There will be a Celebration of Life May
15 for Lewis Jackson Haines, Class of 1959, who passed away March 13 in St.
Louis, Missouri.
He was the widower of Annette Haines,
who passed away in 2017. Lewis lived in Troy, Illinois with his current wife,
Debi Kuhl-Haines.
Lewis had a long history as a pilot,
serving tours of duty in Vietnam with the Air Force for 12 years and later with
the Air Force National Guard until retiring as a Lt. Colonel in 1988. And was a
pilot for both TWA and American Airlines. And taught pilots until 2020. He
worked for McDonnell Aircraft Company.
At Monongah High, Lew was in the band and
orchestra, National Honor Society and attended Boys State.
Lewis’
brother, David Haines, Class of 1964, is a WVU
Pharmacy School graduate who grew up in Worthington and retired after more than
four decades as a pharmacist.
Lewis and David’s parents were the late Wilda Margaret
Haines and Arley Lewis Haines, who once owned Precision Hydraulics in
Worthington.
Annette was chair of the Scientific
Pedagogy Committee at the Montessori Training Center in St. Louis.
She came from Belleville, Illinois.
She was outstanding in
horsemanship, winning the Pleasure Open Class title at the Illinois State Fair.

Lewis Jackson
Haines, 79, of Troy Illinois, born July 15, 1941 in Fairmont WV, passed away
March 13, 2021 in St. Louis MO.
After graduating from West Virginia
University, Lew had a long career in the United States Air Force. He was
commissioned in 1964 and served two tours of Vietnam as an F4 fighter pilot. He
was active duty for 12 years and then served in the USAF National Guard as a F4
Check Pilot and flight safety Officer until retiring as Lt Colonel in 1988.
During his time in the Air Guard he worked for McDonnell Aircraft Company and
later Emerson Electric.
After his
military retirement he became a commercial pilot for TWA and then flew
internationally for United Airlines. He retired as a Captain in 2000. He worked
after that as a flight Simulator Instructor, training pilots and teaching
cockpit procedures. He retired from Flight Safety in August 2020. In 2016 he
was awarded the Wright Brothers “Master Pilot” award for Fifty years of
Dedicated Service.
Lew’s late wife Annette Haines, a scholar of
Montessori education, founded the Montessori Training Center and Lab School in
St. Louis, MO. Lew, after Annette passed in 2017, remained engaged to ensure
that Dr. Haines’ legacy would continue. He was intimately involved in the
design and construction process to ensure that the end result reflected her
vision. He was a true partner, a visionary and a friend to all. Montessori
will continue to thrive in Saint Louis because of the strong foundation laid by
Lew and Annette.
In 1996 Lew and Annette started Red Fox Paso
Finos in Troy, Illinois. They had a passion for their business of promoting,
training, breeding and showing Paso Fino horses. In 2019, he and his
four-year-old gelding won the highest achievement in the show ring as Grand
National Amateur Pleasure Gelding Champions. He had served as both President
and Vice President of Ozark Empire Paso Fino Horse Association, and was a
member of the Board of Directors for many years and Chair of PFHA’s Computer
Committee, implemeting a series of important technological advances for the
Association. His commitment, work ethic and dedication to the PFHA will
forever be remembered and his legacy will be passed onto future generations.
It was in the community of the Red Fox Paso
Fino family that he met his wife Debi, and together they enjoyed time on the
farm and many other adventures.
In any
additional spare time, you would find him engrossed in his hobby of collecting,
studying and driving classic Jaguar cars.
Lew is
survived by his wife, Debi Kuhl-Haines, his brother, David (Kris) Haines, his
children Michele (Eric) Clark of Edwardsville, IL, and Lewis Haines of Troy,
IL, Dr. Monica (Dr. Matthew) DiMagno of Ann Arbor, MI, Mamie (Barton) Harvey of
Lakeville, MN, David (Dr. Jennifer Stephani) McCarthy of Olympia, WA, Sydni
Bozada of Belleville, IL, Kelci Bozada-Holt (Alex) of Creve Coeur MO;
Grandchildren Whitney Shaw, Jack and Sam Clark, Kelsey, Blake and Ashley
Haines, Charles, Elena, Alex and Lulu DiMagno, Anna, Maria and Jon Harvey,
Benjamin and Kate McCarthy.
