofrio and fiancé Melissa McHenry of Morgantown, and Anthony Joseph Donofrio of Fairmont; and great-grandson Austin Franklin Sprowls of Fairmont.

Mrs. Donofrio was preceded in death by a son, Gary Allen Donofrio, in 2006; 3 brothers; and 5 sisters.

Mrs. Donofrio was a homemaker and member of the Immaculate Conception Church of Fairmont. She enjoyed being with family and friends at the Tygart Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 122 South High Street, Morgantown, WV 26501.

The family will receive friends at the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 20. The Catholic funeral service will be recited at the funeral home at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 21 in the Immaculate Conception Church, 329 Maryland Avenue, Fairmont with Father Walter Jagela as celebrant. A committal service will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Fairmont.
