Tammy Brooks, a Fairmont West and Fairmont
State graduate who lives in Fort Mill, South Carolina with Richard Moore, is
JoAnn’s daughter. So is Tracy Estel of Fairmont. They provided JoAnn with five
grandchildren.
Tammy is chief nursing officer at Novant
Health in South Carolina. She also studied at Presbyterian Hospital School of
Nursing, Winston-Salem and Pfeiffer University in Charlotte, all North Carolina
facilities.
JoAnn’s siblings include Jaydee Shumate,
Class of 1966; Brenda Shumate Edmonds, Class of 1967, who lives in Colorado;
Roger Shumate, Class of 1970; James Thomas Shumate, Class of 1976; and Linda
Shumate Seese, 1981 North Marion grad, who lives in Virginia.
Roger enjoyed a visit a few years back from
Monte Carpenter, Class of 1970, who lived in Worthington while attending
Monongah High, but lives in Baldwin Park, California (population 75,390) in the
central San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County.
Monongah High is littered with Chipps and
Shumates. I found at least 10 and there probably are more:
I saw Joann Fleming Chipps, Class of 1958, at
the 2018 Monongah High Alumni Reunion. JoAnn and Kathren Loss were having a lot
of laughs with Tom Colanero.
The Rev. Charles William Chipps, Class of
1966, who in June officiated at the funeral services for Violet “Irene”
Satterfield Thompson, Class of 1942. Irene’s brother, Stephen “Bucky”
Satterfield, Class of 1949, was part of the faceitiously named Gang That
Terrorized Marion County that I ran around with as a teenager at Monongah High.
Pastor Chipps also handled the 2017 funeral
services for Elton Allen Duckworth, Class of 1966, and the 2014 services for Bernice
Gay Chickerell, widow of Richard Chickerell, Class of 1970.
E. Melvin Chipps, Jr., Class of 1960.
Eugene Chipps, Class of 1975.
Debra Holbert Shumate, Class of 1972.
Tammie Polock Shumate, Class of 1977, who
is from Hutchinson but lives in Worthington with her husband.
JoAnn’s obituary:

A memorial service will be held November 30, 2018 at 7:00PM at the Fairmont First Church of the Nazarene, 1604 Morgantown Avenue, Fairmont. All are welcome to gather after the service for refreshments provided by the church.
The family would like to thank all the nurses, physicians, and other care providers in the Neuro ICU at Ruby, as well as the nurses and aides at Amedisys Hospice. The family requests no flowers but will provide details for a memorial garden.
