Senator Manchin’s mother passes away

Mary O. Manchin, of Farmington, passed away peacefully Monday morning (May 12, 2014) at her residence. She was born October 30, 1922 in Rachel, a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Gouzd.

Mary was the devoted wife of 60 years to the late John Manchin, Sr., who preceded her in death on December 24, 2002.

She is survived by her loving family: daughter Janet Manchin Thompson and husband Robert and grandchildren Mary and Peter Thompson and great granddaughter Bella; son Senator Joe Manchin, III and wife Gayle, granddaughter Heather Bresch and husband Jeff, great grandchildren, Kelsey, Madeline, Chloe and Jack, grandson Joseph Manchin IV and wife Traci, great grandchildren Joseph V, Sophie and Carly, granddaughter Brooke Roberts and husband Marshall and great granddaughter Vivian; son Dr. John Manchin, II and wife Kathy, granddaughter Angela Hager and husband Chad, great grandchildren Olivia, Ethan and Claira, grandson John Manchin, III and wife Lissa and great grandchildren John IV, Lauren, Ava and Anthony, granddaughter Christina Manchin and great grandson Angelo, granddaughter Amy Kosinski and husband Derrick and great grandson Derrick; daughter Paula Manchin Llaneza and husband Manuel, grandson Manuel Llaneza, III and wife Ashley, great grandsons Manuel IV and Luke, granddaughter Abby Anderson and husband Todd, great grandchildren Domenic and Maryan; son Rock Manchin and wife Cindy, granddaughter Mary Beth Manchin, grandson Rocky Manchin and wife Katie, great granddaughter Lanie; daughter-in-law Carol Manchin; sister Ann Pollock of Rachel; brothers and sisters-in-law: Robert and Beverly Gouzd, Fairmont, Joe and Carol Gouzd, Farmington, Stella Manchin, Farmington, Ann Manchin, Bridgeport, Louise Gouzd; also sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Mary was also preceded in death by sisters: Frances Baker and husband Paul, Helen Tatar and husband Joe; brothers John Gouzd and wife Jenny, Karl Gouzd; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Charles Pollock, A. James Manchin, Joe Manchin, Jr., Rose and George Levitsky and Frances and Sam Aloi.

The joy of her life was her family as she was a devoted wife, a dedicated mother, and was known as “Nunnie” to her beloved grandchildren. She enjoyed sports, bridge club and was a member of the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Farmington as well as a graduate of Farmington High School.

“She was an inspiration, watching her get involved in getting us involved. And most remarkably, we never knew Mom to say that she was too busy or too tired. She never created excuses to focus on her own priorities. The selflessness Mom exemplified was just one of the many traits that inspired us to be better versions of ourselves.”

Friends may call at the Hutson Funeral Home in Farmington on Thursday from 6-9 p.m. and Friday from 12-9 p.m. A Biblical Wake Service will be held on Friday at 6:00 p.m. followed by the reciting of the Rosary at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Farmington with Rev. Father Douglas B. Sutton as Celebrant. Entombment will be in the IOOF Cemetery at Farmington. Condolences may be accessed at www.hutsonfuneralhomes.com .
